Howdie Guys...
How's everyone doing....πŸ˜ƒ

So this week's DOTW is on... REMAKES....

shocker... well not exactly... recently alot of regional movies are being remade in other languages... the list just keeps growing.....πŸ˜•

And every time a movie is being remade... the very first question that pops up in our minds is... Is it going to be better??πŸ€”

So this week, i thought maybe we can share what are our thoughts on remakes... and here's some questions that can get you started.....

1. Which movies have you watched recently which are remakes & did you like them?

2. Does remaking movies mean there's a lack of creativity in the industry?

3. Is it fair to put high expectations on a movie based on the success of the original?

4. What should a remake be : scene-to-scene copy of the original or simply an adaptation?

5. To Remake or To Not Remake?

So yup guys, Lets talk... What do you think about remaking movies....

Here's a list of some movies that are remade.... (same story, with different cast)
i'm so sry, but i usually watch tamil, telugu and hindi films... so i'm not very sure about other remakes in malayalam/kannada... but if you do know of some, please do share...

1. Ghajini (duh)
2. Vikramarkudu - Siruthai
3. Pokiri (telg) - Pokiri (Tamil) - Wanted
4. Pammal K Samantham - Kambhakht Ishq
5. Okkadu - Ghilli
6. Almost every Jayam Ravi movie
7. Kaakha Kaakha - Gharshana
8. Bodyguard - Kavalan
9. Manichithrathazhu - Chandramukhi - apthamitra - Bhool Bhulaiya
10. Dhool - Veede

And the list goes on....

plus... there's some upcoming movies as well...

1. 3 Idiots remake
2. Vedam
3. Fashion
4. Bodygaurd in Hindi
5. Singam

Amongst others....

Plus, i found this poster, that i thought was rather interesting...

so, what do you guys think?

p.s i'm not against remakes. I've seen some remakes which are just amazing and some which, well just dont do justice to the original...

hey, i'm tamil but i do watch the occasional telugu and hindi movies too!

"uthamaputhiran" (tamil) - remake of "ready"(telugu)
though it was basically the same, there were some changes to the movie. luved the original mainly coz of raam- watched it with subs a few times.
but i also luved the remake coz i rely like dhanush - huge fan of him. though i knew the story already, i liked it as equally as i liked the original. its a shame that the tamil version didn't do too well!

ghajini(hindi) - remake of ghajini(tamil)
what can i say? luved both versions! and as u know both were huge hits! surya and aamir are rely good actors! am a huge fan of surya!

haha! liked the thing abt almost every jayam ravi movie! well the movies of his i've watched in tamil and telugu are santhosh subramanium and something something! and to be honest i preffered the original of both those films! don't know why... but just did!

remaking movies is not entirely a lack of creativity because some directors do try to change it  even if it is a tiny bit to suit the audience and the actor!

however, i think remakes shouldn't be a scene to scene copy but an adaptation! this way, you can bring out the director and actors' true potential. i don't think they should stop remakes completely because it is always nice when you see a rely good movie in another anguage being remade into ur own language with ur fave actors!

also abt putting high expectations- hmm, i don't think it is fair t put hih expectations because u end up getting dissapointed at the end result even if it was good because normally the original can never be replaced in ur heart! just my opinion...

upcoming remakes:
3 idiots(hindi) - Nanban (tamil)
personally, i do not rely agree with the star cast (i think surya would be better than vijay as aamir's role- my personal opinion) but then again my opinion would pob change after watching the movie

singam in hindi
i personally feel that singam is too much of a mass and south indian film to be made into hindi! but lets see!

kaaka kaaka also is being made into hindi with genelia as jothika's role- i personally feel genelia is too hyper to enact a teacher's role

recently i've heard that simbu is acting in tamil version of hindi movie "dabangg" and that too salman's role - must be interesting!

so many remakes nowadays, but only some work!

