Tum Kaun Ho?
A Maaneet Fan Fic

Maan had never thought about it before, but he was grateful to the creators of blackberries. If it weren't for them, he would be wasting his time and bored out of his mind, sitting in this car. It was all due to Handa. When he finally got a hold of her, she was going to receive the most terrifying lecture of her life. Not only had she disrupted his day with her disappearing act, but she had made him feel the fool in front of Dadi.
On discovering that Geet was not only working as his assistant, but nanny to JD and unpaid cook for the entire family, Maan had become furious. How could things be happening in his own home, and he not know about them? Dadi had smartly rebuked him for getting so upset, saying it wasn't their fault if he didn't bother to pay attention to what was going on around him. He had nobody to blame for his lack of knowledge but himself. Maan had seethed, but could hardly refute her logic. He left the hiring of household staff to Nakul, and the care of JD to Dadi. As long as things were running smoothly, he didn't care to become involved.
Even now, he didn't want to be involved, but Dadi had virtually twisted his arm. After spending more than an hour trying to contact Geet, and being unable to reach her, Dadi began fearing the worst. She was adamant that Geet would never behave in such a way, and that something was terribly wrong. When not even contacting Geet's friend yielded any results, she insisted that he go to Geet's residence, and find out what was happening. Maan reluctantly complied. That was why he was now sitting in the back seat of the car, being driven by Nakul from his comfortable home in Kenilworth, to Geet's home in Chicago.
Despite what his grandmother thought, Maan was not convinced that there was any real problem. He thought it more likely that she was trying to take revenge for his decision not to allow Nakul to take her home. As she seemed to have made herself such an integral part of his household, not showing up was an easy way to cause him grief. His morning coffee was a good example.
Despite the assurances from Nakul and Dadi that Geet had been preparing all their food, Maan still had difficulty believing it. As soon as they were alone in the car, he began interrogating Nakul. How did this supposed superwoman, Miss Geet Handa, manage to cook 3 meals a day, plus prepare an ample amount of coffee, all exactly to his specifications, and still complete all her office work on time? Nakul couldn't say how she did her office work, but he knew all her comings and goings around the house and was only to happy to give Maan a rundown of her day.
She would arrive at the Mansion at 6:30 am, without fail, Monday through Saturday, and immediately start her meal preparations for the day. Through a combination of preplanning, help from Nakul, slow cookers, and a bunch of other things that Maan could care less about, she organized and prepared their meals everyday, often using her free time on Saturdays to prepare a lot for the next week.
Nakul was extremely proud of his own ability to follow her simple directions for getting her previously prepared food ready. He was so enthusiastic that Maan had to yell at him to stop singing Handa's praises, just to get him to shut up. Maan very nearly asked sarcastically how they survived without Handa on Sundays, but thought better of it. He actually knew the answer himself. Sundays were his day with JD, and they always went out to eat for breakfast and lunch. Sunday dinner had traditionally been made by Dadi, and it had been so from before Maan was born.
Nakul's praises of Handa continuously rang in Maan's ears, making him feel agitated. The more he thought about it, the more he began to mistrust this woman that had some how wormed her way into his life. One of the things he had done while Dadi had repeatedly tried calling Geet, was to find out just how much she was being paid for the 'extra' work she did for them. When he found out that she was paid less than half of what she made as his assistant to care for JD, and nothing to cook for them, he was shocked. What kind of person did this much work without demanding proper compensation? In Maan's view of the world, no one did. If they were, then they must have some ulterior motive. Now that he was aware of what was happening, he intended to discover what that motive was.

