Madhuri Dixit was a top-line model in India before entering the Hindi film industry. She was launched by the Rajshri's with Abodh in 1984. But recognition came to her with the Ek-do-teen dance number in Tezaab (1988), which launched her as a top actress. Her performance in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) was the crowning glory of her career. Her power and security lie in the knowledge that there cannot be another Madhuri Dixit. But to reach this pinnacle of success, the journey from middle-class J.B.Nagar to posh Iris Park, has been full of twists and turns. Madhuri recalls the good, the bad and sometimes humorous path she had to tread all by herself.

Who would dare to call her a middle-class Maharashtrian mulgi? These five-feet-four- inches of proportionate dynamite have been moulded on memories of Madhubala's allure and the classic looks of Suchitra Sen. Having joined films for a lark and then getting hooked, she didn't foresee the heartbreak. Her first few attempts could well have given her a one-way ticket to oblivion. But suddenly, the industry czars discovered the face to launch a 100 films. A gregarious, mischievous girl, she was always up to something. She recalls her childhood days, "I was totally unruly and disorganised. I would throw the family and the house into an uproar before I left for school. I was such a chatterbox, I wouldn't stop talking till I had said all that I wanted to." What a contrast to her now cool, poised and quiet image!

"In school I was once punished for aping a nun who sang soprano. On another occasion, I thoroughly embarrassed my mother. At three, I was asked to sing a classical song at a family get together. Instead, I broke into a cabaret number from a film, replete with all the jhataks and mataks! I guess therein lay the dormant beginnings of 'Ek, Do, Teen'..."

Those numbers, were also the beginning of her acquiring a multitude of fans that now touches a billion over five continents.

"After Abodh, I toyed with the idea of doing just a few roles here and there. I had plans to do anything from genetic research to hotel management. Acting was going to be just a hobby, another dimension to my personality. But I suppose my indecisiveness about a career in academics or a career in films, had me leaning towards the latter. I don't know whether it's called fate or whatever. I only know I had a bee in my bonnet about doing films."

Her initial foray into films though, began with several washouts.

"I think it was the anger in me. I couldn't accept the fact that what I had finally decided to do, was not working out. I was absolutely determined to prove everybody wrong and myself right." Signing a three-film contract with Subhash Ghai and sharing a common secretary with Anil Kapoor, Rikku, also proved to the others, that Madhuri was not available to them. This not only limited her scope but also proved embarrassing when she got linked with Anil Kapoor. Being new to the ways of the industry, she didn't know her way around and accepted whatever that was told to her as gospel truth.

"I was totally at sea. It was like someone who was so used to broad daylight, suddenly being thrown into a pitch-black room. You are groping around and someone is helping you out. Naturally, you do what is advised." But Madhuri did not rebel. Not even when she was signing films in good faith. Her middle-class sensibilities were hurt but she continued to do films like Vardi, Dayavan and Jaidev. "You'll be surprised to know how awkward I felt doing those scenes. What agony I went through thereafter. Even now, I shudder to think of those moments. If I looked convincing, it's probably because I didn't want to do the scenes again and again, so I gave my best in the first takes. I thought to myself, I should be done with it fast. I detached and psyched myself into doing what was demanded of the character in the film. So can you imagine the trauma I must've have gone through? "

"Lovemaking scenes, however hot, cannot ensure the success of a film. I don't have to do everything just because I am an actress. You have to be conscious of your social position as well. Somehow, in Hindi films, an actress who does those scenes is looked down upon as a loose girl. I have to keep this in mind. You can show passion without being over explicit. Luckily, I am now in a position to assert myself and refuse to do anything I am not happy doing." She is glad that Dayavans and Vardis are all behind her.

The initial grounding in the social circles of the industry, can be just as embarrassing. Hobnobbing with celebrities, did she feel gawky while being introduced to such high profiles?

"Well, I wasn't some uneducated village girl. I'm convent educated so it didn't give me a complex. But yes, you begin to feel less confident when you are faced with superficiality, hypocrisy and those show-offs. People just don't behave normal. So that does make you wonder whether you are from the right kind of school or whether they are. You know how to strike up a conversation but it may not be getting across. While you are saying something very intelligent, the socialite may be looking towards the door because someone with bigger diamonds than hers is entering. It's not only sick it's also very funny."

Clothes maketh a man and the same goes for a woman. It's only recently that Madhuri began to take extra care of her taste in clothes and make-up.