Okkay so some of the remakes i liked and didnt like im giving them stars.. if its 5 mean excellent if its 1 means POOR...πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

Ready**** - Uthamaputhiran****
Bommarillu***** - SS**
Pokhiri*** - Pokkiri (tamil)**** - Wanted***
Kick***** - Thillalangadi**
Okkadu*** - Ghilli****
Ghajini**** - Ghajni***
NVNV**** - Something something**
Vikramarkudu*** - Siruthai**

Okay so these are the very basic examples.. i usually think that remakes are always a safre bet.. they have already proved themselves.. u always remake a movie which is a hit so u get 50% assurance that ur remake would atleast be half as liked.. i dont mind remakes but then i think that remakes should be remakes.. they shouldnt be changed.. Pokhiri's idea and story line was amazingg Mahesh babu was good.. but somehow they ruffian rowdy didnt suit his image same went with Okkadu while the same roles when Vijay did were amazingg it suited his image.. i like Mahesh alot but somehow he didnt impress me in those movies tho they were entertaining..the Tamil ghajini is a classic.. Amir was good but not as good as Suriya.. now coming to Jeyam Ravi i seriously think that guy cannot act.. Thillalangadi was a waste... kick was such a hillarious movie while in Thillalandagi i was waiting to laugh and i just kept waiting till the end.. Ravi Teja's comic timing is very hard to match so an actor like Jeyam is ummmmπŸ˜•..okaay then coming onto Siddharth;s telugu movies which were liked by all and everyone were just wasted in Tamil.. they may have done good business or watever but seriously they failed very badly to interest me simply becuz Ravi's acting was plain.. he has this very same expresiion on his face all the time..πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

Ready's remake Uthamaputhiran was almost equally entertaining.. Dhanush actually looked good in that movie.. movie was almost the same.. i liked it.. then there was this other movie Adavari matalauke ardhale verule which was remade as Yaradi nee mohini and i like Yaradi nee mohini better becuz Dhanish suited the role.. and that was the first time i actually thought Nayan could act..

Remakes are good becuz i think usually the hindi ones remake the tamil/telugu becuz the hindi audience is totally unaware of the story.. im not even indian but if me count in it i would be counted as a Northie.. soo me exposed to SI movies is like very different but i still love these movies.. the storylines are great.. some great SI movies made classic hindi movies like Tere naam, Hum aapke hain koun, Ghajini etc etc..

so remakes are always a good deal for me.. a ready remake and a kick remake and a bodyguard remake is already on in Hindi with Salman Khan..i hope they turn out to be good..Kaaka Kaaka was a heart wrenching movie.. i dont really think John can live upto wat Suriya did.. tho i think Genie would be able to pull off a Jo becuz she is a good actress.. but Johnn ummm cannot say much..πŸ˜•

Hi, nice to me you. Likewise here - tamil but like to watch movies of diff langs

I loved the original cos of ram too, didnt quite like dhanush cos i thought did a better job. I'm not a dhanush fan too, so i didnt like the tamil version thou

ghajini(hindi) - remake of ghajini(tamil)
what can i say? luved both versions! and as u know both were huge hits! surya and aamir are rely good actors! am a huge fan of surya!

I liked the chemistry between surya-asin... throughtout the movie , the chemistry hooks on to you and you can feel the love, so it kinda actually makes you really sad when asin passes away and surya loses the memory.... in the hindi, i just felt amir looked too old for the role and there wasnt any proper chemistry that lets you connect with the audience.. so i guess i didnt really feel upset or anything for aamir in that role

but i did like how they changed the storyline.. completely didnt like nayan's role in the original, it was draggin the story.. n the twin villains, thou interesting.. it kinda dragged the story too... in hindi, they shortened the 2nd heroine's role and the story was more precise... which was better....

but overall, i guess what matter is which movie connects... n i'd pick the surya starrer.. just cos of surya and of cos the surya-asin chem

haha! liked the thing abt almost every jayam ravi movie! well the movies of his i've watched in tamil and telugu are santhosh subramanium and something something! and to be honest i preffered the original of both those films! don't know why... but just did!

