A line is a dot that went for an infinite walk in both directions. LOL

No, the head is the dot and the hands are the two new heads arising out of the fission. Big smile

Net and text speak have been very detrimental to my writing skills because texting and Internet chatting are somewhere halfway between speech and writing. Face to face conversations involve the use of gestures, facial expressions and other body language to communicate. In writing, on the other hand, words have to convey tone, punctuation and content without any other aids. But texting/IMing mix speech and writing so I use emoticons and overuse punctuation marks to try to make my writing more speech-like. Now it takes an effort to write whole sentences without constantly using dashes and smileys.

I mean - it's just wayy easier to type like this, esp on iPhone! But I don't wanna get Ito a bad habit Coz then it'll be difficult to write normally :( do other ppl face the same problem??

Ouch I am guilty of still sticking to using dashes and extending the words like "way, so, long" etc.  I have been trying my best to move away from smileys but there are times when I find myself using ":)" instead of the smiley emoticon just for the sake of effectively conveying the tone.

I weaned myself from dots between a single sentence long time ago but still stuck on dashes.  I used dots to convey pauses so that my sentence came across as if I am talking instead of writing.  It's hard to stay away from the space fillers and mood depicters when chatting or exchanging funny banters on social forums.  Thank god I do not use sms.  This has saved me from butchering the language completely.  I detest the "r u dere, b4, gr8" language (or, can I say "lingo" without beating the purpose of this post).

I think text speak has its benefits because it's quicker; I don't mind contractions like 'coz' or 'ppl'. But I do mind non phonetic contractions like 'dere' and mixing digits with letters to make 'b4'/'gr8' because they're just hard to read, as are sentences full of ellipses (....).

Texting has reduced my vocabulary as well, because the word limit on old phones disincentivised the use of long words. It didn't help that I had my old Nokia for way too long. I feel like this would be an appropriate place for me to stick a sad smiley, but I won't on principle.

Ugh....this image won't show but trust me click the link

Also read the entire blog here - http://reasoningwithvampires.tumblr.com/

How refreshing to see this when kids all around me are being taught to read phonetically and grammar is considered too boring to teach in kindergarten. Wren and Martin may have been restrictive, but by golly did they give me a good foundation in composition.

If I could warp through the computer screen and come give you a massive hug for this I would. You have no idea how refreshing it is for me to see youth who still value proper language, spelling, grammar and punctuation included. As net speak grows and 'people speak lyk dis n 4 sum reason tis fine to cum in da net lyk dis, n i dunno how dat is fine wid neone'. Amidst all that, its heartwarming to know that the beauty of language still lives. Big smile

Not if I hug you first! Thank you for posting such a wonderful link. These days grammar and spelling are seen as issues for the pedantic, whereas this blog entertainingly shows that grammar is just an extension of logic.
