Review: Katha Screenplay Darsakatvam Appalaraju

Film: Katha Screenplay Darsakatvam Appalaraju
Rating: 1.75/5
Banner: Shreya Productions
Cast: Sunil, Colours Swathi, Adarsh, Ajay, Raghu Babu, Harshavardhan, Kovai Sarala, Chalapathi Rao, Narsing Yadav, Krishna Bhagawan, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Tanikella Bharani, Brahmanandam, Ali, Sakshi Gulati, Tanu Roy, Suman Shetty, Raja Ravindra, Venu Madhav, Jayaprakash Reddy, Krishnudu, Kallu Chidambaram, Thameem, Ravi Teja,
Music: Koti
Cinematography: Sudhakar Yekkanti
Director: Ramgopal Varma
Producer: Kiran Koneru
Release date: 18/02/2011

Story:

Appalaraju (sunil) is an aspiring director from Amalapuram and he lands in Hyderabad to make his dream come true. Fate gets him to Rocky (raghu babu) and his creative head Pushpanand (harshavardhan). Appalaraju prepares a script which is a tragedy movie and he manages to convince the hot heroine Kanishka (sakshi) to do the film. He is supported by four assistant directors and one among them is Krishna (swathi). Meanwhile, the hero is initially the superstar Babu garu (adarsh) who reportedly has an affair with Kanishka. But they have a fight and Kanishka ends up recommending the hero's role to Babu garu's rival KT (ajay). The story takes another twist with the arrival of don Sreesailam (brahmi). What happens to Appalaraju's film from there forms the rest of the story.

Presentation:
The director has come up with an appealing storyline but both the presentation and narrative were weak. The dialogues were okay at few places, the script was stale and the screenplay was below average. Background score was alright but only two songs were effective. Cinematography did its bit as required. Editing was alright but was not sharp at the required places. Costumes were natural while the art department was realistic. Sunil gives a committed performance and he does justice to his role. Swathi was good and she does well in the song and dance sequence. Sakshi Gulati was sizzling hot, she has it in her to become a glamour heroine. Adarsh was alright, Ajay was apt, Tanikella was regular, Raghu Babu was effective, Harshavardhan made his presence felt, Brahmanandam was okay, Venu Madhav was annoying, Ali was not upto the mark, M S Narayana was moderate. The others did their bit as required.

Conclusion:
The major flaw in the film is the lack of spirit and comedy in the making. Though the film takes off on a charged up note, the tempo falls down in no time and from then on it goes topsy turvy. The second half tests the patience of the audience and by the climax, they are not waiting for the film to end. As such, this might relate to those working in the film industry but it is hard for the common audience to get what they are looking for. Chances of survival at box office are very weak.

KSD Appalaraju Movie Review

Katha Screenplay Darsakatvam Appalraju Telugu Movie: Ram Gopal Varma surely knows the techniques to be in news. He knows what kind of films and what sort of methods work to grab the attention of media and audience alike. Soon after making controversial Rakta Charitra, RGV has chosen to make a film on Telugu film field. A film about films and film industry has a lot of potential and when it is being made by a director of Ram Gopal Varma caliber it is sure to up the ante. Like always Ram Gopal Varma's KSD Appalaraju too has been the favorite of media circles as the maverick director did his best to put his film in news. So, did it live up to expectations and worth the wait? Here is KSD Appalaraju review…

Story:

Appalaraju (Sunil) who is an avid film buff comes to Hyderabad with an aim to become a top film director. He has a heroine oriented script Nayaki, with which he impresses a smalltime producer Rakhi (Raghu Babu). Later on a top heroine Kanishka (Sakshi Gulati) gets bowled over by Appalaraju's script and readily accepts to star in it. The hero character is too small in it but Kanishka convinces her boy friend and top hero Babu (Adarsh) to be a part of the film. So, Nayaki turns out to be a star studded film in making. However, Kanishka and Babu breaks up and in comes KT (Ajay) an upcoming superstar into the film. This irks Babu and he tries in every possible way to put breaks on Nayaki. On the other hand, Appalraju who was earlier stubborn in changing his script for commercial conveniences and starry glitches starts to make a film according to the hero and producer will. His aim to make a new wave film doesn't get fulfilled but he becomes a successful film director and he also bags a Gurram award as the best comedy director with Nayaki.

