An actor by accident
Narayani Shashtri known to television addicts as Taashu from Kkusum,
became an actress by sheer accident. When she was studying law, her
dramatist friend requested her to enact a part in the absence of
another artiste. The petite law student loved the experience and
couldn't wean herself away. Narayani, who recently bagged the lead
role opposite Nana Patekar in a Marathi film, spoke to Priyanka
Kelkar about her brief appearance in Chandni Bar and working with
Nana Patekar
Matters of Kkusum
I make a comeback in Kkusum after a year long gap. Taashu's
character was resurrected when the writers exhausted the storyline
revolving around the younger
characters. They realised that the focus of the serial was moving
away from Kkusum and Abhay, and introduced Taashu in order to put
matters back on track.
Past perfect
My first break came without any struggle or conscious effort. I was
studying law and was well on my way to graduating when, in the
absence of another artiste, a friend requested me to act in a play.
It was called Gharonda. Soon some Hindi musicals followed.
A Manmohan Waris video and some commercials later, I bagged my first
television serial Yehi To Pyar Hai, thanks to the director who is
also a dear friend. Soaps like Koi Apna Sa and Kyunkii Saas Bhi
Kabhi Bahu Thi followed.
Home sweet home
For the past two years, I have been playing Rimjhim in Piya Ka Ghar
and I love the character's calm and understanding nature. She
manages to win hearts with undying love. The role is quite
challenging since it showcases various emotions like pride, love,
insecurity and affection. Thanks to all the time we spend on the
sets, the cast and crew has become one big family.
On Chandni Bar
I take up offers only if they excite me. The length of the role is
not a criteria. Though I was offered a small role in Chandni Bar, I
considered myself fortunate to be part of such a gritty film.
Working with Tabu was a lot of fun.
Role call
I don't have any role models, but I have always admired Amitabh
Bachchan, Smita Patil, Sanjeev Kumar and Kajol.
Future forward
I have just completed shooting for my first Marathi film titled Pak
Pak Pakak, in which I am paired opposite Nana Patekar. This is his
first Marathi film in 14 years. It is directed by Sai Paranjpe's son
Gautam Joglekar, who I had earlier worked with in Sanjivani. It's a
realistic film about children set against a rural backdrop. Since I
am too lazy to do any homework for my roles, it was difficult
adopting the twang of the rural Marathi dialect. But once I was in
front of the camera, playing the part was a piece of cake.
