I feel it's okay to like the western forms more than the Indian forms as long as the preference does not stem from the belief that the western form is somehow 'better' or 'superior'. I've learnt both kathak and jazz and feel that they're both equally challenging and interesting. having said that, I do agree that an Indian classical base does prove to be helpful while learning any other dance form.

'western dance' is just a part of the package deal that we have absorbed from the west. the problem is that the current generation doesn't want to 'learn' the western values, it wants to 'ape' or 'mimic' them. there is a very thin line and unfortunately we are on the wrong side of it. however, I don't believe that an art should be endorsed simply because it originates from that place. we can trump the west at the own dance and so can they. a lot of foreigners learn the Indian classical dance and a lot of Indian learns the western dances. but like I said, the preference should not stem from prejudicial beliefs.

I'd definitely like to see some Indian dances in films, provided that they're actually 'Indian' dances and not some cheap item numbers LOL

yeah, it is going to get worse! For me I like original Indian dances and songs better..

love that song of Aish.. Sigh* really miss those days.. we don't get to see this now :( India culture is so magical it is sad to westernize it ! I think it's okay to modernize tho! it is just bad to lose a culture!

I think nowadays very few actresses are trained classical dancers...I mean other than Deepika...I don't think anyone else is! Classical dancing can't be done by everyone....it takes a lot of practice and training, but there's so many gestures and a certain kind of posture! When doing hip hopor latin dances...the focus on shift to others and the lead can stand in the center and sway a little here....shake some tail feather there...close up...close up..cut and scene and done! But in classical the focus needs to be on the lead and there can't be a lot of substitution for it...plus leading actresses nowadays don't have time to learn complex, intricate dances!!

But I agree....everyone wants everything done quick and fast!

100% agree!!! I'll learned Bhartnatyam, tap, and ballet and all are equally difficult....plus the steps, posture, and gestures are so different!!!

But I think ppl find western more "cool" and exciting, but for me traditional Indian dances are just as interesting, but the taste of the newer generation is changing!

Def agree with the last statement...the last traditional dance I saw that mesmerized me was  probably "Dola re"....so beautiful, graceful, interesting, and so up beat!! Loved it and I hope we can get more of that kind of dancing back!
