Scene 16

Viren was still numb with shock and felt like he'd been hit by a train. Nivi had only been gone a day but it felt to him like it was a lifetime ago that he'd watched her enter the Sharma's house from the roof. HER house, he corrected himself mentally, it was her house now because according to the papers in his hands, she was a Sharma again. His heart refused to believe it but it was right there in black and white in front of his face. He hadn't been able to stop looking at those papers since she'd handed them to him and said the words that had frozen any response he might have made in his throat. Her words had made him bow his head in shame unable to even look her in the eye. Every word she'd said was true – he had broken her trust, all the faith she'd placed in him by joining the family and leaving behind her own, he had crushed it all. He had used her innocence and hurt her to meet his own ends....he'd wanted to apologise but there were no words strong enough to express how sorry he was and nothing he could say would change what he'd done, how could it possibly? Even as his head was spinning with these thoughts, she had confirmed all his worst fears by saying everything she had done these past few weeks had been for the family's sake and not his. He'd felt his heart stop as she said that this, these divorce papers, were the truth of their marriage.

He tried to remember what he was doing, standing half in and out of his wardrobe but for the life of him he had no clue. All he could think was what was he going to do now? He wanted to see Nivi so badly, he needed to see her, even just one glimpse but how could that be possible now? He didn't even know if he'd be able to speak if he saw her...he didn't know what was wrong with him, never before had he had any problems with saying what was on his mind but now he was second guessing his every thought! He told himself that it didn't matter what he wanted, Nivi's happiness was what mattered now. He remembered her words again and thought painfully that Nivi would be probably be happier without him, after all, what had he given her except more pain? How could he have done that to such an innocent soul when he had known what she'd already had to face in her life? He hated himself and didn't think he deserved to even see her let alone speak to her! Nothing he told himself made the pain of her not being there any less. It felt as though a part of him had gone & there was just emptiness inside him.

Viren thought back to what Siddarth had told him; Nivi had done this for his happiness, because she thought it was what he wanted. He could believe that, Nivi only ever thought of others, always had done, never herself. The thought that she'd considered his feelings, the person who had given her so much pain, made him feel even worse somehow. He suddenly remembered telling her all those months ago, that if she didn't speak up for herself then who would? She finally had spoken her mind to him before she gave him these papers, it had been unbearably painful to hear but he was happy at least that she had found her voice and he would try to respect her decision and leave her in peace. He didn't know how long he would be able to manage it but he would try for her sake.

Pulling himself out of his thoughts with difficulty, he finally decided that he must have opened the wardrobe to put the papers inside but before he did, his eyes fell on his birthday present from Nivi still there in the back. The wardrobe was half empty now without Nivi's clothes and he wondered absently had it been like that before she'd come here as his wife. He couldn't actually remember a time before Nivi clearly, everything seemed fuzzy, like his life had been in black and white before her but since she'd come into his life, all his memories were filled with life and colour. He pulled out the big frame and took it over to the bed. He set it down and looked at the pictures imagining Nivi's face as she put the images together, had she smiled at the pictures or been sad? He thought she would have smiled and had tears in her eyes... had she known even then that she was going to leave? Was she happy now? He wished he could ask her these things as he sat there stroking her smiling face through the glass, feeling lost without her. He remembered the time they'd spent together and wondered how he had let it all fall apart.

Scene 17

Nivi and Dadi were sitting at the table peeling and chopping vegetables for the evening meal. They were both quiet as they worked and Dadi kept looking over at Nivi who seemed lost in her thoughts as she peeled. Nivi tried to concentrate on what she was doing and put all other thoughts out of her mind but she couldn't help herself from thinking about Viren. What was he doing? Was he relieved now that she'd finally set him free? She knew he had been shocked and upset when she'd announced her decision. It had been the hardest thing she'd ever had to do and she felt her heart twist again as she relived those moments. She had seen the tears in Viren's eyes and felt how stunned he was as she put the divorce papers in his hand but she'd had to harden her heart to tell him exactly how she felt. She thought that once the shock wore off and he thought about things calmly, he would be relieved because after all, wasn't this what he'd wanted? She knew that seeing her made him feel guilty so at least now he could live without that guilt in front of his eyes every day. A small part of her mind said that she was being unfair to Viren, he wouldn't be relieved and he was probably feeling the same way that she was but she pushed that thought away; she'd made her decision and there was no going back now. The thought made her eyes fill with tears and she blinked them away before Dadi could see.

