Ronaldooo ''phorever'' 😳🤣
Lionel Messi's exquisite opening goal in Barcelona's 3-1 victory was the latest in a long line of reminders that this is a player operating on an entirely different stratum to his peers.
Manager Pep Guardiola saluted his talisman, saying: "To talk about if it's one of Messi's best goals, there's no point - he scores such great goals they become normal."
It began with an error, as an unfit Cesc Fabregas lazily backheeled the ball only vaguely in the direction of Jack WIlshere. Andrs Iniesta was on it in a flash and displayed wonderfully deft footwork to beat the two Arsenal players that had attempted to combine.
Buying a moment of thinking time by moving the ball away from Laurent Koscielny, Iniesta weighed up a typically impeccable pass which put Messi through against Almunia.
What happened next looked like a fluke, one of those odd flights the ball
takes after an unusual deflection. In fact, Messi had impudently (and
deliberately) scooped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper, cradling it
for a split second between his toe and the bottom of his shin to tee up an
emphatic volley into the empty net.
David Villa and Pedro Rodriguez with their pace and movement along with the incisive passing of Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta meant the Arsenal defence were constantly on the back foot but it was Messi who unlocked the door to the defence.
He sent the Catalan side on their way with a delicate flick over the keeper and then volleyed home from close range.
Arsenal spent most of the match encamped in their own goal mouth but having drawn level through a Sergio Busquets' own goal they where left seething by the dismissal of Robin van Persie for his second yellow card, the main talking point of the night.
Whether Arsenal could have held on to the 1-1 draw with eleven men, which would have seen them go through after a 2-1 win from the first leg, is debatable but Xavi and Messi sentenced the game, while there could have been plenty more goals for Bara.
Even by Messi's own standards this season is becoming something special as he has now scored 45 goals in 39 games. He has eight from eight matches in the Champions League while domestically he has notched up 27 from 23 games.
The two goals against Arsenal mean that Messi is now top goal scorer in the history of Barcelona in European competitions aged just 23.
He has 33 goals, beating the previous record by Rivaldo of 31, and Luis Enrique, a talisman for the side in the late 1990s only had 27.
Meanwhile Messi has remained remarkably modest about his achievements and has been helped to keep his feet on the ground since his arrival at 13 by the ethos of the club to nurture the youth players into the first team.
Guardiola is the first to praise him but also emphasises the work of the players around him.
"Messi had another great game but the whole team did really well and we created a lot of goal scoring chances," said Guardiola, in the press conference after the Arsenal match.
"All the headlines will be about the goals from Messi and Xavi but in midfield we were very strong with (Javier) Mascherano and (Sergio) Busquets. We tried to improve from the first leg and we managed to press Arsenal back during the whole game.
"The only way to improve is to look in the mirror and see what you did wrong and look to correct it. That's what we did."
Messi's team-mates were quick to praise him however.
"Once again Leo has made the difference as he always does," said Xavi. "We see it every week but it is still extraordinary what he is capable of."

MADRID, March 19 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona star Leo Messi said on Friday that he would never sign for his club's bitterest rivals Real Madrid.
Messi has scored 27 goals this season and the Argentinean is the undoubted hero of the Barca fans in the Camp Nou Stadium. There have been rumors that one day Real Madrid would like to sign him over the years in the Spanish press, but Messi says there is no way that he would ever follow the route trod by Luis Figo when he abandoned Barcelona for Madrid 11 years ago.
"My objective is to always be with Barcelona. I would love to finish my career with Barcelona and then maybe fulfil my dream of playing at home in Argentina, but I want my European career to take place solely in one club," said Messi in an interview with Sky Sports.
"I would never go to Real Madrid," he added.
Messi also discussed the award of last year's Balon D' Or award, which he won ahead of Barcelona team mates, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez, who had both helped Spain win the 2010 World Cup.
"I didn't expect to win it. Everyone say Xavi and Andres as the favorites and I think that they deserved it after the fantastic season they had and winning the World Cup," commented Messi.
Finally he was asked about Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has also scored 27 league goals this season.
"I have a normal relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo. Whenever we
meet each other we say hello and there is professional respect, but no
more than that. I don't have any special relationship with him as I do
with my companions," concluded Messi.
