Zee's Aversion to Reality

By Sudeep Jain

The past few months have not been good for investors in Zee Entertainment Enterprises.

With the company's flagship channel Zee TV losing market share to more adventurous rivals in the busy October-to-December quarter, the firm's shares have lost 6.5% in this period, underperforming the BSE 100 index by nearly 5%.

On Tuesday, the company's shares were trading 3.1% higher at 140.30 rupees ($3.11) in the early afternoon after having fallen 1.9% in the previous session.

According to TAM, a television viewership measurement agency, Zee TV has fallen to the fourth position in the Hindi general entertainment segment in the week ended Dec. 18, ranking behind Sony TV for the second straight week. But the viewership figures paint a more dismal picture than is warranted, say some analysts.

An analyst with a domestic brokerage pointed out that Zee Entertainment is no longer as dependent on Zee TV's fluctuating fortunes for revenue as it used to be.

"In the past, Zee TV used to account for half the company's revenue but now Zee has a strong bouquet of regional channels and Zee TV's share in sales has fallen to about 30%," he said.

Analysts sum up the reason for Zee's eroding viewer base in a nutshell—no big-ticket reality shows.

"Kaun Banega Crorepati 4," the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," hosted by superstar Amitabh Bachchan, is credited with boosting Sony TV's audience. Other reality shows such as Colors' "Big Boss 4," hosted by another famous actor, Salman Khan, have also managed to draw crowds of viewers.

But Zee TV favors soaps and sitcoms instead, a preference that isn't hard to explain.

"While reality TV shows grab eyeballs they don't necessarily lead to higher earnings because they are very expensive to produce, especially the ones with big celebrities," said an analyst with a Mumbai brokerage.

The next few months are expected to be tough on all the general entertainment channels, with the cricket World Cup in February expected to pull viewers to sports channels instead.

But Zee TV might well see its viewers increase after March, when many reality TV shows will no longer be airing and television dramas are likely to come back into favor.

Thanks for this article Misti.
zee tv's new shows are hovering around the number 1 as per TAM reports and not as per ZEE numbers.  Even if any new show comes up, they themselves know that to cross the barrier of 1 is going to be a Herculean task.  Added to that with the world cup cricket fever, with most of the matches scheduled to be day and night these shows are likely to take a good beating.  ZEE has already set itself up for a viable excuse for doing badly.  Meanwhile ZEE will have a list of shows that will go from bad to worse and they will be in a good position to decide what can go off air.  Maybe CB2 should come only when ZEE has no other recourse but to take the obvious decision.  They may also learn to take interest in the new show and will promote it well.
Just my thought.