Dadi started talking to her about the friend that they'd gone to visit recently and Nivi tried to focus on her words instead of the hole in her heart. Dadi was saying something about her friends grandkids coming to visit and that she might invite them over in a few weeks. As Nivi nodded absently and picked out another potato to peel, she heard a faint but very familiar sound; the sweet sound of a flute being played somewhere in the distance. She ignored the longing in her heart and shook her head slightly not wanting Dadi to wonder what was wrong with her and slowly the music faded away as she had known it would. She'd been hearing it on and off ever since she'd come back home, it popped up whatever she happened to be doing; the first few times her heart had leapt into her mouth at the image of Viren somewhere playing his flute as he thought of her... but then she'd realised it was in her head. She didn't know whether she was going mad but no matter what she did, she couldn't seem to stop it from happening...

In the Sood house, Viren was still in his room looking at Nivi's collage which he'd propped up against the wall; he couldn't bear to put it in the back of the wardrobe again so he thought he would make space for it on the wall somewhere and hang it up. As he was still thinking, he heard Vandana's voice at the door. 'Viren, kaana lag gaya hai, neeche aaja beta.' She saw the frame he still had his hand on and looked at him with so much sympathy and understanding it hurt him to look. Viren couldn't bear to see the look on her face as it seemed to make the hole where Nivi used to be seem even bigger and he thought he would start to cry so he turned away and said quietly 'nahi tayiji, mujhe bhook nahi hai' How could he eat anything? And how could he sit there with everyone, knowing that Nivi wasn't there, making small talk while he forced down food he couldn't taste? Vandana came and put her hand on his shoulder and said 'aisa nahi karte beta, tujhe himmat rakna chahiya, sab teek ho jayega tu dhekna.' He didn't have the heart to argue and say that without Nivi, nothing would be alright ever again and instead said 'aap jaaye tayiji, agar mujhe bhook lage toh mein baad mein kaloonga' knowing he wouldn't.

Nivi was still trying to get the sound out the flute of her mind when she felt the peeler in her hand slip and dig into her thumb causing a small but deep cut which started bleeding instantly. She felt a dull pain but there was an even sharper pain in her chest as she remembered cutting the same finger a couple of months ago; at the time a worried Viren had grabbed her hand, run it under the tap and then put a plaster on it lovingly before kissing it saying 'yeh lo, tumhare pati ne sab teek kardiya, ab mujhe kya milega?' with a wink. She heard Dadi say something and came back to the present, Viren's voice still ringing in her ears, painfully aware that he wasn't here with her now and heard Dadi say 'Nivi kya kar rahi hai, khoon beh raha hai beta, jaldi ja kar plaster laga le!' Nivi got up and went wordlessly, still lost in the past and Dadi watched her go sadly wishing she could do something to help her daughter who was in so much pain that even a deep cut had barely registered through it.

After Vandana left, Viren still feeling lost, wandered aimlessly out into the hall and saw Nandu changing a lightbulb in the hallway. It looked like it wasn't working and Viren needed a distraction so he went over and said he'd have a look at it. Even Nandu was looking at him with sympathy and Viren felt the pain again and thought this wasn't distracting him at all really. He took the bulb anyway and tried to fit it in but it looked like it was a little too big for the socket. As he twisted the bulb he remembered Nivi trying and failing to change a lightbulb for a lamp in their room. She hadn't fit it in properly and when she switched the lamp on the bulb had let out sparks and popped causing her to jump and scream and causing Viren to laugh at her cuteness. He remembered the annoyed look she'd given him after he'd laughed at her and was thinking sadly about when and if he would see that look again when the bulb in his hand cracked and splintered into his palm.

