It is not Anwesha's fault but everything that happens in our lives is not because we deserve it, does it? Arjun is too self involved to think  of anyone else.

XLVIII

One week later

Geet was getting ready to leave for her art classes when her cell rang. It was a call from the nursing home in which Baba was admitted.  The caller informed her that Mr.Khurana had gained consciousness.  Hearing this Geet's happiness knew no bounds. She promptly called up Maan to give him the good news.  Maan was busy in a meeting and did not respond immediately. In the meantime she called up Mr.Sahoo's residence and informed his wife that she would not be coming for the classes that day because she needed to be with her father-in-law who had gained consciousness.  Since Mrs.Sahoo already knew about his condition, she passed on her good wishes.

Geet then called up her mother at the guest house in Kodaikanal and conveyed the good news. Her mother was extremely happy to hear this and called Anwesha to the phone.  Anwesha whose disposition had not undergone any significant change since she landed in Kodaikanal could not contain her happiness. She laughed, she cried and finally shrieked before blowing a loud kiss to her bhabhi.  After she disconnected she begged Rano take her back to Mumbai saying that she was desperate to see her father and beg his forgiveness. Rano understood her daughter-in-law's urgency and called up the travel agent, asking him to book two tickets from Madurai (which was the nearest city) back to Mumbai. The agent informed her that all flights have been cancelled for the next two days as the State was experiencing very heavy rains. Anwesha was upset hearing this, but Rano assured her that they will set journey as soon as the weather gods stop their weeping and smile again.

Before leaving for the nursing home Geet dropped in at Pinky's place and asked her to accompany her to the nursing home.  Pinky thought that Geet was making her usual visits and gladly agreed to accompany her. Geet deliberately kept from her the news that her uncle had gained consciousness. She wanted her to see that for herself. On the way she repeatedly tried to reach Maan but his cell was on silent mode.  Finally they reached the nursing home and Geet literally ran through the corridors to her father-in-law's room.  A nurse was trying to make him sit up.  The minute he saw Geet and Pinky his eyes lit up.  He tried to say something but his tongue was heavy and he could not formulate any words. Just then the doctor walked in and informed them that though he had gained consciousness and seemed to be mentally agile, he was paralysed on the left side. 'Much like my father', thought Pinky. The doctor hoped that he may one day be able to walk, as it is a wonder in itself that he has come this far after being in coma for more than eight months. So anything is possible. He then asked them to take care and went on his rounds.

Geet went up to her father-in-law and asked him to bless her, lifting his limp hand and placing it on her head. Khuranji tried to smile but his mouth would not cooperate. Seeing the sindoor on the foreheads of both the women, he looked at them with questioning eyes. Pinky who is adept at understanding the language of the paralysed, as she was living with one, told him that she has married Adi. He looked happy. Then holding Geet's hand she told him that Geet is now her bhabhi.  Baba looked at her in confusion, wondering how since she was an only child. Pinky smiled and said that Geet is his daughter-in-law - wife of Maan. Baba's eyes nearly popped out and he started having trouble breathing. Geet got alarmed and immediately called in the nurse who strung in the oxygen mask. After a few minutes he quizzically raised his eyebrows as if to ask 'how'.

Geet sat next to him and holding his hands told him that she had always had a crush on Maan ever since she saw him at Arjun's birthday party when she was just seven years old and he was twelve, but she was too shy to reveal it. Baba looked at her incredulously.  Geet laughed and said that she was just joking. Actually they had briefly met again at her failed engagement. Later they had become good friends, fallen in love with each other and got married. To herself she said, 'Well, that is the truth, although not necessarily in that order'. He asked with his eyes, 'When did all this happen'. Geet said aloud, "While you were sleeping", bringing a smile to Baba's lips. After all he had taken her to watch that Hollywood movie starring Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman.