'Earlier, I didn't really take care of my looks, my hairstyles or my clothes. In fact, I didn't even bother about the subtle nuances of a character! I think I learnt a lot from Vinod Chopra and Parinda. When I entered the industry I used to wear comfortable clothes because even at home, you'll find me in the oldest and the most faded clothes. I didn't realise that once you are a heroine, you are expected to dress in glittering jewelry, Kanjeevaram saris and salwar- kameez. To doll up so much at such a young age took me time to adjust to the idea."

"I was the kind to wear just kohl and lipstick, even to functions. Can you imagine, I used just about any soap to bathe with, even Rin at times, as long as it was cleansing," she laughs. "I just couldn't communicate if there were more than three people around me. I withdrew into a shell and most people thought I was sulking. They gave me complexes."

When you have the best of everything, you start finding fault with whatever you've done or whatever you have. "I didn't like my nose. I didn't think I was beautiful. I had this perennial pimple problem which I tried to control by drinking a lot of juice and liquid. Initially I lacked confidence and felt that people were just being polite when they said I was beautiful. Especially since I was not being accepted as an actress. I wished my nose was smaller and that I was a little taller. I was envious of Waheeda Rehman who has the perfect nose and of Dimple and Farha, who have the best skins." Those days, she also had these recurring nightmares. "I can't remember how they started or ended but I could just hear a voice calling my name, louder and louder, till it just exploded in my ears. I would then wake up in fright. On the days I had those nightmares, I noticed that I was generally very disturbed."

Today, she doesn't face them anymore. Life is a dream, a fantasy of being the highest paid actress in Indian cinema. Today, she doesn't believe in the low profile bit. She makes it a point to attend all the major happenings if she's in town, complete with the Kanjeevarams! "I won't pretend that it didn't flatter me to be compared to great actresses like them. But I felt that my smile was natural and my position was far too junior to Sridevi's. I guess comparisons however, are inevitable."

Gone are the days when her smile was compared to Madhubala's and her position was second to Sridevi's. Today, she is herself.

Madhuri missed meeting favourite director - Manoj Nigh Syamlan

Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, who is a big fan of Indian-American director, producer and writer Manoj 'Night' Shyamalan's work, regrets that she couldn't be formally introduced to the spook specialist in Delhi. But she is happy he was being recognised alongside her.

The two film personalities were given Padma Shri Saturday in the capital.

"Never mind. It's wonderful to see talent from India making a name in Hollywood and being recognised at home as well. I feel, with increasing globalisation more and more Indian talent will be recognised all over the world," Madhuri, who made a comeback with "Aaja Nachle", told IANS.

"I've watched his 'Sixth Sense' like six times. When I was going to watch it for the first time, I was told I'd never be able to guess the ending. I thought I'd be able to because I thought it would be something impossible, which I'll catch on to. But I still couldn't guess the suspense. Sheer genius," added the actress who gave hits like "Tezaab", "Ram Lakhan" "Beta" and "Dil To Pagal Hai".

Madhuri's husband Sriram Nene was also here for the occasion but he left for the US from Delhi immediately after the ceremony. Madhuri, however, stayed back and is now in Mumbai for a week to catch up with friends and relatives.

Delhi was tough on Madhuri's health.

"I've got this wracking cough because of the humidity. And the contrast when I'm indoors cooped in the air conditioning and the heat outside is making it worse. Thankfully, I didn't bring my kids along."

Before leaving for Delhi for the Padma Shri, Madhuri attended the premiere of "Jimmy" for her co-star Mithun Chakraborty's sake. "Jimmy" is Mimoh's launch vehicle.

"If you remember, I had done one of my best films 'Prem Pratigyaa' with Mithunda. From the beginning he was such a gentleman, always very professional. Even if he was late, he'd warn me, 'Don't come on the set before 11 a.m. tomorrow.' Yeah, that's what it meant to be disciplined back then."

In fact, she met another of her other co-star Govinda at the "Jimmy" premiere.

"Yeah Govinda too was very sweet. Fortunately, everything in Bollywood is getting more organised. We get ready scripts. So there's more incentive to come. Ten years ago it'd have been impossible for me to come down to Mumbai to work. I wouldn't even have thought of it."

Sajid Khan wishes Sridevi, Madhuri were younger
Actor-turned-director Sajid Khan is looking for a talented heroine for his second directorial venture "Housefull", and says he would have cast Sridevi or Madhuri Dixit if they were younger.

