Will GEC Break New Ground?

ALChougule Posted: Jan 21, 2011 at 1650 hrs IST

2010 was marked by creative stagnation. A report on what's in store this year.

With a few exceptions, for most channels 2010 was a year of little experimentation and sluggish groW*H. Over reliance on too many one-hour specials of fiction shows and special events on weekends was a clear sign of desperation and creative stagnancy. So how would 2011 pan out? Will GECs break new ground? Will channels play safe by continuing with some of the earlier themes and stories that have worked? Or will they attempt new concepts and break new ground?

According to Ashvini Yardi,Head of Programming, Colors, 2011 will be a year of television consciousness. She elaborates, "Broadcasters who have been running after getting the most eyeballs will now start vying for something much more important, getting the right content. Concepts, stories, ideas and content will take precedence. Fiction shows will be in the search for the next big and meaningful idea while reality shows will see a lot of India-centric shows cropping up, and not Indian copies of foreign shows."

However, Star India's executive creative director Vivek Bahl doesn't rule out continuation of some old themes. "But we will also be looking at a lot of fresh themes, in both fiction and non- fiction, which will be reflected in our early launches in 2011," he assures. Star Plus will launch three weekend shows, Wife Bina Life, Pyaar Mein Twist and Love U Zindagi from January 29, which will be followed by Aap Ki Kachheri and new line-up of weekday fiction in March end. Zee's new year programming mantra is not going to be different either. Having launched Dance India Dance Doubles in the last week of 2010, the channel is all set to offer a sequel of Chhoti Bahu and Sanskar Laxmi. "Zee is a socially-responsible channel known for doing progressive stories  We are here to entertain our viewers and not preach (Ahh so burning Radhika was entertainment  While doing sweet and heartwarming stories, we will also come up with one or two different shows," promises Zee's head of fiction, Sukesh Motwani.

After launching Maati Ki Banno in the last week of 2010, Colors has replaced Bigg Boss with two dailies Phulwa and Mukti Bandhan in 9 to 10 pm band. On the non-fiction front, the channel's immediate launch is Chak Dhoom Dhoom Team Challenge, which will be followed by Guinness World Records - Ab India Todega. Imagine, which struggled for reach and audience's attention last year promises to take the battle in the enemy's territory with creative and financial fire power this year. "Having broken new ground in fiction with our recent launches Aarakshan, Baba Aisa Var Dhoondo and Gunahon Ka Devta, we will re-open the belly of general entertainment programming in both and fiction and non-fiction genres," claims Sameer Nair, CEO, Turner. With Zor Ka Jhatka Total Wipeout hosted by Shah Rukh Khan to be aired this month, Sameer hopes to stir up the reality TV space. Ratan Ka Rishta is another non-fiction show Imagine is banking on to increase its audience share.

Sony, on the other hand, will continue with its legacy of differentiated content. "We don't follow the typical GEC path. Saas Bina Sasural is a novel concept, so is Krishnaben Khakhrawala, which has a 45-year-old protagonist. We have two fiction shows from YRF, Khote Sikke and Kismat lined up for January besides our non-fiction offering Ma Exchange," says Sony's head of programming Ajay Bhalwankar. Youth channels like MTV, Channel [V] and UTV Bindaas will also follow the same mantra of going with some old formats and bringing in a few new ones. Bindaas has started airing Dadagiri 4 and Love Lock-Up in January. Says Nikhil Gandhi, business head Bindaas, "Youth channels are primarily driven by reality shows woven around romance, relationships, action and music themes. We will innovate in reality space and also get into youth fiction for the first time," he informs.

If Colors and Zee went through several ups and downs in 2010, Star Plus staged a smart recovery. It is likely to stay at the top with some aggressive moves, though 'wounded tiger' Colors will not let it walk away with glory so easily. SAB marched well ahead of Imagine and is gradually inching closer to the fourth position. Sony too gave a scare to Zee for the third slot and the battle between the two will continue with renewed vigour. The new year began with Star Plus leading the GEC space with 396 GRPs with Colors at 103 GRPs behind at 283, followed by Zee at 224, Sony (179), SAB (146) and Imagine (86). While a mix of some old and new ideas, themes and formats is what everyone is promising the immediate worry for GECs is the cricket carnival in the form of cricket World Cup and IPL from February to May. Any trump card that they may have will be opened in June .

An interesting article, we can dissect like Shanti says.

Well STARPLUS did try out a new theme with their new show at 9:00 pm, I don't think it is working wonders and Grps are falling.I am waiting for Bidaai2 to be back with CB2 back. Star india did indicate continuation of old themes and I can't think of a more successful old theme than Bidaai. I found this article in Cb forum.

