'My husband got me interested in cooking'

Madhuri Dixit
Madhuri Dixit rarely has a bad day on the dance reality show Jhalak Dhhikla Jaa. The stunning actress and her gorgeous saris have enhanced the show, and made it one of the more popular shows on TV.

And Mads knows we can't get enough of her, so she has teamed up with chef Sanjeev Kapoor in his new channel Sanjeev Kapoor Food Channel.

The actress talks to Rajul Hegde about her successful television innings, her family back home, and much more.

There are reports that you have already been signed for the next season of Jhalak.

Talks are on for the next season. I will let you know once I decide to do it.

'We expect the unexpected'

Govinda, Madhuri and Krushna Abhishek
How has been your Jhalak experience so far?

Well, it's been a wonderful journey. Now I know the contestants' strengths and weaknesses, so am able to guide them accordingly. We really feel bad when contestants get evicted but we can't do much about it because that is the show's format. But all of us have thoroughly enjoyed being on the show.

Which contestant has surprised you the most?

Mahi Vij and Meiyan Chang. They have grown tremendously from being non-dancers to dancers. It's wonderful to see them progress.

Which has been your favourite performance on the show so far?

There are many of them. But the one I really liked was the lavani by Krushna Abhishek. It's very difficult for a man to dance in a woman's costume but he danced with so much sincerity. He didn't copy a woman, but danced like one.

Sometimes good dancers get evicted due to public voting. What's your take on that?

People have their own opinions and favourites because of the celebrity's popularity. The show's format is such that the results are unpredictable. We expect the unexpected, so we are prepared for it.

'Hrithik dances like poetry'

Malaika Arora Khan and Madhuri Dixit
How does it feel when people idolise you?

It feels really nice that people appreciate your work. But there is a huge responsibility when you are considered as an icon because you have to act responsibly.

Most of the young actresses are in awe of you. So who is Madhuri in awe of?

(Laughs) I am in awe of (dance maestro) Briju Maharaj. There are many good Kathak dancers but since I know him and his work, I feel he is the ultimate.

In the film industry, I am in awe of Vyjayanthimalaji, Waheeda Rehmanji and Helenji for their styles of dancing.

What about male actors?

Earlier, men had more style than dancing (skills). I like Shammi Kapoor's style. Rishi Kapoor is one dancer, who would not miss even a single beat in qawwali. His qawwalis were very good.

In the current lot, it has to be Hritik Roshan. He dances beautifully -- like poetry.

'My kids have kind of realised that I am a known person in India'

Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit performing at the Filmfare awards
How was it to give a stage performance with Shah Rukh Khan at the Filmfare awards after a gap of so many years?

I really enjoyed working with him after so long. This was my first ever stage performance with Shah Rukh.

How did you children react after watching you on television?

They were like, 'Oh mama you are on TV'. They had fun on the sets and have kind of realised that I am a known person in India. They do watch Hindi films and have liked my films too. My children like music and dance but there's no special inclination to either. These things get easily noticed among girls because they dance in front of the mirror. But it's difficult with boys.

'My husband and I love to eat different types of cuisines'

Madhuri Dixit and Sanjeev Kapoor
You are the brand ambassador for the Sanjeev Kapoor Food Channel.

Yes. I was thrilled because my husband and I love to eat different types of cuisines. My husband is a good cook and he got me interested in cooking. We make our favourite recepies and invite friends.

We watch food channels sometimes and my kids love them. Sometimes they give me ideas what to add and what not.

Name one dish that you can cook really well.

Chicken Tikka Masala.

'I want to do a complete entertainer'

Madhuri's family: Husband Sriram Nene with sons Arin and Ryan, and her parents
Are you doing any films?

I want to do a complete entertainer or a film that sends out a strong message. I have been going through a lot of scripts, but nothing has been finalised yet.

The World Cup is around the corner. Which cricketer are you rooting for?

My favourite used to be Sunil Gavaskar. Now, it is Sachin Tendulkar.

'Nothing is impossible to achieve' - Madhuri Dixit

She is undoubtedly the most prized possession of this season's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa on Sony Entertainment Television.. We are speaking of the ever-smiling Madhuri Dixit Nene whose graceful presence in the show has simply done wonders to not only the contestants, but also the viewers..

Here we have Madhuri Dixit, speaking about her journey in the show..

How is Madhuri different from the initial days of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and today?
Today I am more confident in the show as I know the contestants very well and can gauge  their weaknesses and strengths. I am more attached to the show, and feel bad and shocked at every unexpected elimination. But it's been a very nice journey so far and it is going to be a tough job to judge from now on.

Do you think the dance element in a performance should include a lot of lifts and dips?
When you are doing styles like Jive and Samba, which are the Latin American dance styles, the gymnastics elements are meant to be there because that is the style of dance. And in those styles there is a Ballet element which demands aerobics also. But at the same time we have also brought in Indian Folk as well.

What do you foresee in a dancer?
The foremost is the personality he brings on, along with the movements he masters and the amount of confidence he has. Simultaneously expressions too are very important because one can dance with only the face. So unless and until you dance with your face, the interest level does not get retained.

