I am a Muslim girl who doesn't cover her head and for some reason people who do talk to me and get to know me are always surprised that I'm somewhat "religious". For some reason the fact that I don't cover my head makes me a heathen. And its not just the Muslim community that I'm referring to - even others that are not Muslim automatically assume that I'm a "liberal" Muslim and far from religion. Whatever, I guess.

A friend of mine faces the same problem. She doesn't wear a scarf and neither does she do all 5 prayers on time but that's because she's not comfortable with using the uni's praying facilities and she much rather go home and complete her 5 prayers. There's a name for it I believe, but I've forgotten.
Although she doesn't wear the scarf, she is one of the most religious Muslims I know. She does however always get asked why she doesn't wear a scarf and 'does that mean you're not a good Muslim?'. Stupid questions like that. In college there were a group of girls, who labelled themselves the 'scarfies' and they'd get up to all sorts of things and rarely ever prayed 5 times a day. Not to say that all girls who wear the scarf are like that, because they definitely aren't but as I already mentioned..it's not what's on the outside that matters. There are girls who wear scarves at college and then when they meet their BF they remove them and there are others who wear short skirts and what not but may actually be quite religious, or maybe they are trying to be more religious so we are no-one to judge them. All I can say is..looks can be deceiving.

Exactly ... there's no lack of hypocrites in this world. Wearing a scarf doesn't make you religious, just like not wearing a scarf doesn't make you not religious. As you said, looks can be deceiving.

There's a Pakistani movie that came out a few years ago called Khuda Ke Liye - its an excellent movie directed at misconceptions against Pakistanis and more particularly Muslims and the challenges that the youth face in Pakistan and outside of it. Naseeruddin Shah plays a Muslim priest in the movie and there's an eye opening dialogue sequence where he says that the Muslim youth think that to be religious means to look religious. When they come towards religion, they immediately try to look religious by trying to imitate Prophet Mohammad's appearance. Muslim boys take upon beards to prove how religious they are. But he says that that's not religion. To want to look like the prophet you admire should be iss junoon ki aakhri hadh. You should change yourself from the inside - to be like the person you admire from the inside, to be a good person, and in the end, once you've achieved that, you can go on to appear from the outside what you think a religious person should look like.

Sorry, stretched it out a bit too much, but I thought it was worth sharing.

This is a bit random but I had to get it off my chest. I hate how we girls get so dressed up for garba/dandia and then so many guys just come in wearing a superman t-shirt and jeans! Grr! Another thing that I hate? When people come to temple for the sole purpose of socialising with boys..very annoying!

I hate dressing up, I love my jeans and tees. Moreover, even the traditional attire for men is light weight. At weddings our dresses and jewelry may look pretty - but they make you hot, and uncomfortable and even itchy at times.LOL

And Ugh! I know!!! Sometimes it seems like all desi get togethers are some sort of dating convention. Why?? Confused

Seeing as you mentioned churches, I honestly never realised this was such an issue in churches. At the end of the day, the exterior shouldn't matter..it's what's on the inside that makes a difference.

I was unaware of it too, but some churches are very strict. You have to wear your Sunday best, that usually means dress very formally and conservatively. They frown on boys with long hair, girls with short hair, piercings, tattoos, ripped jeans etc. I've known quite a few people who chose to be atheist, irreligious or non denominational solely because they found churches to be too judgmental and preachy. They could not make sense why chewing gum or spiking hair made someone sinful.

Also many people from poorer families feel out of place/under-dressed in churches and feel embarrassed over not being able to make the weekly donations. That is why many new churches with new perspectives are coming up to reach out to youngsters and low income or immigrant groups

Ah that brings back so many memories! Every year we'd all line up to go in to church for Christmas/Easter Mass and I'd always pop a chewing gum in my mouth and I had one friend in particular that was a strict Catholic so if she saw me with gum in my mouth, she'd ask me to spit it out. As a kid in year 7/8..it hurt to throw out gum that I had only been chewing for about 10minutesLOL

Our school's local church was open to anyone so even during our masses, it was always open to the public. Even in general all faiths were allowed. The only issue was that if you are not Catholic then you are not allowed to receive the bread, so even if you were Methodist you either sat on your seat and didn't get up or got up for a blessing from the priest. I think the first Saturday of every month at my church is Tamil Mass. We had a lot of Catholic Tamils and Mallus from South India and Sri Lanka at school so that's why there's a special mass for them. I'd love to go one day..I've heard they have food afterwards tooTongue

Desi get togethers I could still maybe understand but holding hands with your BF at temple?! Who knows what else they get up to!

