Critic's I-view

After the fiasco of biggies like 'Kisna', 'Elaan', 'Insan' and critically acclaimed 'Black' it's double bill of skin shows this week. This times its Preeti Jhangiani versus Neha Dhupia in sleazy acts of lust and passion. Last year saw 'Murder' and 'Julie' that set the cash register ringing, as this seems to double treat for skin show lovers. Manisha Koirala has been the cult figure of sleazy films in the past as this time she returns as alcoholic fading pop star. The "touch me not" girl Preeti Jhangiani has an image make- over as she bangs with loads of skin show. Skin shows seems to be rage as there is a line- up of dozens of such films that include 'Fun-can be dangerous', 'Maaza Maaza' and 'Classic'.

During the launch of this film it was presumed that the characters of Manisha Koirala and Preeti Jhangiani were inspired from Madonna and Britney Spears. After seeing the film this statement looks like a gimmick. After directing 'Market' director Jai Prakash once again teams up with Manisha Koirala and Aryan Vaid in this potboiler. The film is made under the banner of Chamunda Films, and Umesh Chouhan produces this film. Preeti Jhangiani is the surprise package this time as she breaks her ice-maiden image. After being launched successfully by Yash Raj Films in 'Mohabbatein' this can be her big break. Mallika Sherawat, Neha Dhupia and Meghna Naidu and now Preeti can be seen in a dare bare act of seduction on screen. She has some of the hottest and boldest scenes in the film opposite Aryan Vaid. Aryan tries to rejuvenate his career but fails miserably in this female-oriented film. Aryan has been a successful model but his acting talents need to be polished.

Manisha Koirala returns to silver screen as pop diva Mallika Arora. She is madly in love with music baron Rahul Kapoor (Aryan Vaid), who promotes her as a singing star. Rahul, multimillionaire music magnate runs a R.K.Music World. Mallika, like any celebrity, believes to live life to its extreme as she thinks that marriage kills the love between two human beings. Rahul wants to marry her but she declines for wedlock despite the fact she has physical relations with him. Mallika's king-size lifestyle takes topsy turvy turn as she faces failures in her career. Rashmi (Preeti Jhangiani) is a die-hard fan of Mallika and idolizes her. Rashm's friends suggest that she should try to have career in entertainment world. She approaches Rahul for this as she has big hopes from Rahul and his music company. Rahul's business faces financial crisis as Mallika's three consecutive albums fall flat. Rangeela (Sayaji Shinde), Rahul's assistant, suggests that he should take stern business steps as he stops Rahul for producing Mallika's next album. Rahul watches Rashmi's promotional CD as he decides to launch her as his next singing star.

Rashmi performs brilliantly in first album "Dilbar" as things become easy for Rahul. As the saying goes, Man proposes and God disposes, the music video gets thunderous applause and Rashmi becomes national celebrity overnight. Rashmi's charm and talent fascinate Rahul as he decides to marry against all odds. Rashmi too responds to his love and together they plan to marry. Rashmi's father Dr Jaitley (Govind Namdeo) opposes this marriage because of Rahul- Mallika relationship. Rahul convinces him and soon they get engaged. During an interview Mallika confesses her "deep love" for Rahul, but Rashmi and her father get infuriated as they decide to break the engagement. Rahul gets frustrated and publicly humiliates Mallika. In a heated argument he calls her "whore". This upsets Mallika to an extent that she decides to kill Rahul. Life becomes hell for Mallika as she faces the reality.

On that night under alcoholic intoxication he orders her personal bodyguard Jaidev (Sharad Kapoor) to physically eliminate Rahul. Next morning she realizes after recovering from intoxication her mistake and asks Jaidev not to harm Rahul. Jaidev being a silent admirer and obsessive lover of Mallika is desperate to kill Rahul but Mallika wants to save her lover's life. Then begins the cat and the mouse game, as things get worse for Rahul. Jaidev follows Rahul to Goa to kill him. In a tug of war Mallika kills Jaidev as she rescues Rahul from him. She finally kills herself, as she could not tolerate Rahul to be with Rashmi. This ends the tale of love, passion and lust that entangles many lives.

Manisha looks fat and aged in this film as she has made wise move to change career from acting to film direction. One really wonders how can an actress who has worked in thought- provoking films like 'Khamoshi' and 'Bombay' is accepting skin flicks? Manisha has tried hard for glam looks but fails this time. She should accept roles that suite her facade. Aryan Vaid seems to be the weakest link of the film as he fails to emote at many places. He does not have the perfect face language to deliver human emotions. He practically needs some acting lessons. Sharad Kapoor overacts in the climax as he tries to imitate Shah Rukh Khan in a role of obsessive lover. Like his previous films ('Dastak', 'Josh') he plays aggressive character that fits the character. Sayaji Shinde impresses with his comical skills as he has been at his villainous best in films like 'Calcutta Mail' and 'Shool'. Preeti Jhangiani steals the show with his skin show. She looks gorgeous but lacks in acting skills. She might take her fans to surprise with oodles of body show.

In a film that deals with glamour and music world there is some sub-standard music by Anand Raj Anand. The songs of this film can be least heard, as the producers have not given the right promotion to the film and music. Choreography is impressive in stage show songs but looks ordinary in duets. The rain song "Yeh Raat Hai" is well performed as it has been in news for the bold act. The physical scenes between Aryan and Preeti are well executed and emote sensuality. Action sequences are simply well performed at the end. Jai Prakash's direction has improvised from his last film 'Market' as he still needs some polishing. The story of the film looks ordinary as one predicts the end.

A film that has the combination of aging star and upcoming struggling star will find hard times at the box-office. The film can have mixed response. However, one thing is clear that the film is no big "nasha" for the audience.

I have no idea why Manisha keeps promoting Aryan Vaid... he looks like such a loser Confused

The writer dosn't seem to be a bonafide film critic... the review is more like a personal opinion. It's irrelevant what he/she thinx about Black!!

Seems like this is one movie to avoid tho'