I must have been holding it too tightly, Viren thought looking at the broken lightbulb in his hand almost curiously. He set the pieces down, still thinking about Nivi and feeling like the pain of not seeing her would overwhelm him when he heard Nandu exclaim 'Viren bhaiyya, aap ka haath!' Viren was jolted out of his thoughts and he looked down at his hand again and saw a piece of the glass had cut his thumb deeply and it was bleeding quite a bit. It was a dull sort of pain which was nothing compared to how he was feeling inside. He told Nandu to get another bulb and went to find a plaster, trying and failing not to think of how if Nivi was still here, she'd have been so worried at even that little cut...

Edit: Guys, i've just realised my flute scene right at the end here is similar to Sana's on her threadEmbarrassed Apologies Sana, i've only started reading your scene! Hope you still find mine to be a good read Hug

Scene 18

Viren woke up from a restless sleep with a start and instantly knew Nivi wasn't there. The night before he'd fallen asleep after dawn and when he'd woken up his sleep deprived brain had somehow made him forget for a few sweet moments. Now he had no such joy and the loss of Nivi hit him hard again and he sat up on the sofa. He hadn't been able to face going back to the bed; in his heart Nivi was still his wife, she would always be his wife and the bed was hers. He couldn't sleep there without her and he wouldn't. Viren looked out of the open window and realised it wasn't quite dawn yet although the sky was starting to lighten. He ran his fingers through his hair and knew he couldn't go back to sleep again. His mind was once again filled with thoughts of Nivi, it seemed like his every waking thought was of her and the one thought that kept going round and round his head with everything else was 'what should i do?!' He didn't know, he knew he couldn't live without her, he needed her like he needed air, it was killing him trying to get through every single moment without her and instead of getting easier it was getting harder. He remembered thinking that he should leave her in peace and knew he wouldn't be able to do it, the pull for her was too strong. He stood up and began pacing around his room as if that would help him run away from his thoughts. He knew he couldn't carry on like this; he needed to somehow clear his mind and think calmly before he decided what to do. He went to the table and opened his flute case. He put the flute pieces together and headed out of the room, hoping with all his heart that he would know what to do after he'd played a few notes.

Nivi tossed and turned in her sleep; she was dreaming about Viren again, or was she awake she didn't know because it all seemed so real.. She was falling off the edge of a cliff...she just managed to hold on with her fingertips and suddenly Viren was helping her and she was on the bridge where she'd first met him. He looked deeply into her eyes as he held her close and she instinctively knew she could trust him...then all of a sudden it was navratri and she felt someone pull her scarf off her head. She turned to see Viren staring at her while putting her burning scarf out on the floor, a second later he was looking at her in pure disbelief and shock and something else, mirroring her feelings as they both heard each others names for the first time. Nivi rolled over in her sleep and the scene in her head changed...she was standing in the main hall of the Sood house, holding out her hand to Viren saying she didn't want to lose a good friend while he looked at her uncertainly, with innocent eyes...the image blurred again and she was standing next to him and he was telling his family that whatever happened she would remain his wife forever. It changed again and it was night, they were outside and Viren was telling her that he hated her and he had only pretended to love her...even in sleep she felt the pain his words caused and began to wake up. Before she did, she saw Viren lying in bed shivering with fever, holding on to her hand so tightly. She sat up with a start while Viren's voice still whispered 'mujhe akela mat chod na Nivedita..' in her head. She looked around and shook her head to clear it, wondering when this would stop and fearing it never would.

As Viren stepped out onto the roof, he saw that the sky was getting lighter, the sun would be fully up soon he thought as he automatically walked to the edge and looked at the Sharma house below. He'd spent a lot of his time up here in the past two days, hoping to catch a glimpse of Nivi but the only time he had seen her was when she had been going in to the house. Even now there was nothing but he hadn't been expecting there to be anything, no-one was up yet and the doors were shut. He turned away with a heavy heart and moved to the far side of the terrace where he had stood with Nivi and broke his fast. Before he could start thinking about that he put the flute to his lips quickly and closing his eyes began to play. The first few notes were piercing and frantic reflecting his state of mind but as he slowly began to relax, he weaved a sweeter melody, filled with regret and longing. For the first time in a while he felt as though he was able to express himself, even if it wasn't with words.

