I actually like Munni Badnaam Hui πŸ˜† It's a fun song, but I don't really like "Sheila Ki Jawani" that much.  I mean, times are different now, and JS and many others need to accept that. The MDs and singers are a product of the public, and if the public enjoys this, what's the harm? Anyways, I don't think it's right that he's say this is not music because it is. I would like to know what he exactly defines as "music". Music can be anything. What is music is a question that has been debated on for may years all over the world. As long as people are happy and finding enjoyment, and they're not harming anyone, it's okay. Let people be people and don't judge.

I am sorry to say that so many of the songs put out today don't really have staying power.  I love all kind of music and I don't dismiss music just because it is popular but how many recent songs are timeless, or as we say in the US, an instant classic?  I just heard O Majhi Re and if it was released today, it would be a hit.  Putting a hip hop beat and some English lyrics does not make a song an instant classic in my mind.

As for Jagjit Singh, this guy had a long streak of hits with ghazals which at the time were sort of avant garde and not ghazals in the traditional sense.  So he is someone who really did have several songs which seemed to be instant classics and really are enduring classics a generation later.

I hear a lot of new songs that are nice but I hear a lot of songs that really are forgettable and in fact will be forgotten in a decade.

Sheila ki Jawani is definitely not music....After superhit albums with Dostana, IHLS, Anjaana Anjaani, this wasn't expected from Vishal-Shekhar...

TMK probably their worst album in recent years...oh well Wallah re Wallah is a good song πŸ˜›

We need to understand one thing. Market is one thing and sustainability is another. Today's music is in general nothing new and "innovative" for an end listener to gasp it and remember for a long term. Music is commercialised and most of it is just to lure audiences into theatres and try to make the film a hit. If the film flops badly, everything including the songs are forgotten and this stands true for even the most recent films that have flopped but some songs were hummable. But for those who really appreciate what music really is, they know how well old songs and traditional indian classique and ghazal are soothing to the ears. But sadly, giving melody is a big question mark and most of today's music has heavy acoustical bass and meaningless lyrics, as said earlier, only short term hits. Most of the musical shows will still show contestents singing those old songs to strengthen their classical base because these are really tough to sing. Today's so called item songs are just...mere songs which do not require any kind of sur or tempo, just shout and scream and make people dance. But again-one comes, other goes and people do not remember who sang, rather they may remember who danced to it.

Sorry to say, today's music has become worse than ever. traditional Indian music has to come back.

It's good to hear someone speak up about it.

I won't deny that the song is annoyingly catchy but there's no real musical talent. Real music is like the songs from Pardes, DDLJ, DTPH etc.

It's illogical to mix the issues of commercialisation and quality.

πŸ˜› arey haila tum yaha.............Swagat hein..........πŸ˜› As far as music goes, it comes down to preference.......Here in the states people malign rap/hip-hop as being ghetto and not real music and yet others think Rock/roll is not real music but just noise..........People who don't like heavy metal say that's just noise and not music.........who's to say who's right and who's wrong? Jagjit's gazals weren't a big hit with everyone, many people think gazals are nothing but glorified whining........Are they wrong? who says they are wrong? Are they not allowed to have their preferences? πŸ˜›  I love gazals, but I love munni badnaam hui songs as well.........I don't understand why there has to be a choice........why can't there be all different kinds of music and people can listen to what they want.........why should any kind of music be banned or not allowed to be made? πŸ˜›

Kya karo? Itni dair aapse door nahi reh saktiπŸ˜‰πŸ˜†
No doubt everyone's choice is different when it comes to music but I don't think it takes much musical talent to sing a song like Sheila Ki Jawani in comparison to a classic like 'Nahin Hona Tha' from Pardes. That's just my opinion and I don't expect everyone to agree with me. A song like Sheila Ki Jawani will be forgotten in a couple of months whereas Nahin Hona Tha is a classic that won't be forgotten so easily. Chaiya Chaiya was also considered to be an 'item number' by Malaika Arora yet the song is so much better in every aspect compared to SKJ.

Oh and i've always thought rock music is noise. It hurts my ears. Hip-hop any day! I don't deny that there are very few songs in hip-hop that actually have good lyrics. Rap on the other hand has some great songs, and tend to be more meaningful. Just take a listen to 'Where is the love?' by Black Eyed Peas and you'll know what I mean.

How have you been Ankit? Will you be watching DID doubles?
