Part 18: A Brewing Storm...

The pitter-patter of the raindrops gently drummed against the window; the cold glass was so soothing to Shilpa's forehead as she leant against it, watching the monsoon drench the greenery in its wake so it looked like a blurred watercolour.

She hugged her knees to her chest and rested her chin on top. It had been a very exhausting, very longā€¦.yet perfect day. Half the day had been spent reaching Amritsar orphanage yet the other half, despite the tiresome journey, was spent playing with the children. Every second she had spent on the road had become worth it in that fleeting moment she had reached her destinationā€¦

It felt as if she was finally home.

Despite feeling sluggish when she had pushed open the bright green gate, her mood had instantly changed when she had seen the tiny faces as they turned curiously towards the sound of the creaking hinges. She had literally stepped foot into a different world; her world.

A glowing smile on her face, nostalgia had filled her every sense, blocking out her present and taking her back to her fourteen year-old self. The ambience filled with squeals and cheerful laughter, the gentle yet firm scolding of the supervisor, whom everyone called "Bebe" reminded her of Maasi, stifling laughter as she attempted to calm the enthused children.

She had been too preoccupied to notice a little girl curiously approach her. Her sleek jet black hair fell over her tiny shoulders. Brushing her fringe out of her eyes to get a proper look at the woman standing before her, she pursed her lips in deliberation. She scrutinised Shilpa, measuring her up and down whilst twisting her cute white sandal in the ground, nervously. Tilting her head up at her, as they made eye-contact, she squeaked "Do you want to play, too?"

****

Sid smiled to himself as he remembered how Shilpa had crouched down, matching the girl's height and embraced her in a soft hug, before caressing her face answering in a smilar tone. "Only if I can be in your team" she'd said, before pulling the girl's cheek playfully.

The immediate connect shouldn't have surprised him, Shilpa was the friendliest person he knew. There were so many sides to her that anyone could relate to her. Admittedly, it wasn't accurate to say she had tons of friends, but her persistent desire to help anyone who was in need meant she was everyone's friend. Come to think of it, there had only been a couple of people who hadn't got on with herā€¦.whether it was coincidental or not, the same people were now together and funnily enough banished to their own world.

"Aapka naam kya hai?" Shilpa had asked.

Suddenly blushing as if Shilpa had given her the biggest compliment in the world, the girl fidgeted with her fingers. Timidly she replied "Diya".

****

Swivelling her legs across, Shilpa stood up and ambled to the bed. Zipping up her freshly emptied duffel bag, she placed it neatly in the space beside her dresser.  An assortment of clothes now lay folded in the single wardrobe and her toiletries sat neatly on the cabinet before the mirror.

Diya was a sweetheart.

The moment Shilpa had latched onto her outstretched hand and run alongside her to join in the games had meant they became fast friends. Shilpa had always been fond of children but whether it had been Diya's cheeky smile or the fact that she was the youngest, therefore the smallest of the group, she'd managed to establish a soft spot in her heart.

Shilpa stretched, spreading out her arms, breathing in the air around her, so new yet so familiar. The feeling was so good it was just what she neededā€¦she hadn't realised how much she missed home and Maasi until now. She craved her motherly embraceā€¦

There was no excuse for her failure to get in touchā€¦it had just been easier in a way. All Maasi had to do was look at her and immediately determine something was wrong. It was probably the tell-tale eyes. She wouldn't look at Maasi and looking away just proved that she was lying after telling her she was ok.  She was aware that if she'd spoken to Maasi again, her questions would eventually break her and she'd blurt out everything from the past 6 months.

Her experience had been locked away in a Pandora's box, closed shut, forbidden to be opened againā€¦else the consequences would be disastrous. Just look at what had happened with her and Sidā€¦

The sound of heavy rainfall interrupted her thoughts as the flow became more constant, the strumming of droplets against the rooftop and accompanying gusts of wind caused her to run towards the window. She watched as narrow slits of water pummelled through the sky like little darts piercing the landscape. Opening the window, she felt a chill run down her back as she shivered. Extending her palm, the water slowly drenched her skin. She cupped her hand as the drops collected one by one forming a small pool, and when it was nearly full, she happily flicked them back up into the air again.

Oh, how she loved the rain.

Unexpected movement down below quickly caught her attention. She peered into the distance, sheltering her eyes with the back of her hand before leaning out to ensure she wasn't seeing things.

Five minutes later she stood before the small group of children. Soaked from head-to-toe, her white kurti clung to her body as she placed her hands on her hips. Jumping around excitedly, they all stopped abruptly at the inclination of being watched, immediately turning to face her instead.

"Tum log yahan kya kar rahe ho?" she inquired crossly, a slight frown adorning her forehead.

She observed as they looked at one another with sombre faces, caught red-handed in the act. Diya took half a step forward, opening her mouth to respond. Shilpa raised an eyebrow at her and she fell back at once, her mouth now opening and closing like a goldfish around empty air.