Dont get me started with jayam ravi... not a fan of his... n i dont think he has the acting calibre... the originals are always better... some of his other remakes are mazhai, thillangadi... all of which i thought the original was better... simply put, i dont like how jayam ravi trys to just plainly imitate the original actor... it's like he has no style or personality of his own.. which def makes the original better....

remaking movies is not entirely a lack of creativity because some directors do try to change it  even if it is a tiny bit to suit the audience and the actor!

however, i think remakes shouldn't be a scene to scene copy but an adaptation! this way, you can bring out the director and actors' true potential. i don't think they should stop remakes completely because it is always nice when you see a rely good movie in another anguage being remade into ur own language with ur fave actors!

I prefer an adaption too... firstly cos, a scene to scene copy can make it boring cos you already know whats happening, if you watched the origina... and also, sometimes it doesnt connect... plus a adaption does give it more room for the directors and actors to explore the scene... and no movie is perfect, you can always try to change minute things to make it better...

also abt putting high expectations- hmm, i don't think it is fair t put hih expectations because u end up getting dissapointed at the end result even if it was good because normally the original can never be replaced in ur heart! just my opinion...

true....

upcoming remakes:
3 idiots(hindi) - Nanban (tamil)
personally, i do not rely agree with the star cast (i think surya would be better than vijay as aamir's role- my personal opinion) but then again my opinion would pob change after watching the movie

Ditto on the casting.... vijay as aamir is... i thought a surya/vikram as aamir would be better....

singam in hindi
i personally feel that singam is too much of a mass and south indian film to be made into hindi! but lets see!

kaaka kaaka also is being made into hindi with genelia as jothika's role- i personally feel genelia is too hyper to enact a teacher's role

Singam remade.... that'll be interesting... buti heard ajay devgan is acting.... so my guess is, they will decommercialise it.... ajay does more serious action packed role... so might be a treat, cos the basic storyline of singam can be adapted easily to suit hindi audience....

kaaka kaaka remake made me laugh... plus john doin a surya was funnier.... honestly, i dont think the remake can do wonders in the box office... n if it doesnt.. it's sad cos the script was fantastic.. but poor casting....

recently i've heard that simbu is acting in tamil version of hindi movie "dabangg" and that too salman's role - must be interesting!

Never understood the hype arnd dabaang.. felt it was watching another vijay movie... n simbu as salman... they shd've sticked to vijay... would be far more interesting... n suits vijay's image...
so many remakes nowadays, but only some work!

Nice ratings... agree with most, except ready (i'd give higer ratings)....

True, a huge part of the remake lies in the casting... mahesh babu vs vijay... vijay fitted better with the roles... as for ghajini, mentioned above... i prefer surya, cos i felt he fitted the role better... aamir looked old and plus surya-asin chemistry was far better....

haha jayam ravi... cant stand him.... the originals are always better... n ditto on thillalangadi... was so pissed at watchin the tamil version with jayam... he was extremely irritating and nothing abt ravi was natural... n tamannah was gd, but illena was better... n yes ravi teja n comic timing are always in sync.. he's the kind of actor, you can just look and start laughin... it'll be very hard to do a comedy movie of his....

i'm with you on ravi... dont think he has a personality or image of himself, and plainly copying someone else's style is basically disappointing....

Ready's remake Uthamaputhiran was almost equally entertaining.. Dhanush actually looked good in that movie.. movie was almost the same.. i liked it.. then there was this other movie Adavari matalauke ardhale verule which was remade as Yaradi nee mohini and i like Yaradi nee mohini better becuz Dhanish suited the role.. and that was the first time i actually thought Nayan could act..

preferred ready, just cos of raam.... n yes yaaradi nee mohini was better.. but i think mostly cos dhanush n nayan has better chem n better fitted the role then venkatesh n trisha.... venky looked much too old for the char... n trisha fits a more urban look... nayan was better in the homely look...