The two young women then spent the next two hours chatting with the old man. Geet told Khuranji that Anwesha was now the bahu of the Shahs. When he enquired about where she was, Geet told him that her mother and she were busy strengthening their 'saas-bahu' bond in Kodaikanal. She did not tell him about the baby or its demise, knowing the deleterious effect it will have on his health.  In between their chatting, Geet kept trying Maan's number and finally managing to reach him, she asked him to come to the nursing home immediately. Maan panicked that something was wrong with his father. Geet reassured him that his father was fine. In fact he was conscious and was enquiring about him. Maan was overjoyed to hear the news and asked to speak to him. Geet then gently broke it to him that he has paralysis and was still unable to speak.  Although Maan was saddened to hear this he was happy that his father can finally see and hear him. He left a message with his secretary to call him if there is any urgent work and left for the day.

Soon Maan landed at the nursing home and rushed to see his Baba. Seeing his son, Khuranji's eyes clouded in tears. Maan emotionally hugged his father and shed happy tears himself.  He then proudly told him that he has fulfilled his dream of becoming a business man some day. Now he was the co-owner of a star hotel.  Khuranji was extremely happy and proud of his son.  Maan then asked the doctor when can his father be discharged.  The doctor told them that he can be discharged that day itself, as living amongst his family members he stood a better chance of full recovery. Maan was wondering how to settle the hospital bills. Geet assured him that Rano has already called up the hospital and informed them that she will take care of everything. Maan was looking distinctly uncomfortable. Geet assured him that they were only taking a temporary loan from her and soon they will repay her in full. He will not remain indebted to anyone. Maan was happy that he had got a wife who appreciated his concerns even without him having to voice them to her and kissed her forehead. All three of them then wheeled Khuranji to the taxi and drove him home.

Maan and Geet adjusted their lives around Baba. They gave him the sole bed in the house and slept on the floor of the hall on the first night after he returned to the chawl. The next day, Maan exchanged his wooden sofa in the hall for a sofa-cum-bed on which they spent their nights.  He also arranged for a physiotherapist and speech therapist to visit their home every morning and evening to help Baba regain the use of his limbs and speech.  Pinky taught Geet the technique to shift Baba from the bed to the wheelchair and back as and when he required it.  Geet requested Mr.Sahoo to allow her to take Ananya's art lessons from her home as she would not be able to leave Baba alone.  Mr.Sahoo readily agreed and had his driver drop and pick up Ananya twice a week for the lessons. As Maan was busy with his work and could not find time to spend with his Baba during week days, he decided to set aside Sundays for him. Geet was only too willing to let him bond with his father.

Rano and Anwesha returned to Mumbai that weekend and headed straight to Maan's house from the airport. Although Baba's face initially brightened up seeing them, he soon focused his attention only on Rano, ignoring his daughter all together. Rano noticed the change in his expression and sitting down next to him, she gently said, "Khuranji, please try to forget the past. Anwesha is your daughter and will always be. Children make mistakes. It is the duty of parents like us to forgive them and guide them on the right path.  Anwesha has not spent a single day without thinking of you, regretting her deed and praying for your well-being. Don't shun her now when she needs you the most."

Khuranji looked at her confused. Geet who was standing behind him mimed to her not to reveal about the baby.  Rano understood and immediately changed the topic, telling him how lucky she was to get a loving daughter-in-law like Anwesha and a loving and respectful son-in-law like Maan.

"Both Maan and Anwesha are like my children", she said. "They have strengthened the bond which always existed between the Khuranas and the Handas."

Khuranji turned to his daughter and nodded his head, beckoning her to him. Anwesha ran into his arms and cried her heart out.

"I'm sorry Baba. I'll never hurt you again. Please forgive me. Please don't hate me."

Baba squeezed his eyes shut, shedding tears. Although he could not physically hug her, she sensed that he embraced her with his heart.  Just then Maan, who had gone shopping, walked in to see the emotional scene between his father and his sister and had tears in his eyes as well.
