Akshay Kumar gets a cool makeover

Director Rohit Dhawan brought in designer Kunal Rawal to style Akshay in Desi Boyz. Kunal, who was styling AK for the first time was excited about presenting the actor in a sexy avatar.

In the last few years, Akki hasn't really cashed in on his looks, and Kunal wanted to change that.

Here's what B-Town folks had to say about Khiladi Kumar's new avatar in the promo of the film..

Deepika Padukone, Actress

I have always found Akshay to be a very sporty and good looking. His fitness is unique and like this athletic and sporty way of keeping fit. He is looking very good in our film Desi Boyz.

Sonam Kapoor, Actress

I love Akshay's new look in Desi Boyz! My friend Kunal Rawal has designed it and I think Akshay looks spectacularly sexy in that look. I give it two thumbs up!

Shirish Kunder, Producer

In an era when practically everyone has 6-packs, courtesy steroids, Akshay is a huge inspiration for all the youngsters as to what could be really achieved with a healthy lifestyle and natural workouts.

Farah Khan, Director

Akshay has always been sexy. He doesn't have to redefine hotness. Like there was Dharamendra today we have Akshay.

Ana Singh, fashion designer

He is very good looking, conventionally handsome and can carry most clothes effortlessly. He looks great in formals casuals and basic stuff.

Vikas Mohan, Trade analyst

After Shah Rukh Khan, it is Akshay Kumar who has the second highest fan following in the overseas market because of his hotness quotient. He looks charming and exceptionally hot in Desi Boyz, where he plays a naughty, flamboyant guy. This film is going to bring him back in a very big way.

Krishika Lulla, Desi Boyz producer

I have been flooded with messages in my phone inbox and receiving compliments from my friends who have seen the first DB promo.

Will Desi Boyz mark an entry for Akshay Kumar in 100 crore club?

By Joginder Tuteja,

Desi Boyz Three years back Shah Rukh Khan was ruling from the top and Akshay Kumar was giving him massive challenge to occupy the Number One slot. However, in the interim period Aamir Khan and Salman Khan came with multiple films that topped the Rs.100 crore mark and formed an exclusive club. Now that Shah Rukh is all set to join the club with Ra.One and Don 2, the industry is quite positive that Akshay too would achieve the same with Desi Boyz.

"First promo of Desi Boyz has seen a very good response ever since it was premiered along with Mausam as well as online", says a trade guru, "The film is looking fresh while the look of Akshay and John has quite appreciated as well. They seem to be sharing a great chemistry together and it is apparent that they have a winner in hand."

While response on YouTube and social networking sites have been largely positive, albeit with some bits of usual negatives trickling in as well, those in the know-how feel that Desi Boyz could well be one of the most aggressively marketed films of Akshay in the recent times.

"His Thank You wasn't promoted as a blockbuster in the making while his delayed films like Patiala House as well as Action Replayy were never expected to cross any major milestones. Yes, Tees Maar Khan was sold as a major festival film last Christmas and resultantly turned out to be Akshay's biggest opener as well. It is a different matter though that audience didn't take a liking to it due to which it couldn't sustain", remarks an observer.

"Desi Boyz should very comfortably break the opening weekend record for Akshay", he continues in the same breath, "One should also understand that market has improved leaps and bounds over last one year. Practically every biggie is netting close to Rs. 50 crores in one week itself. There is no reason why Desi Boyz shouldn't record similar collections. Of course once that happens, it would be film as a whole which will do all the talking. However all around vibe so far is good and with talks of Pritam composing at least a couple of major chartbusters for Akshay and John, seems like half the battle has already been won."

When contacted, director Rohit Dhawan said, "Akshay is one of the best actors in the country. He is capable of every genre whether it is action, romance, drama, comedy. That man can do anything under the roof. He is capable of so much; it is eventually left to the directors and script writers to get the best out of him."

"Joker is innovative; Kick is 'masala'" - Shirish Kunder

By Joginder Tuteja, September 26, 2011 - 11:34 IST

Shirish Kunder Shirish Kunder is going through one of the most exciting times ever in his career. His Joker is making brisk progress with VFX journey to follow while good groundwork has already been done for Kick as well. The only director in the current times to be doing a film each with the likes of Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan, Shirish is happy to have superstars in tow with promise of exciting times ahead in next two years at the least. In an exclusive conversation with Joginder Tuteja, Shirish talks about the varied experience he is enjoying/expecting while making the two films.

Ever since Joker went on floors early this year and especially during last couple of months, there have been quite a few theories going around the film. Really, are you aware about all the rumours making rounds?
Let the speculations continue and mysteries remain; it is fair enough after all (smiles). I am certainly having fun while listening to all sorts of weird things that are floating around. I know that people are clueless around how the film would eventually look because it is a new genre I am exploring here. Since there is no reference point for the film in Bollywood, there isn't anything for me to talk about either. I can tell you though that Joker would be first of its kind for sure.

One thing that I can assure is that visually Joker would be a landmark film
In that case how do you actually explain the setting of your scene to the film's crew? Aren't they too a part of a journey full of surprises?
I will share with you an instance here. Due to demise of our art director Samir Chanda, we had to get a new art director on board. Once he saw the rushes and vision around the film was explained to him, he sounded quite impressed. Now when an outsider's perspective comes in, it is always heartening. Also one thing that I can assure is that visually Joker would be a landmark film. The kind of grandeur which has been brought in along with 3D technology will certainly set a new benchmark. Guess audience would get a taste of it only when the first theatrical hits the screens.