Shilpa's ears pricked up as she heard Diya whisper next to the boy beside her, "Yeh didi ko kya hogaya?" As Shilpa shook her head disapprovingly, she gulped. Folding her arms across her chest, they all stared at her in silence awaiting their fateā€¦

And without warning Shilpa burst into laughter.

Confused, they gawped at her blankly, then again at each other before turning back to her again. Rolling her eyes, she noticed the puddle forming in front of her and kicked at it teasingly, spraying them all with water.

*****

It's funny how things can change in the space of a second.

Sid had been reading up on his schedule for the next day when he heard the commotion.

From the very first days as a medical student, throughout his internship and even till date, he had always been told to be prepared. However, there was always a rapid increase in his heart rate whenever there was an actual emergency.

More than an adrenaline rush it was probably a curiosity that stirred within him; numerous questions bubbling for answers, what the circumstances were, how bad the patient's condition was, how many people needed to be treated, the urgency and whether it could be dealt with in the time restraint, whether he needed to be aware of any side effects to medication etc. etc.

Every case was so individual that there really was no possibility of ever being preparedā€¦Even if his face was composed, only he knew how fearful he was withinā€¦

Grabbing his stethoscope from his lab coat pocket which lay over his chair, he rushed to the open landing outside his bedroom door which faced the entrance gate. He always requested to be put on the first floor in lieu of any situation which required him to leave promptly.

Appropriately, he followed the noise to understand the cause of the disturbance. As his eyes impatiently scanned the grounds he skidded to a halt.

He had been so sure that the panicked screams he had overheard a second ago were those requiring assistance of some sort, in fact he was certain of it. Yet now as he watched in disbelief over the gathering before him, all he heard were delightful shrieks of innocent banter emanating from the kids as they chased each other in the pouring rain.

He paused in confusion and looked around, double-checking that there was no trouble about. Suddenly, another sound reached him, something a lot more familiar, separate from the restā€¦

The sound of Shilpa's laughter.

His head spun back to the children. He blinked with uncertainty, had he been mistaken again? How could Shilpa be here?

He glanced over, squinting as he tried to see past the showers, to see if he could recognise her amongst the huddle. Maybe it was just his imaginationā€¦againā€¦

"Yaaay!" Shilpa emerged from the centre of the cluster as she raised a squealing Diya into the air. Sid's eyes widened in awe as she proceeded to swing her around in circles, Diya's feet flying out before her as they both chortled hysterically.

Despite Shilpa's height, she had blended in well with the children around her. You couldn't tell that she was a mature adult amongst her company, a medical intern between young infants; she was just like them, a child enjoying the monsoon.

He witnessed them jumping repeatedly in puddles, their sodden clothes soaking up even more water. He watched in amusement as they danced around with each other holding hands, linking arms. He chuckled when the mischevious boys kicked the murky water at her and she responded with equal zest. He had never comprehended something so innocentā€¦.he had never seen Shilpa like this.

"What's going on here?!"

Shilpa wavered suddenly, the children imitating her guilty stance as they watched Bebe rush out from underneath the shelter of the building.

"Actually Bebeā€¦"

"That's enough, I don't need explanations" She tutted at them, ushering the little boy beside her, "Come on, inside you go before you all catch colds tomorrow and I have no choice but to tend to you bed ridden monsters! Chalo sabā€¦."

Sid laughed as Shilpa protested the loudest. "Please, Bebeā€¦it's so much fun. Look-" and she pinched down Bebe's headscarf effortlessly.

Bebe gasped and shielded her greying hair from the rain as there was an uproar of delightful cheers and glee around her. Shilpa giggled and raised her hand protectively, ducking slightly as Bebe tapped her lightly on the head, "Badmaash".

Lifting her scarf back onto her head, "Chalo sab andar, otherwise I won't tell you the story of the handsome prince tonight!" She smiled as the children cried out in objection, others grumbling, nonetheless running albeit hesitantly back up the stairs, racing each other indoors.

"Careful!" she called after them. She turned to Shilpa, holding her elbow, "And you, I'll personally escort you. Come on, inside we goā€¦"

"Massi-".

Sid observed as Bebe turned around in surprise. Shilpa blushed, holding onto the hand that held her, "ā€¦mera matlab Bebeā€¦ Aap chaliye, main abhi aati hoon" she requested. Bebe studied Shilpa for a few short seconds, wordlessly. Shilpa shrugged her shoulders, "Please?"

Finally, Bebe's lips broke into a small smile. "Teek hai, jaldi aaja". Stroking her head before turning, she walked away, shaking her head in amusement.

Now alone, Shilpa raised her head up towards the looming grey rain clouds. Her lips parted slightly as she felt the water moisten them. Stretching her arms out before her, she closed her eyes, embracing the water as it fell on her. She twirled in enjoyment as her dupatta flew out around her like a sheet in the wind.

She stopped and raised her arms higher into the air. She smiled, crinkling her nose, flinching as the little pellets tickled her skin. She shook her head, slowly wiping her face with the palms of her hands, then raking her fingers upwards through the roots of her hair, opening her eyes slowly as she did.

Sid stared fixedly at her, mesmerised.

