I continue, with the fond hope, that better days may be ahead.   As you may know, we see only the faces of actors and actresses, in front of us, who have done good work in the past episodes, but there are many others behind the scenes, like production team, creative team, set designers, back ground musicians, director/directors, and other sundry guys.  If this is a floating population, which is common in modern corporate scenario, then that definitely affects the final outcome of the work.  We are never given the information regarding these people, and what goes on there.  We heard once, that there was a strike, of the film workers, and there was a stand off sometime back.  So if we have some investigators in he India Forums, it would help.

The men call Jugnu and ask if he has found a suitable girl for Mohan, and he says, that he has, and he arranges to meet them with the girl.

Jugnu, informs Vrinda, that it is the same family, but she will be interviewed this time, by the men.  To be on her best behavior and do her acting well.

The women are in a disarray, and Manjula who has had many avatars in her life in the Nanavati house, from the time when Mohan and Bhakti were married, and she plotted to undermine them, and did so many bad things.   She must have had a change, after Bhakti died, and then her mother in law too passed away.   She had a new transformation of character when Maasi, and Raj were present, and then she took  upon the avatar of Sherlock Holmes    After the arrest of Maasi and her family,  she has continued in the same form, even though her decisions are harebrained, and out of gear.   She is the dominant woman, among the daughters in law, and all the others play second fiddle to her, because of deference to her age and seniority.

Under Manjula's leadership, they interview girls for the job, but are frustrated that they do not find any one to suit Manjula's vision and plan.   Others do not know what she wants.

The men interview and explain to Vrinda and settle to choose her as the person to do the job.  She is told what is expected of her, and after giving a cheque for the job, as advance payment, they go.   On the way, Jugnu and Vrinda stop over a Mandir, and ask God's intervention.   Vrinda is sincere.  Finally she takes the cheque which Jugnu gives her and goes on her bike, to the Bank to deposit the same.

On the way, Dev and Ashta too are going to deposit their money in the bank.   Dev hands over the money to Ashta and goes to bring his bike, but two loafers see the girl counting her money, think of snatching her bag, when she has put her money in it.  They indeed snatch it, and run away, and Ashta chases them and behind her Dev runs.

On the way, Vrinda sees this and also chases them, stops and beats them up, and chases them away, and hands over the bag to Ashta.  She is grateful to this lady, whom she has not met before.  Thanks her and she offers her hand in friendship, and tells her about Dev.  Vrinda takes them to be husband and wife, and when Ashta tells her that they are friends, Vrinda tells her that they look like Radha and Krishna.   She is impatient to tell her family about this girl, whom she compares to Jhansi ki Rani.

At home the women are gloomily waiting for the men to come.  The men, have already brought Vrinda with them, but they go ahead to tell the women, that Mohan has chosen a woman to marry.   They want to know who she is.   Mohan goes to bring her, and when Manjula sees her she wants to send her away, but Ashta comes running, wanting to tell them about the woman she met, and sees Vrinda there,  and says, "Hello Dost" and the women are astonished.

Vrinda gets accepted as Ashta comes in and tells all of them that she is her new friend, and extracts a promise from her that whe will stay till she comes back from purchasing sweets.

Manjula the leader of the women, demands from the men, to abdicate their right to choose a wife for Mohan, and she compares it to their right to manage their business without the interference of the women.   She tells them, that choosing a wife for Mohan, is the right of Manjula and the other women, and they do not dare to defy her, whether out of decency, or docility, or any other reason is not indicated, but they just meekly walk off with their heads bowed down !

The women then have a meeting with Vrinda, not knowing her character and nature.  She allows them to go on talking and threatening, and advising what she can do and what she can not.   It is so demeaning for the women, as well as for Vrinda, who quietly listens to them and allows them enough leeway, to implicate themselves.   Then the great hero of the women, Manjula gives a contract, - for Vrinda to sign.   Vrinda puts her case but the women do not seem to understand.   She finally gives them a piece of her mind, and throws the contract aside, and walks off.

Outside, she meets Ashta, who is all excited that Vrinda is going to stay with them.   She tells the women, that they do not have to worry about her any more, her new mother will take care of her, and she again extracts a promise from Vrinda to stay with her, and she accepts her request, to the dismay of the women.

In the Nanavati household, Vrinda and Ashta show friendship to each other, and this annoys the grumpy Manjula and her other helpers.    They want to pursue their plan, and they have sent the men back to their rooms, and in the midst of 21st century luxury and use of modern tools, their minds are locked up in the middle ages, and it appears an anachronism.