Your favourite performance till date?
There have been a lot of beautiful performances, but one performance that's still afresh in my mind is the Lavani performance by Krushna. I can tell you that he had performed with complete sincerity, without making it feel like a jest. He danced like how a girl dances.

A thought that you discovered in this journey of Jhalak?
Nothing is impossible for anyone to achieve. When you put your mind to it, anything is possible and I always trusted that nobody is a non dancer and everybody has the rhythm and the sense of dance in them. But the inhibitions come as we grow up.

Have you as a judge ever got bothered that a non dancer is dancing?
No, because I know how hard they work every day to make their performance better.  I understand that very well as I too would have to put in a lot of hard work to learn any other form of dance, after being a Kathak dancer.  I cannot be impatient with them, in fact I can guide them.

In the press conference you had said that you actually went to LA to see Dancing with the Stars, the real version, to get convinced for the show. Are you happy with Jhalak till date?
I am absolutely happy with the show and I think the contestants are very good this year where some of them grew and some of them improved in their goodness of talent.

How are the differences of opinion among the judges sorted out?
I agree that each of us has differences of opinions, but it doesn't mean the discussion turns bad. Opinions are based on what we feel and according to that we give them the marks as well.

Has there been any elimination that you felt was unjust?
Frankly speaking, I feel all eliminations were unjust but at the same time we know that it is a competition and somebody has to get eliminated at the end of the day. Even if we feel sad about it, it is the format and you cannot cross that.

Would you like to be part of the next season?
Nothing is decided as of now..

OLD ARTICLE -

I wanted a dozen kids: Madhuri

Most would aspire to win an award like Padma Shri when they grow up. Madhuri Dixit Nene wanted none of it. She only wanted to have kids when she was older – and 12 of them! Says the actress who received the fourth highest civilian award in India, "I have never aspired for awards.

I have seen people rallying for awards but I have never been a part of this politics. But my husband is very proud of me. When I got the letter from India, he asked me what is Padma Shri. When I explained the honour, he was so awed!"
Madhuri goes on to reveal that as a kid, she had an absolutely different list of must-dos. "Even as a kid, I talked of growing up and having kids as I love children. I used to tell my mother that I want to have 12 kids. But after two, I just gave up the idea," she laughs. Mother of five-year-old Arin and three-year-old Ryan, the actress says her kids make her feel beautiful. "When I was carrying Arin, I was nervous, apprehensive and very happy. But the first time I held him in my arms, it all felt so worth it."

And how do they take to their mommy's return to films and her work? "Some time back, when we had gone to Siddhivinayak Temple, I thought both my sons would be scared of the shutterbugs. But they loved the importance they got! You should have seen them pose," she laughs. "Whenever Arin saw action and sad stuff in a movie, he would ask me, 'why did that man kill that lady, she was nice?' I would tell him that it is all pretence. This is not for real. So when he got to know that I am an actress by profession, he asked me, 'are you my real mother?' I laughed for a while and said, 'yes I am your real mother!'" LOL

Known for her million dollar smile, actor Madhuri Dixit has mesmerised many with her impeccable dance moves and power-packed performances. But Dixit's US-brought up kids grasped themagnitude of their mother's Bollywood connection only after they landed on the sets of the dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa.

Dixit, now settled in Denver, with her husband Dr. Sriram Nene and two sons Arin, 7, and Rayaan, 5, says she misses her family a lot, "I do talk to them over Facetime, iTalk etc. Though technology has made it somewhat easier, it can never have that personalised touch. I miss him (husband) and I miss giving my kids a hug before going to bed."

The actor, now back in the industry after a considerable hiatus, is happy judging a reality show at the moment. "They (the show's producers) have been chasing me for the last two years. Before taking a decision, they asked me to watch Dancing with the Stars in LA. I watched it and it convinced me to be part of the show. So here I am," she smiles.

Madhuri's kids were not aware of their mom's fanfare in India. She says, "My kids are young and not aware of how much I am loved in India. They do watch Hindi films and have loved Welcome, Munnabhai MBBS, Robot and so on. My elder son Arin used to love singing Himesh Reshammiya's songs when he was only two. And yes, they love watching my films too."

So, how does it feel to be considered an icon? "It feels really nice that people love you so much and appreciate your work. It's always good to get compliments. It makes your face glow," she says flashing that evergreen smile.

There were reports that she'd be doing Anil Kapoor's Freaky Friday. "I have seen the filmand don't think I fit into it well as of now. I am yet to discuss it with Anil (Kapoor)," Madhuri clarifies, adding, "I want to do films, which I feel will be loved by the audience. It has to be either a complete entertainer or a film like Mrityudand, which gives out a strong message. It has to be different and interesting. I have been going through a lot of scripts, but nothing has been finalised as yet," the actor signs off.

Aww...my poor Baby is missing her Hubby n Kids so much!!CryCry They must be missing her like crazy tooOuch...i agree with MadhuriClapClapClapClap...no matter how far we go with technology, nothing beats personal touch when it comes to people n relationships!!Smile Absolutely Gorgeous pic there of the Diva!!EmbarrassedEmbarrassed..Thanks for sharing!Wink