He jumped as his phone buzzed in his hand, shaking him out of his trance.

Bewildered he looked at his phone, then back at Shilpa as she continued to skip and twirl around, still oblivious to his presence.  He blinked, clearly discomforted.

The word BHAI flashed on his phone and unsettled, he answered the call.

"Hello?..." he peered around. " Erā€¦No no, there's no reception problem. Maybeā€¦I think it's because I'm just stood outside. Hold on". Glancing back at Shilpa a final time as she laughed to herself, he cautiously turned back towards his confined bedroom.

Placing her hands at the nape of her neck, Shilpa lowered her head, tossing her hair over simultaneously. She brushed her fingers through, ensuring every strand had absorbed the water before swishing them back up again.

She trembled as there was a clap of thunder somewhere in the distance.

Pouting, she began to tread warily through the wet grass till she reached the steps, seeking refuge under the ridge which jutted out slightly from under the roof. Now stationary, she felt her lips quiver from the cold as she rubbed her hands together.

Her eyes shone as she watched the view before her, the darkness and shadowy silhouettes of the looming trees now making the pleasant ambience from before suddenly sinister.

She rustled water from her hair, wiping away drops which fell onto her face; out from her eyes.

She froze, her fingers still entwined in her hair as she became aware of someone hovering by the gate.

It was a man; tall with broad shoulders. Wearing a mac, water trickled off him as he stood rooted to the spot, unmoving. He was carrying a bag of some sortā€¦possibly a briefcase. From the way he was standing, she was troubled as she grasped he was watching herā€¦.and might have been for some time..

"Delay?" enquired Sid, puzzled. He pinched the bridge of his nose. "But Dr. Nupur is there.Yeah, I was informed of her patient. How is she now?" He fixed the phone between his face and shoulder and began to collect his sheets from the desk. "Under observation still... I see, wellā€¦you're leading the project. What are we to do in your absence?" He paused "A subā€¦? Who?"

Restlessly, Shilpa blinked away to adjust her dupatta, draping it across her shoulders, concurrently pulling at the neckline of her kurti. Ensuring she was decent, as much as she could possibly be, she glanced back towards him and fell back as she realised he had moved closer towards her.

Her breathing became rapid as she watched him, nervously. He was stood still again.

It was purely the situation that had caused this uneasiness within her; she was stood alone, wearing clothing that was almost transparent, the darkness surrounding her, and then this random stranger ā€¦procuring out of thin air at this time of night. There was more than enough reason for her to be nervous.

Alarm bells rang in her mind as she held her breathā€¦waiting.

She gasped as he took another step forward and it was enough. Immediately she spun around without another thought, sprinting up the stairs.

He watched her till she disappeared inside, his beady eyes fixed on the spot she had been in just seconds before. Now, eerily vacantā€¦he blinked away, his eyes facing the ground as he strode towards the building.

A flash of lightning illuminated a metal plate on the briefcase he supported. Inscribed was a name, 'Dr. Ansh Juneja'.

****

Shilpa slammed her bedroom door shut behind her and stood against it, panting. Her eyes clenched shut, she failed in her attempt to relax.

Questions circled her mind as she thought of the man.

There was something that had disturbed herā€¦the way he had been looking at her. Although she'd been unable to see his features clearly, he had given off a vibeā€¦.she'd experienced something she couldn't explain. The only thing she knew was that she hadn't like it.

She blinked, frustrated. Who was he anyway?

A part of her hoped she wouldn't have to ever find out but another part was more realistic. Of course, he had been approaching the orphanageā€¦ on that basis there was a very strong possibility she would meet him again. But why did it feel that when she did, it would be like the Pandora's box had been opened?

Why did it feel that when she didā€¦ the consequences would be disastrous?

Sid stared fixedly at her, mesmerised.

This has got to be my most favorite line.šŸ˜

This whole FF is brilliant but I have to say that this chapter simply surpasses the previous ones. The mere description of Shilpa's rain dance and Sid's reaction to her was simply excellent.
Shilpa has a carefree, happy spirit and somewhere Sid is obviously drawn to that...especially since he has been submerged in sadness most of the time,.

I loved how Sid muses about Shilpa being the friendliest person around...it means he has started noticing and thinking about little, little things related to her.

I really wish Shilpa would have seen Sid standing there in the rain watching her...but I also why she didnt. Sid needed to experience that moment alone without her knowledge.

Man Abhi has bad timing!šŸ˜”šŸ˜†

Ansh Juneja?...Its weird how I hate him so much already.šŸ˜† But I am sure he is going to spice up the proceedings? šŸ˜‰
Its funny how when Sid was staring at her she didnt feel anything but she was instantly alerted to this Juneja's presence and was freaked put later as she thought about him.

There was something that had disturbed herā€¦the way he had been looking at her. Although she'd been unable to see his features clearly, he had given off a vibeā€¦.she'd experienced something she couldn't explain. The only thing she knew was that she hadn't like it.

Hmm ...is he a villain?

Please, please update soon Nish...this is one of the most amazing FF I have ever read.