What I see, is a tug of war between the obstinate women, bent on preserving the status quo, and getting Ashta off her trip, to get her father married.   No psychiatrists, or psychologist would have approved of their method, but why will they consult them if their minds are locked up in the time wrap of the middle ages?

I have a guess, that the aim of the writer is to bring out the victory of good over evil, and make Vrinda overcome all the obstacles, and really get married to Mohan.    He expects to show us a dramatic conflict of character between the protagonists, and we shall wait for the same.

Vrinda is made to look like a fool, as the dish has been doctored by the women, with extra chilly powder, a common trick on the sets.   The scene ends by Ashta's mild solution, and Vrinda comes out of it.

In the night, Ashta insists on Vrinda to tell her a story, and falls asleep in her room, and the overpowering Manjula goes in search of her beloved protege, and finds her in Vrinda's room.  As she tries to wake her up, she is shown with the raised palm of her stiff hand of Manjula, telling her  to leave her alone.

Manjula goes to her room, and can not get sleep, and as time goes on, it is not apparent, whether it is her dream or real, she finds Ashta sleeping on her.

Vrinda can not get rid of Ashta, and she can not have enough of Vrinda, to the chagrin of the old 'mothers' led by Manjula the tigress.

The episode starts with the women discovering letters inviting them for a party at six in the evening, and they speculate that the men might have planted them.

The men too have received these letters, and they too think it is the game of the women.

Then all get together and suspect one another, and while Manjula shows her spiteful face with her pallav draped on her head, the other women, the simpletons, hovering round their Badi Bhabi, simply follow the line shown by her.

Jalpa finds that Vrinda and Ashta are not to be found in the house, and their suspicions are aroused, and each one rattles their own answers, and ponder a fitting reply.

Ashta comes home, with bags, and Dav and Vrinda on her side, and wish Jalpa a happy birthday.   Suddenly it dawns on her that she has forgotten her own birthday.

As the sweet girl Ashta is all excited with her plan, and Dev too joins her in her joy, the rest have to pretend they they too are happy.  Manjula's wry face creases a little to show some lines around her cheeks and a smile appears even if unwillingly.   Jalpa in her madness shows her happiness without restraint, and the others show the same with reserve.  The men have no hesitation, as they never could think like Manjula, a stranger married into the mild mannered Nanavati home.

Ashta comes with games and music, and she is bent on getting her father and her Vrinda Ma, together, which bruises the ego of Manjula.    Simplicity, and Innocence prevails and all join in the party, and the mood softens as time goes on.

Dev tells Ashta that no marriage can be arranged for her father and her Vrinda Ma, for another fifteen days, as there is no auspicious day, as told to him, by the famous Manjula.  They have swallowed her story but Ashta happens to read a loose page of a news paper where it is mentioned that one of the greatest auspicious days is coming after two days, on which day, many marriages will be performed, and they will receive such blessings, that will last them through their life time.   This angers Ashta.

She turns to the women, and asks them sternly, why they had to lie to her, and they all look down shame faced.   Ashta has got a big stick, by which she might hit her antagonists, and get her father married to this Vrinda Ma, who is genuinely a good natured woman, and will defend her though out her life.

In this episode, the men and women of the Nanavati family, plan how to overcome the obstinacy of Ashta, the immature daughter of Mohan and Bhakti Nanavati.

Ashta argues with her elders and asks them, why they did not tell her the truth regarding the auspicious day, earlier.   Manjula Nanavati, the eldest daughter in law, of the family, gives an evasive answer, which does not satisfy her niece.

They advise her that to get married, other things, besides the auspicious day are needed, like the horoscopes too have to match, and that only a pandit qualified for the job, can do it.  Ashta asks her aunts to get a pandit tomorrow and finalize the wedding as only two days are left, before the greatest auspicious day in the Calendar.

Aunt Manjula calls Jugnu, who is their obliging partner in the charade, and tells him to do the Pandit act, and they offer him  money for the job.   They demand that he tell them that the wedding can not go on, as the kundalis (horoscopes) do not match, and if they get married, there will be constant fighting between husband and wife.   The women feel that they have won the battle in taming their niece, who may still outwit them with the divine help of her trusted Laddoo Gopal.