Yes, it does!

The video has a desi guy with his white girlfriend singing the song. I have a cousin who uploaded a similar video on FB where he sang this song with his white girlfriend - they both are great singers so the video reminds me of this original video. LOL

I think all followers are bound to be hypocrites becos they are divided persons, split persons. And whatsoever thy show is only on the surface, and whatsoever they really are is hidden behind. And there is a constant conflict between these two, they live two kinds of lives. Avoid this....Smile

Krishna in jeans: Head priest sacked

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow | September 19, 2006 22:23 IST

The head priest of one of India's oldest and most widely acclaimed Krishna temple Banke Bihari Mandir at Vrindavan in Mathura has been fired for attiring Lord Krishna's deity in jeans and T- shirt and donning a mobile phone in place of his favourite 'bansuri' (flute).

The rotational term of Anand Kishore Goswami was cut short by an order of a local court, where other priests of his own clan moved a petition. In view of several other pending disputes relating to the income of the temple, the judiciary had already appointed the local civil Judge as the temple's official receiver.

While the court order was issued on Monday afternoon, it was brought into effect on Tuesday when Goswami was restrained by the administration and the police from unlocking the gates of the temple. However in the absence of any replacement for Goswami, routine prayers at the temple could not be performed.

Meanwhile a large number of devotees assembled around the temple sought the administration's intervention to ensure that the temple's daily prayers were not disrupted.

This led the administration to hastily ask another member of the Goswami clan to officiate as head priest and resume prayers. The Goswami family traditionally runs the temple and its members assume the head priest's role by rotation.

Earlier, Goswami had tendered an apology for his act, in the wake of mounting pressure from local priests, Hindu organisations as well as political parties, who literally rose up in arms against what they termed as "defiling" the image of Lord Krishna. But that did not seem to impress the angry crowds.

Goswami's act of dressing up Lord Krishna in the 21st century attire - Jeans and T-Shirt ' and with a mobile phone on Saturday morning, would have gone unnoticed. But a few TV cameras captured the entire episode that lasted only about 10 - 15 minutes. And no sooner had the channels flashed the story, there was furore in Vrindavan, believed to have been the leelakshetra (playground) of Lord Krishna.

Protests were not only visible in Vrindavan, but also as far away as Varanasi, another ancient centre of Hindu pilgrimage. Shopkeepers kept their shutters down, not only in Vrindavan and Mathura, but loud protests were made in Varanasi as well. Saffron clad priests, supported by BJP activists set afire some jeans in both Vrindabvan and Varanasi

The protestors also carried placards emboldened with slogans like, Bhagwan ko Bhagwan rehno do (Let God remain God), Bhagwan ka yeh apmaan, nahin sahega Hindustan (Disrespect to God will not be tolerated by India) and Aastha ke saath mazak band karo (don't play with religious sentiments).

Not withstanding initial assertions of the chief priest that Krishna's 'new' attire should be viewed as just another 'avatar' (reincarnation) of Lord Krishna, the other priests were livid. "Dressing up Lord Krishna in jeans and T Shirt together with a mobile phone in hand was against the spirit of Sanatan Dharma; this is an attempt to desecrate Hindu religion," charged Dr Ram Narayan Dwivedi, general secretary of Uttar Pradesh Shashtrarth Samiti, a Varanasi based body of scholars and priests to discuss Hindu scriptures.

"This is a conspiracy," alleged a prominent Bharatiya Janata Party youth wing leader. "A mere apology by Goswami is not enough; he must be sacked", was the battlecry of a Vishwa Hindu Parishad activist in Mathura.

Significantly, priest Goswami saw nothing wrong in his act. "Who can deny that Lord Krishna has different forms. He is known for his 'leelas'. I don't think there was anything wrong in dressing him up in a denim outfit," the middle-aged Goswami was reported to have initially told the media in Vrindavan.

However, when he realised he would not be able to get away with the prank, he readily conceded and tendered an apology.