Shirish Kunder I guess that could well be start of an exciting phase for you. After all, immediately after Joker you have Kick with Salman Khan to take care of.
Yes, definitely. Also, Kick would be pretty much set in a 'masala' film zone. We are adding quite a few other ingredients when compared to the Telugu original. For starters, action would be mounted on a much bigger scale. It would have a Hollywood style to it and even though essence of the character that Salman plays would still be the same as original, the screenplay would be far more enhanced.

Guess that can be expected, after all you have Salman in tow again after Jaan-E-Mann.
(Smiles) Yes, of course. Also, it is a big confidence booster and puts me in a good space. Today when everyone is chasing Salman, I already have one film with him in hand. To have your next two films with Akshay and Salman each could be a dream for any director. And imagine, I have already worked with both of them together.

Moreover you are also co-producing Joker. I believe not many directors are doing that.
Well, since you know the facts there isn't much for me to add here. However, it surprises me when some real rookies boast about their standing in the industry despite working on films that are made at a budget of Rs. 5-10 crores with next level stars and hardly do much either critically or commercially. Anyways, leave that because I don't quite wish to veer this conversation in that direction.

Shirish Kunder Why not? Don't you wish to be in the limelight?
No, I would rather focus on my work. See, I don't party or socialise, I concentrate on my work and it is due to this reason that other than Joker and Kick, I am also quite close to announcing three more films next year. It's a matter of getting the timing right before I begin these films. In fact even as I talk to you and then continue work on my current schedule of Joker, there is a substantial portion of Kick that I have already frozen on paper.

With so much happening, how is Farah (Khan) contributing to your two films?
By doing nothing (laughs). No, jokes apart, she is there as a choreographer for these films. However, other than that we do not get involved in each other's films except for the job being given to us. See, we don't understand each other's films. She thinks commercial while I am more on an innovative side.

Farah thinks commercial while I am more on an innovative side
So how innovative can one expect Joker to be?
A lot, especially after VFX is integrated into the scenes. When Akshay or a Sonakshi stare at me with a surprised expression after being made to act against a green backdrop, I really enjoy that moment. Something similar happens in movies made by George Lucas as well because no one knows in the beginning what is being shot. I don't think that would be the case in Kick though because my actors would know exactly what are they shooting. It would be far more straight forward.

Akshay turns nostalgic in home town

It was 'homecoming' of sorts for Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar as he arrived in the holy city of Amritsar to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple on Sunday.

The actor turned nostalgic as he talked about the home that their family had and where he was born near Jallianwala Bagh. In the city to promote his new film Speedy Singh, the actor talked about how his father, who later shifted to Chandni Chowk area in New Delhi with the family, used to tell him stories about the city and the Golden Temple."

"My father was a wrestler and we had our home near the Jallianwala Bagh. I do recall my childhood days though I was very young when we shifted to Delhi, where we stayed for l''g'', the actor said. Akshay recalled that he later went to Bangkok in Thailand where he learnt martial arts and used to work in a restaurant.

Born Rajiv Bhatia, he changed his name to Akshay Kumar when he made his debut in the film industry in 1989. The actor said he is always overwhelmed by the response that his films get in Punjab and confessed that he loved playing the role of a Sikh in the movie". "I would love to work in a Punjabi film and want to contribute to the Punjabi film industry, which is on revival pa"h," he added.

Akshay who was accompanied by character actor Anupam Kher and comedian Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi was talking to the media about the new film. Speedy Singh, he said, is a light-hearted movie and would be liked by the youngsters. The film has been mostly shot in Punjab and Canada and the actor said they were expecting a good response from the northern India and foreign shores.

Ajay-Akki gear up for some action
The actors have joined hands for Rohit Shetty's forthcoming venture that will go on floors late next year.
Nothing is permanent in Bollywood. Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, who were never the best of friends since their first film Suhaag in 1994, have now decided to give their strained relationship another chance.

The two biggest action heroes of present day Bollywood have decided to come together for Rohit Shetty's next action flick that will go on floors late next year.

The news of the patch-up has shocked the entire industry because from the very get-go, when Akshay and Ajay worked together in Sandesh Kohli's 1994 film, they were never able to see eye-to-eye.

Tensions between Akshay and Ajay escalated to a new high when Ajay announced that his next project would tentatively be titled Son Of Sardar, which incidentally was already registered under Akshay's banner Hari Om Entertainment (Mumbai Mirror, July 23, 2011). However, the same subject of dispute ended up being the platform on which Akshay and Ajay made peace.

A source informed us that the two, who last worked together in the 2005 film Insaan, bonded when Ajay went to meet Akki on the sets of Rowdy Rathore to request Khiladi Kumar to part with the film title, Son Of Sardar.

"Akshay explained to Ajay that he could not part with the title as he had already finished scripting the film and it would be going on floors very soon. That is when Akshay proposed that they should do a film together.

Ajay loved the idea and they immediately got down to planning the project. They decided to co-produce the film under both their banners. Ajay also spoke to his close friend Rohit Shetty to direct the venture," explained the source.