Next day, the Pandit comes, and Ashta is anxious to find out the result.   The whole family gathers round the Pandit in the spacious lobby of their palatial residence called the Nanavati Home, but he, the pseudo pandit, has already been bribed by Dev, Ashta's partner in her business, to give a positive answer, and also has given him more money than the aunts.   Jugnu, the turncoat, in the pandit;s attire, pretends that he is studying the horoscopes, and after performing a series of antics, comes out with a positive answer, and Ashta says, her Laddo Gopal showed them the way.  She is overjoyed, to the dismay of Manjula and her cohorts.   The cohorts, do so just to please the Great Aunt, whom they want to be in good books with.    The husbands are meekly submitting themselves to the dictates of their wives, and admit that their acumen is not as great as their wives.   However, Mukesh the elder brother snubs Manjula, his wife, saying that in spite of calling herself smart, she has again failed, and she smarts under his insult and is more determined than ever, to win this battle of wits.

Manjula then secretly rings her house telephone with her pre-set  mobile hidden in her saree, and as the telephone starts to ring, she lifts the hand set of the land line, and talks and sobs and tells them their Rajkot aunt has passed away of a heart attack, and this means, that for the next 13 days they can not have the marriage, and Ashta is bewildered and sad and resigned to their wishes.

Hardly Ashta goes out, she sees this Rajkot aunt who looks younger than her niece Manjula, (quite possible, if her parents were much older than the aunt) coming into the house, and shouts with joy to the others, that the Rajkot Aunt has not died, but  she is here and someone must have made a prank call, to mislead them.  Manjula is dumbstruck, at what has turned out, to be one more failure on her side.   It never strikes her that she may be on the wrong side of destiny.    Ashta with her deep faith in Laddoo Gopal, tells them that there is going to be a wedding anyway, and since Manjula did not inform her aunt before, the Rajkot Aunt is angry and she upbraids Manjula and all the rest of the older people, and walks away from the house, saying "I came here from a pilgrimage to offer prasad, and have landed in the wrong place, which does not deserve it".   Manjula tries to explain, but her Aunt is more adamant than her niece, the haggardly old Manjula, who struts around thinking she has all the answers to all the problems that beset the family.   She makes poojas, but her faith is not as strong as Ashta's in spite of her being not fully developed.

Then, Ashta, who comes out as the true heroine,  tells them, that since the aunt has left, there should be no problem for the wedding, but Mohan then has a fit, and walks away saying, that he can not marry.   He goes up to  his room.   Ashta follows him to the bedroom, and sees him in front of Bhakti's photo, and she sits in front of him on the bed and asks why he is angry with her.   Mohan mellows at the sight of his innocent child, and tells her that it is her Bhakti Ma's death anniversary, and when Ashta asks him, if he would marry after that, he yields to his child and says that he will marry after that.   Ashta is prepared to wait.

The women pounce on Vrinda, and tell her she has to act the negative role for the next thirteen days, and she agrees.Edited by walquest2000 - 13 years ago

Manjula has ordered Vrinda to perform her acting and her aim is to dissuade Ashta from wanting Vrinda as the wife to her father, and a mother to herself.

Vrinda does her part, and it has no effect on Ashta, who always thinks of a reason why Vrinda may be doing this.   When Vrinda scolds Ashta for not having bath, before performing pooja, and then come for the breakfast, she also gives a whipping to the aunts for bringing  her up so badly, and the barb and taunt hurts them, but they do not show.

They next show, the women, wash the dirty clothes, and Vrinda supervises, to the satisfaction of Manjula and Parul, but to the dismay of those who had to do the washing.    Later Manjula comes for a check up and tells Vrinda to rest.

In the meantime, Dev, acts as a positive mediator, and makes Ashta to obey the wishes of Vrinda, and she decides to do as she tells, and that goes against the plan of the Aunts.

Next they all wait for their meals, but Vrinda is sleeping ,and Ashta goes to wake her up, but finding her asleep, she goes and prepares the food, without the Aunts knowing it.    Later Vrinda comes down, and sits of the Sofa, and gives orders to the Aunts, and they feel smarted with her taunts.   Ashta does not understand, and Manjula thinks that Vrinda is doing her part well.   The women complain that the food is not ready, and Vrinda blames them, saying they are good for nothing, and do not know to do anything on their own.   When Manjula is confused, and does not understand what Vrinda is driving at, Ashta comes out and says, she is getting some nice smell from the kitchen, and they rush to find out, that the food is ready, and again cold water is poured over Manjula's proud head.

We expect a triangular battle, between Vrinda, and Manjula, as Ashta toppling the plans each time.   Let us see what they have more in store for us.
