Tanu Weds Manu fares well despite World Cup fever
Press Trust Of India
March 01, 2011

Despite two big World Cup matches over the weekend, R Madhavan-Kangana Ranaut starrer Tanu Weds Manu has opened reasonably well at the box office netting Rs 11 crore in three days.

According to the film's producer Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, in spite of two big World Cup matches including the India-England clash, TWM has managed over 11 crores net in three days and the fact that the word of mouth of the film is so high, it is doing even better.

Made on a budget of Rs 16 crores including the print and publicity, the film has already recovered its cost by selling its satellite rights at a whopping Rs 9 crore.

Also the fact that Tanu Weds Manu is the only big film in March, because no big film is releasing within a month due to the cricket fever, makes its run even better and longer at the box office, sources said.

When contacted director Anand Rai told PTI that he had overcome the scare of releasing the film during the World Cup seeing the response to promotions and publicity before the release.

"I was just honest about my film, my actors and my crew. I delivered and felt good about it. Being a cricket lover, I realise that audiences just want a smile on their face and value for their money. Entertainment is the mode and it is whether you see India win a match or watching a good film," he added.

Meanwhile, according to boxofficeindia.com, the trade web portal followed by the film industry, TWM took a fair start at around 40 per cent on an all India basis considering the cast.

The North was better at 60 per cent in multiplexes.

The film is being appreciated by the public especially in the North and should prove to be a success. The areas outside North will pick up well over the weekend. The music has turned out a huge advantage for the film and the clear run for the next few weeks is another plus.

Saat Khoon Maaf which released at the start of the World Cup, had a poor first week of around Rs 15 crore net. The film fell badly from Monday and the eighth day saw another huge fall of around 80-85 per cent.

Patiala House fell in the second week  with around Rs 6.25 crore net business. The daily collections were steady but are just too low. The two week total is Rs 30.50 crore net, the website said.

TANU WEDS MANU all set to cross JWM and BBB

March 3, 2011 05:13:36 PM IST
Joginder Tuteja, Glamsham Editorial

Though it would be unfair to pin point the overall quality and audience acceptance of cult romcom like JAB WE MET or one of the most loved films of last year, BAND BAAJA BAARAAT, with currently-making-waves TANU WEDS MANU, the box office collections prove that in this genre, the Madhavan and Kangna starrer is all set to be victorious by a very good margin.

With more than 11 crores coming in the first weekend, the collections here are much more than what BAND BAAJA BAARAAT (2010) and JAB WE MET (2007), two films belonging to similar genre, had netted. In fact while entire first week's collections of BAND BAAJA BAARAAT were just over 8 crores, JAB WE MET had netted 12 crores in it's first week.

On the other hand while it was always a given that TANU WEDS MANU would comfortably break the first week total of the aforementioned films, it is now crystal clear that this would be done by a huge margin, what with this Aanand L Rai directed film looking at crossing the 17 crore mark very comfortably.

Now it has to be seen if the eventual collections of TANU WEDS MANU would be higher than BAND BAAJA BAARAAT (23 crores) and JAB WE MET (30 crores) as well. With no major release for competition till 1st April, TANU WEDS MANU would be enjoying the best of the whole world for full five weeks. This means that while 'Band Baaja Baaraat' would be comfortably crossed by 'Tanu Weds Manu' in two weeks flat, there is real threat for 'Jab We Met' total to be left behind as well.

CHECK OUT: Kangna high on TANU WEDS MANU success

While the collections are definitely pleasing for this medium budget film, let's analyse the factors that led to such a response.

- Highest marks here go to the team which put together the promos of the film. Right from word 'go' the promos were bang on target, whether talkie or the ones centred on songs and dances.

- Secondly the look of the film which told exactly what it was all about.

- Thirdly the unique pairing of Madhavan and Kangna which was exuding the right vibes and

- Fourthly (and very importantly) the chartbuster track 'Saddi Galli'. Once all these factors came together to create the right visibility for the film, there was no looking back for 'Tanu Weds Manu'.