Analysis:

Ram Gopal Varma's main intention in making this film is to let the people know how the aspiring directors get compromised due to filmy circumstances and of course the never changing attitude of audience and their love for masala elements. KSD Appalaraju is a satirical movie which targets the film industry and also the audience alike. RGV's idea is good but Appalaraju fails in the execution. There is no proper Katha, screenplay in this film. Ram Gopal Varma takes everything for granted and shows that any director with good script in hands can become a director within no time. But the reality is nowhere near to it.

Even the scenes and content are not at all appealing. The satires don't click as audience doesn't connect with them. Only a few from film industry would know whom RGV is mocking about. The lack of proper script keeps showing its impact as the film moves on towards the intermission. Abrupt placing of songs will hurt the audience even more. Four songs come in the first half and except for one song nothing fits into the narrative. The film gets verbal as it reaches the interval point and badly written dialog adds to the woes of audience.

First half ends in an uninteresting way and RGV messes it up big time in the next hour. Second half is very bad that it will put a big test for the audience patience. It will be pretty hard to sit through this boringly amateurish film. Climax is another tortureas every character gives over the top performance.

Performances:

Sunil tried to be subtle but ended up with a tame show. The lack of interest is seen in his expressions. We can't blame him as the content of the film is that bad that even a senior actor like Sunil too fails to be in his sorts. Ajay and Adarsh are okay as the egoistic heroes and Sakshi Gulati performance is painful to watch. Swathi once again goes overboard as the director asked her to be so. Raghu Babu is fine and Harshavardhan is good. Brahmanandam's comedy falls flat and Tanu Roy's over action is unbearable. Raja Ravinder, Tanikella Bharani, Suman Shetty, Venu Madhav etc did according to the directions of RGV.

Technicalities:

The film is made on a low scale budget and most of the scenes look like a TV serial. Not much was spent on the talkie part. Only a couple of songs are shot well. Cinematography is not up to the standards of Varma. Music is another minus. Background score can be regarded as the worst ever in a mainstream Telugu cinema. Editing is not impressive. Dialogue and other departments failed utterly making this film to be a fine example of what it can be when all the 24 crafts go wrong. Production values are substandard.

Ram Gopal Varma can breathe easy. If Bollywood critics watch this flick they would rate that Aag is way better than Appalaraju. In that way Ram Gopal Varma outclassed himself. Hope he doesn't better it with his next outings.

Plus Points:

- Some satires on film industry
- Song on directors

Minus points:

- Katha
- Screenplay
- Maatalu
- Camera
- Editing
- Darsakatvam

Final Word:

KSD Appalaraju is a satire which has gone wrong completely. Ram Gopal Varma and his film have turned laughing stock in an attempt to laugh at others. This is a good example for how not to make a film. Avoid it by all means.

After a long long time been to a movie first day and it thought me a good lesson to be careful next time.. Embarrassed Ok I had great expectations from this movie..but..but... i'll leave it blank as i don hav right words to describe.. LOL

Coming to the movie, Applaraju comes from Amalapuram to Hyderabad to make a movie and he finds a producer n creative head who earlier did cheap movies... He narrates the script to them n they ask him to make some changes but he refused to budge from his concept...  Later a top heroine Kanishka n through her Babu are casted... and then since they were a hit pair in industry a corporate company decides to invest.. but things turn haywire due to break up btw babu n kanishka n d company withdraws its contract...  Kanishka gets another hero KT on board and the producer finds sreesailam, a don to finance for the movie.. He agrees to finance only if he's given chance to write lyrics for d movie n the hero would agree only if there's a item number... The movie 'Nayaki' which Applaraju thought to be a serious tragedy starts to take turn with these new factors which he hated to put but left with no chance... Also babu with director y.venkat n nobrain owner gv n some raju spread bad rumors about d movie n put d distribution rights in trouble... but how this is all overcomed n nayaki still becomes hit... ultimately getting applaraju guram best director award for his comedy film nayaki which he initially planned to be a serious tragedy..
The film is a big satire on film industry but i guess nenite was much better than this... some parts are funny atleast for a few i guess because a girl beside me was rolling in laughter..

Few characters n voices remind u of some ppl and its a tough exercise to brain LOL Songs...few good few really unnecessary... sunil is a good dancer no doubts regarding that.. Swati's role was ok..

If you want to watch d movie very badly go with nil expectations, otherwise leave it..