"Nakul, where are we?"
"Austin Boulevard. We're nearing W. Ohio St. I'll have to drop you off near Geet Madam's apartment, and find somewhere else to park."
"Don't bother parking at all, just drive around. I'll give you a call when I need you." Maan didn't want Nakul parking in this neighborhood, even during the day. He couldn't believe that Handa lived here. When Nakul told him she lived on W. Ohio St., he thought it would be somewhere closer to downtown, not Austin. He knew there were worse neighborhoods in Chicago, but Austin had a pretty bad reputation. He certainly would never let Dadi come here, and he didn't much want to be here himself.
Nakul dropped him off at a corner and with Handa's address firmly in his mind, he set off down the street. Being the man that he was, Maan strode down the sidewalk oozing confidence and a forbidding air. Anyone who thought of messing with him, would think twice seeing the look on his face. As it was, most people in the area were keeping themselves scarce at the moment, due to the two police cars that were parked on the street. Maan paid them no heed, as he was sure it was a common enough occurrence for the police to be around, given the amount of crime seen in this part of Chicago.
Finally coming to the building he was looking for, Maan got ready for the confrontation that he knew was moments away. He was actually looking forward to it. Geet Handa had to be given a proper scolding, for making his grandmother worry, and for thinking that she could get away with troubling Maan Singh Khurana.
When Maan entered the building and made his way to the second floor, he experienced an unexpected shock. A police officer was standing in the middle of the hallway, just to the right of an apartment whose door was open. Maan stopped for a moment, feeling something in the pit of his stomach that he didn't want to acknowledge. It didn't matter that she hadn't shown up, hadn't called, and hadn't picked up any phone call. Nothing had happened to her. He wasn't going to believe the horrible feeling that was starting to pervade his entire body. Shaking off the unpleasant sensation, Maan made his way down the hall, and demanded to know what was going on.
"Sir, we're investigating a crime that took place last night. I'm detective Sharon Brown, and you are?"
"Maan Singh Khurana." Ignoring the looks of recognition that passed between the officers at hearing his name, Maan inquired, "What happened? Where is Geet?"
"Geet Handa, female, age 24, resident of 5882 W. Ohio St. apartment 2A."
"Yes, that's Geet," responded Maan, not quite sure why they were speaking about his assistant like she was a statistic. "Where is she? What happened to her?"
"Sir, what is your relationship with Ms. Handa?"
"She works for me as an office assistant. I want to know why you're not answering my question?"
"Mr. Khurana, last night Ms. Handa was the victim of an apparent robbery attempt."
Not knowing how to react, Maan did the only thing he could to gain control of the situation. He began rapidly questioning the police. Where was Geet? How much had been taken? Who was responsible? Why weren't they out there arresting the culprits?
"Mr. Khurana we've been doing our best to find answers to your questions, but it's been difficult to do without speaking with Ms. Handa. Maybe if you could answer a few questions for us, we'd have more to go on."
"What do you mean 'without speaking with Ms. Handa'? What happened to her? WHERE IS SHE?"
Detective Brown could see that she wasn't going to get anything out of him but more demands, and as she thought it unlikely that he was involved, decided to tell him Geet's whereabouts. "Mr. Khurana, Ms. Handa was rushed by ambulance to the emergency room of MacNeal Hospital to be treated for a stab wound and severe loss of blood. We haven't been able to speak with her, because she has not yet regained consciousness."
As soon as Maan heard those words, he pulled out his phone and called Nakul, ordering him to come back to Geet's apartment building immediately. Nakul could tell from his voice that something was wrong. He drove back as quickly as he could, and when Maan barely let the car come to a stop before yanking the door open, he knew the situation was serious.

MacNeal Hospital had never before been graced with the presence of Maan Singh Khurana, and it wasn't a particularly pleasant experience. The staff who were working that morning had the unfortunate privilege to be subjected to the angry demands of MSK, Chicago businessman, and world famous finical investor. Maan didn't care that he was in a hospital. He didn't care that he was disturbing patients. All he cared about was that his demands be met. He expected to be shown to Geet Handa's room, and to speak with the doctor in charge without delay. Anyone not complying promptly to his demands, would find themselves in danger of loosing their jobs.
Standing outside the window of the ICU, Maan felt like he was in an alternate reality. What he was seeing couldn't possibly be real. If he just tried hard enough, he would wake up from this dream, where a young woman lay on a hospital bed, with tubes and machines surrounding her, looking more dead than alive.