"Actually, I would love to cast either Sridevi or Madhuri Dixit for the role, but I wish they were younger. They don't suit the role with their age now," Sajid told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The multi-starrer romantic comedy "Housefull" is Sajid's second film after his successful directorial debut "Heyy Babyy".

He has finalised most of the actors except one. The stars he's roped in include Deepika Padukone, Jiah Khan, Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh and Boman Irani.

Sajid is yet to zero in on an actress to play the third female lead. And he needs someone with good comic timing.

"I still haven't been able to choose anyone. Whoever she will be will have to be extremely gifted. I want a quality actor whose comedy timing is great. Maybe I cast a new girl only. I'm not too sure," he said.

At the moment, Sajid is basking in the success of his celebrity talk show "Sajid's Superstars" that airs every Saturday on entertainment channel Colors.

He says the biggest surprise on the show is yet to come. "Akshay Kumar's episode is the most superb episode of my show. It is yet to air and has a huge surprise."

Sajid, who digs out the deepest secrets of stars with a pinch of humour on his show, is quite content with the response to the programme.

"I was very confident that the show would do well. It has substance in it and a lot of entertainment value. You get to enjoy Bollywood stars as people. They talk on TV like never before. And I don't get to know of the success of the show as much from the audience. It is when actors call me up and say we want to be on your show that I know the show is a hit," he said.

However, the actor-director Sajid refused to divulge the names of actors who wanted to be seen on "Sajid's Superstars".

Sajid's recipe to make the show a hit is to have "no script at all". "I don't do much research on the actors except for pre-selecting the video clipping that I want to show and that's all," he concluded.

His sister Farah, who directed "Main Hoon Na" and "Om Shanti Om", had choreographed two songs in "Heyy Babyy", but Sajid says they will never get together to direct a film.

"I don't think Farah and I will make a film together. She is a director in her own right. But, yes, she did two songs for me in 'Heyy Babyy' and I hope she continues doing so," he said.

Madhuri's youngest son approved title song of 'Aaja Nachle'

Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit's two sons enjoy their mother's work so much that when it came to selection of her much awaited comeback vehicle "Aaja Nachle's" title song, her youngest son Ryan gave the final nod.

"I had gone to the studio with my two sons -- Arin and Ryan -- to select the title song among various options. As soon as both my sons heard the number they were mesmerised and Ryan started dancing," Madhuri told IANS.

"We all looked at each other and said 'this one is going to be a chartbuster' and by God's grace people are liking the song," she maintained.

The versatile actress, who ruled Bollywood for more than a decade, said that her sons love to see her dancing on screen and all the media attention they are getting.

"My kids are thoroughly enjoying all the media attention. They are never tired of seeing me dancing on screen. Whenever they see the trailers of the film on television they start dancing. And Ryan, who is just two-and-a-half years old, urges 'dance mommy dance'."

And how did husband Shriram Nene react when she decided to return to filmdom?

"There was no reaction from him. We both discussed and talked in detail about how we would work it out.

"And after watching the film he said he liked it, as it is clearly visible that the effort made by all of us is genuine. Also, the audience can relate to the characters," she said.

Madhuri, who last appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Devdas", is playing the role of a choreographer in her forthcoming film.

To appeal to the evolving taste of the Indian audience she did a lot of preparation before making a comeback.

"I used to work out four times in a week to get back in shape, as after having two babies I had put on a lot of weight. However, I have always been a health freak so it was not very taxing."

Commenting on the secret of aging gracefully she said, "It's a mind over matter kind of thing. I just don't think about age. I still feel young. And to do away with the lines be vice free, do yoga, meditation and eat healthy."

The Dhak Dhak girl, as she is popularly called, said she would take up only those projects that would be completed within a strict time frame.

"Currently I have only this film in hand and I have not thought of anything else yet," said the star who has given hits like "Tezaab", "Dil", "Beta", "Khalnayak", "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun" and "Dil To Pagal Hai".

Only Madhuri can replace me in 'Guide' remake: Waheeda Rehman

Legendary actress Waheeda Rehman says Madhuri Dixit is the only actress who can do justice to her role in Dev Anand's all time classic "Guide", if it is remade today.

"The role requires an actress who should be a good dancer. Madhuri is both a good actress and a dancer," she said in Mumbai Tuesday at a function organised by Enlighten Film Society to felicitate her for her contributions to movies.

She recalled how Hiralal, who choreographed the dance sequences of "Guide", worked hard on her and how she tried her best to come up to his expectations. The film was released in 1965.

"Shooting for 'Guide' was one of my best experiences because the movie itself was close to reality," she remarked.