50 & counting

2011 has begun with a bang on TV and the first half will prove to be an exciting one with as many as fifty new shows in the pipeline

The war of the TRPs is hotting up like never before. The battle will be fought hard on the small screen in 2011 for numero uno status as GECs are planning to come up with new concepts and dailies.
Industry watchers predict that the year will be eventful as satellite rights are set to break last years records and channels in the race to sign the biggest and brightest of stars are shelling out big bucks.
The year started on a new note with most GECs scrapping old dailies to introduce new ones. Setting the tone for the weekend slot is Star Plus with "Love U Zindagi", an adaptation of the popular film "Jab We Met". With reality shows proving to be big winners, the channel has collaborated with BBC worldwide to bring "Wife Bina Life", based on the original format titled "The Week the Women Went". The show will see 10 women from a suburban community leave their families to go on vacation, while the men take charge. Myleeta Aga of BBC Worldwide Productions India, says, "WBL is a breakthrough concept on Indian TV. It involves entire families and reflects the change in attitude towards family in our culture. "
Also in the pipeline for the weekend band is "Pyar Mein Twist" starring Manish Paul and Roshni Chopra. Sources say that the GEC has plans of bringing back Akshay Kumar again with "Masterchef India 2", later during the year. Kiran Bedi is all set for "Aap Ki Kachehri" Season 3, and Hrithik Roshan will make his debut on TV with "Dance Olympics". Also in the pipeline are "Dor" a remake of the Tamil serial "Kolangal" and "Diya Batti". A historical, Maharana Pratap is also touted to be aired soon. Also the channel is looking at almost eight shows in the noon slot.

Imagine TV too has a host of new shows in the pipeline. "Zor Ka Jhatka" anchored by Shah Rukh Khan beginning February 1 at 9pm. Also debuting on the same day will be "Pardes Mein Mila Koi Apna" at 10.30 pm. The channel is also coming up with a historical "Chandragupt Maurya" which will start airing from March. The third season of the popular and controversial "Swayamvar", will start soon, this time with actor Ratan Rajput, titled "Ratan Ka Rishta". "The scale of production will get bigger this year. Most of the shows will be shifting to HD format and content will be more realistic and experimental," says Saurabh Tewari of Imagine TV.
Keeping the social flavour intact the channel also has "Jaat Paat", "Luteri Dulhan" and three more untitled shows in the pipeline. Tewari says, "We are focussing on 15 to 24 years age group to become our first audience and later family audience joins them."
Colors started the year with the launch of two shows post "Bigg Boss" season 4 ' "Phulwa" and "Mukti Bandhan". Keeping the rural flavour intact is "Phulwa" which is loosely based on the life of Phoolan Devi. Meanwhile, "Mukti Bandhan" is an adaptation of Harkishan Mehta's Gujarati novel. There is also "Maati Ki Banno" produced by Hema Malini.
The channel has also started airing its first reality show of the year, with "Chak Dhoom Dhoom - Team Challenge". "During the auditions for "India's Got Talent", we saw a lot of teams coming and performing group dances. Since we already had a dance brand "Chak Dhoom Dhoom", we decided to provide a platform for all these dancing groups and came up with a new season with a new look and a great new panel of judges," says Ashvini Yardi of Colors. The GEC also has "Jeena Saath Saath", "Kudesan", "Vidhwa" and a youth-based show for the first half of 2010.
With "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa" on firm footing, Sony TV had launched "Maa Exchange" and is coming with a crop of new shows to be produced by Yash Raj, like "Khhote Sikkey" among others. Meanwhile Amitabh Bachchan has given his nod to host a new season of "Kaun Banega Crorepati" for the channel and Salman will lend his dum to a new season of "Dus Ka Dum". ZEE TV is coming back with the second season of the popular show "Chhoti Bahu". It also plans to air a Gujarati historical show, "Jai Somnath" and another historical on the life of Gautam Buddha. Adding a little spice to the programming will be "Sanskaar Lakshmi", "Mr. and Mrs. Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuen" and another untitled venture.
Industry watchers say that the race to launch new shows is because channels plan to tap new audiences. The target age group this year is 15 to 25, with fresh ideas and more reality shows in the pipeline. The advent of HD has also prompted a lot of the channels to go on an overdrive. With almost 50 shows tentatively set to air in the first half, the idiot box is set to sizzle.

Great Rekha ,...

Lets see how all fair
My only concern is which top shows will be axed to fit these new ones...

Will they repeat what they did with bidaii ... I hope so !!
SP  should get a taste of  something injustice they did with bidaaii and the post leaping being interesting with Angini story just picking up...

CB2 will be a take to know how  well they do and  then umeed pay duniya kayam hai !!

I thinkits  tme and patience we have to wait and see when they can get B2 back with Angini story !!

Frankly we have already lost what we wanted to watch, so I don't really care which goes now.

new line-up of weekday fiction in March end

Wonder whether this implies the prime slot from 7:00 to 11:00 pm, now Starplus is free to axe all old shows running for more than a year to end on a high. I really want them to do that and say again why not leave fond memories in the minds of the audience and bring in new concepts.
