10 Albums to watch out for in 2011

By Joginder Tuteja, January 8, 2011 - 16:16 IST

BollywoodHungama

Whatever be the fate of Bollywood films year after year, there is always something consistent about the world of films and that happens to be it's music. 2010 saw a few good soundtracks ending up making a quick impression though in 2011, one hopes that there are far better albums with a long lasting appeal. While Vishal-Shekhar had the maximum number of major soundtracks to their credit last year, Pritam is expected to bound back with quite a few major albums. As for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, there is a lot for them to offer as well. Joginder Tuteja brings to you the 10 most anticipated albums of 2011 (in alphabetical order) that are expected to see an all around popularity in months to come.

7 Khoon Maaf (Vishal Bhardwaj)

When it comes to a Vishal Bhardwaj film, one can well expect the music to belong to the kind which is different from the routine. Of course when the film boasts of a terrific star-cast as well, the expectations turn out to be even bigger. This is what makes 7 Khoon Maaf a keenly awaited album as it gets ready to hit the stands in a few days from now. Surreal could well be the word to describe the feel of this soundtrack which has already made a quick impression via the theatrical promo. As is obvious, it was just a teaser and it is pretty obvious that there is a lot more that Vishal Bhardwaj would have to offer.

Bodyguard (Pritam)

Though Sajid-Wajid are hot favourites for Salman Khan (Dabangg, Veer and Wanted to name a few), there are change in plans for his family's home production Bodyguard. This time around the man entrusted to do the job is Pritam. One can well expect that for this Salman Khan-Kareena Kapoor film, Pritam would be super excited. Reason being that he has always had a soft corner for Kareena when it comes to composing for her films. Also with Salman Khan coming into fray, Pritam would have an added responsibility of creating something totally 'dhin-chak'.

Don 2 (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)

The New Year party gone by had 'Aaj Ki Raat' playing at the strike of 12 in at least half the discotheques of the country. This was the magic of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy created soundtrack for Don which has seen a long life for itself courtesy 'Aaj Ki Raat' and the title song. Of course the entire album wasn't lapped up by the masses but one can well expect the trio to make amends with the sequel which promises to be bigger and better. A team which has continued to deliver for a decade now, Farhan Akhtar along with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy should give their listeners a lot more to cheer this time around.

Heer and Ranjha (Pritam)

Heer And Ranjha is special as it is a young film with Shahid Kapoor in the lead, someone who has been a part of many a musicals. Also the producer at the helm of affairs is Sajid Nadiadwala who has always been known for his keen interest in music of his films, as evidenced in Anjaana Anjaani last year. Bring on Pritam as the man to do the job and one can be rest assured that there would be something young, contemporary, urban and ear pleasing in the offing. Pritam's songs for Shahid's Kismat Konnection ('Tu Hai Meri Soniye', 'Move Your Body Now') play till date. It shouldn't be any different for Heer And Ranjha.

Mausam (Pritam)

A film on which Shahid Kapoor has invested his maximum time and energy in a career that has lasted for close to a decade; Mausam is extra special for the actor as he also gets directed under the baton of his dad Pankaj Kapoor. No wonder the project becomes extra special and so does its music. While one is aware about the sensibilities of Shahid when it comes to music of his films, one keenly awaits how Pankaj Kapoor gets a soundtrack in place for his debut directorial venture. One thing is for sure - it would be different from the routine and would be keenly observed on its release.

Murder 2

'Return of the brand' - That's the way one looks at Murder 2 which continues the stint that Emraan Hashmi and Bhatts have enjoyed over the years. Unfortunately for them the music of Crook as well as Tum Mile didn't quite gather much steam. However if one looks at other half a dozen odd films that they have done together before, the music has always topped the charts. Though Bhatt's haven't yet announced the name of the music composer who'll helm the responsibility of Murder, the sequel too is expected to be very strong in the music department. Get ready for some more seductive pieces a la 'Bheege Honth Tere'.

Ra. One (Vishal-Shekhar)

This Diwali, Ra. One is pretty much an event for which the countdown has already begun. Vishal and Shekhar have been known for their consistency and their penchant for doing only big and quality projects is helping them build a unique branding for them. With Shah Rukh Khan, they have made Om Shanti Om while with director Anubhav Sinha they have some rocking tracks in Dus and much ignored Cash to their credit. Ra. One is just the kind of assignment that could redefine the musical scene as the second decade of the new millennium begins.

Ready (Pritam)

Yet another major album for Pritam this year, Ready would be his first biggie of 2011. With Anees Bazmee he has done wonders in Singh Is Kinng before, a film where he was the sole composer. On the other hand, when he was one of the many composers in the film maker's next No Problem, he wasn't quite at his inspired best. One can expect him to do wonders though this time around as he is the only composer in Ready, a Salman Khan starrer. Add to that the fact that Ready is produced by a company (T-Series) known for it's monopoly when it comes to music acquisition and sales and one can well expect a major winner here.

Rockstar (A.R. Rahman)

For his last couple of films (Love Aaj Kal, Jab We Met), director Imtiaz Ali enjoyed quite a few terrific songs to his credit, courtesy Pritam. However, for Rockstar he has gone to A.R. Rahman. There is a history behind this association though. Years ago Imtiaz was supposed to kick start Rockstar with John Abraham and had hired the services of Rahman. Though the film couldn't take off then, now it has with Ranbir Kapoor as the leading man. One waits to see how further ahead has Rahman improvised in the years gone by to create a sound that goes well with the generation of the new decade. The music would also be looked at keenly since Rahman had a bad year in 2010 with none of his albums (Raavan, Jhootha Hi Sahi, Robot) doing well at the stands.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)

For a film which sees the coming together of diverse actors like Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar, the music has to be the kind that compliments this diversity. Add to that the zany narrative style of Zoya Akhtar (as evidenced in Luck By Chance) and one can well afford to have some good expectations from the soundtrack. Since the film is about youngsters and friends out there on a journey together, it won't be wrong to believe that we may well have a Dil Chahta Hai revisited after exactly a decade.