Nivi had given up on trying to sleep since it was almost dawn anyway, she tried to busy herself with getting things ready for breakfast unwillingly thinking that Vandana would be waking soon in the other house to get breakfast ready for everyone there. She started to wonder who took Viren his tea now and stopped herself midway, not wanting to go down that road. As she reached for the plates, she heard the sound of a flute being played and she closed her eyes thinking when was this going to stop. She shook her head but it didn't stop this time...she covered her ears for a minute but even when she took her hands away she could still hear it faintly. She wondered if this was it, she was going to have a flute playing in her head forever when she realised that the tune had changed slightly. She moved towards the front door and realised she wasn't imagining it because it was slightly louder here. Her heartbeat sped up as she realised Viren was really out there somewhere, awake before dawn, playing his flute! She forced herself to stand in one place when all she wanted to do was run out and find him. She placed a hand on the door and closed her eyes, listening to Viren and his pain. She felt her heart twist and the melody felt like it was inside her, like as if he was playing what she was feeling right now. Unable to stop herself, she slowly turned the door handle and peeked out, needing to see him but hoping he didn't see her.

He wasn't where Nivi had expected him to be, on the terrace facing her house, all she could see there in the growing light were a few sheets blilowing in the light breeze. She was confused as her eyes searched for him, opening the doors wider now that she knew he couldn't see her. After a few seconds she realised he must be on the other side of the roof which she couldn't from here. She felt a little disappointed but she could hear Viren more clearly now and she felt an invisible pull as she took a few steps outside. She had never heard Viren play like this before, with so much longing, each note moving her in a different way. She realised she was crying when he started to play a slow and painful version of the melody she always heard in her head.

Viren poured all his emotions into his music and let it sweep him away. He felt the peace he always got when he played the flute and thought of the moments he had shared with Nivi, realising that it didn't hurt so much to think of her while he was playing. Thinking about Nivi, he unconsciously began to play out their melody but it wasn't the same hopeful tune as it once was, it was much slower and filled with the loss he felt each time he took a breath without her...

As he brought the song to a close, he opened his eyes and breathed deeply, looking out at the blue sky and the sun which had come up while he had been playing. He felt calmer than he ever been since Nivi had left and he turned towards the Sharma house thinking that he needed to make a decision on what he was going to do; he couldn't carry on like this, in a constant state of confusion and self doubt. In his calmer state, he realised he had two options: he could simply leave Nivi alone to find her own happiness and make a new life, staying out of her way and not causing her any more problems or he could follow her and show her that he was worth loving and that he could be her happiness if she gave him a chance to make up for his wrongs. He was thinking these options through as he took a step forward when he realised in shock that the doors to the Sharma house were open!

Viren took another small step and hid behind a sheet that had been hung up for drying, peeking out to see if he could see anyone. With growing amazement, he saw Nivi was standing there in a pale pink saree with her eyes closed; she looked like something he might have dreamt up but when she wiped away tears he knew she was real. She had a plaster on her thumb the same as he had and he felt a little twist in his heart thinking about how he used to be the one to help her when she hurt herself...who would do that now?

He watched and his heart skipped a beat as Nivi looked around quickly, as if she didn't know what she was doing there and then looked towards where he was hidden for a long moment. He thought she looked a bit guilty but he was too far from her to be sure and as she turned and went inside he realised he had a big smile on his face; she had heard him and had come to listen! He felt his heart grow lighter and the hopelessness he had been feeling lifted slightly. He took one last look at where Nivi had disappeared to and then went inside thinking again about his options... but really there was only ever one for him, he thought still smiling and remembering Nivi's face as he went to put away his flute. He took out a clean top and jeans to wear after his shower and his eyes fell on the collage still propped up against the wall. He realised it didn't hurt so much to look at her face now that he'd reached his decision and he took a few steps forward and touched her smiling face through the glass before leaving the room, his head buzzing with ideas and feeling a little more like his old self again.