In a way remakes are good, cos not many ppl watch the original, esp if they are from diff regional languages... back here we dont get telugu/malayalam films... n i usually watch them online... so most of them here are not exposed to films of the other languages....
gives them a chance to watch some of the better movies with their fav actors in their preferred language....

but it's diff if you watch both langs... then you tend to expect more..and prefer adaptions.... i'd prefer adaptions...

as for the hindi remakes... salman in kick would be a delight... but not sure abt ready.... (srsly the main char is supposed to be someone young n useless)... i dont think neither dhanush nor salman fitter the char...

karka karka... casting is disappointing... i'd prefer actually a saif n kareena....

Ravi Teja is an awsome actor.. totally offtopic but i watched Don Seenu and i had tears laughing.. not a single scene was there in which i couldnt laugh.. it was just hillariouss..

i'm with you on ravi... dont think he has a personality or image of himself, and plainly copying someone else's style is basically disappointing....

Ready is actually an adaption.. Salman is not the useless young guy.. he is a business man in the movie.. so story line would be the same but he wont be Ram.. they would potray him acc to his age..

karka karka... casting is disappointing... i'd prefer actually a saif n kareena....
Ummm actually i dont like Saif and Kareena..πŸ˜†.. Genie can manage but John is a big gamble..πŸ˜†

From the above list i can compare only wanted and ghazini since those are the only ones which i have seen both versions.. i loved mahesh in pokiri... never expected him to do such a film but he pulled it off well..his dialogue delivery was superb.. i m a fan of salman too n would say wanted was ok..ok.. and Ghazini.. suriya..he was amazing.... aamir was good too but when someone has already made a mark on ur mind its difficult to erase

Remakes doesn't mean lack of creativity..its jus potraying the story to a broader audience... not everyone hav access or interest to watch movies in diff language.. n sometimes backdrop doesn't fit in... so its good to watch it in a diff set up..

When the story is already appreciated by a set of audience..there are chances that it'll be appreciated by other too.. so they are expectations but sometimes they fail too stand the pressure.. while remaking it certain things need to be taken into consideration...especially the backdrop setting

Rather than scene to scene copy if they adapt the movie according to the audience taste of particular grp..it would be much more worth..

I would say yes to remakes until they maintain the essence of original n adapt it according to the pulse of audience...

Looking forward to Kick remake in hindi.. i guess salman will pull it off.. though not quite sure about ready...  same wid John n Genelia doing Kaka kaka..not quite sure..

I haven't seen Love Aaj kal but Pawan Kalyan's Teen Maar is an official remake of that.. pawan as lover boy impresses always so hav some hopes but Dabang remake Gabar Singh i m not sure... Dabang is an age old concept for south...

1. Which movies have you watched recently which are remakes & did you like them?
I recently watched siruthai  vikramakkadu remake. I liked this movie alot watching first time i thought this can be watched once but karthi santhanam and baby rakshana's acting made me to watch the movie many timesπŸ‘. after this movie i became a fan of karthi. i watched few scence of vikramakadu and i fell the baby character was not that much intresting as this tamil version.
uttamaputhiran was also a good movie. dhanush looked great in that movie. i didnt watch the telugu version. so i couldnt compare.
yaara dee nee mohini was good in both the version. in snake scene i liked venkat's actingπŸ‘ than dhanush's

2. Does remaking movies mean there's a lack of creativity in the industry?
no i cant feel there will be lack of  creativity.  even remake movies are changed according to the taste of  the audience like the movie ghilli in tamil were changed and given importance to comedy. some scence of siruthai has been changed.
3. Is it fair to put high expectations on a movie based on the success of the original?
it depends upon the cast and the director. some movies in telugu were huge hit. when this was remade in tamil with new actors or unpopular actor it becomes a huge flop. its sad to say but the director shd take care in making remake movies.
4. What should a remake be : scene-to-scene copy of the original or simply an adaptation?
it shd be an adaption. if they feel that acting and direction was great in the original version they can copy scene by scene like santhosh subramaniyam, something something but ravi shdnot copy each and every expression of siddart's.
5. To Remake or To Not Remake?
movies shd be remaked as its a treat for us to watch the movie in our language which has good story and in other language.
