FILM REVIEW: BLUFFMASTER (2005)
Producer: Ramesh Sippy
Director: Rohan Sippy
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and Nana Patekar
Rohan Sippy's fast-paced; slick looking, musical, con escapade is a complete entertainer. The movie stars, masters of all junior Bachchan, glamour girl Priyanka Chopra, comedy ka Ikka Ritesh Deshmukh, Doctor Boman Irani and the crook of all Nana Patekar.
In the movie, Roy Kapoor (Abhishek Bachchan) is a conman whose profession is to bluff others for money. In the first sequence of the movie itself Roy cons a film producer (Tinu Anand) with his tricks of the trade. The only thing pure and innocent in his life is Simmi (Priyanka Chopra) to whom Roy does not bluff his romance for her. But he is unable to courage himself up to tell her that he is a conman because he knows that Simmi hates lies, cheats and deceive. Anyway Roy proposes to Simmi, who accepts, and unfortunately on their engagement day Roy bump into the very man he duped in the beginning of the movie. Roy's reality is exposed in front of her entire family and Simmi is aghast when she learns the very man she loved is a cheat! Even though it gives her pain, she slips Roy's engagement ring off her finger and dumps him.
Roy who is trying to deal with his broken heart bumps into a 'chindi chor' (small time conman) Dittu, played by Ritesh Deshmukh. He tries to bluff the bluff-master Roy, thinking him to be a simple man and easily fails in his act. When he realises that Roy is superior to him in this business he asks Roy to become his 'guru'. Roy sees him as a joke to this trade but to take his mind off Simmi, he agrees to teach Dittu the rules of the game. Their partnership, act of conning and Dittu's stupidity becomes the best sequences in the movie. Dittu start relying on his partner and tells him about his past and his motto in life. Dittu's father was an honest person. But loaded hotelier and local mobster Chandru Parekh (Nana Patekar) was responsible for taking Dittu's dad to insanity and so now he wants to revenge with Chandru. Roy does not want himself in this mess and he has other things on his mind - to win back his lady love.
While Roy is trying to regain Simi's love, he comes to know a shocking truth. He has brain tumor. His doctor, Dr. Bhalerao (Boman Irani), says he has just three months left to live. Roy decides that he won't be able to live for long and so he wants to pull off one last big con on Chandru Parekh who made Dittu's father a pauper. But it's not easy to con a conman and even more a dangerous conman. Chandru is an ill-mannered, uncivilized hotelier who worships himself in the mirror with a 'puja thali' and has a liking for dialogues. His favorite time pass - just when he hears a good line, he notes it down for future use. Roy and Dittu do a lot of planning and somehow manage to dupe Chandru of his crores. But Chandru won't go down so easily. He abducts Simi and demands Roy to return his money otherwise he will kill the girl. Roy, who knows his eventual fate set out to face Chandru's gun. Here the climax that will shock many and it might come as a disappointment to some.
Everyone from Abhishek to Nana to Ritesh has given the best of their performance. Abhishek role is on the serious side for he is playing a love-lost lover. And then he becomes even more serious when he hears of his impending death. His role demanded a powerful performance and the actor have carried it off with a style. But the portions involving Boman Irani and Abhishek weren't electrifying enough and those could have been better.
Nana Patekar leaves you spellbound. We have seen the actor in a dangerous role in Apharan and here too he is shown in a negative shade but this role is different. In Apharan he was playing no nonsense, terrifying and serious Kingpin of underworld and here he was playing an uncivilized and self worshiping conman which would seriously bring smile to his viewers. Hey! Look for his dialogues.
Ritesh Deshmukh gave some real fun to the movie. He made the first half of the movie exciting. His comedy stills are improving movie by movie (Masti, Kya Kool Hai Hum). He infuses life in the narrative with his sheer presence. Priyanka Chopra has done an honest job but every time she and Abhishek share a screen space, the pace to the movie slackens and it looks boring. Boman Irani is sincere.
The music is funky and the best thing was that it helped in maintaining the pace of the movie. Most of the songs are played in reduced length. The dialogues (Rajat Aroraa and Shridhar Raghavan) in the movie are genuinely original. In terms of a screenplay Rohan Siippy has done a great job. The movie moves at a breakneck pace and doesn't give the viewer a chance to think.
Lookout for some good sequences:
- Tinnu Anand getting robbed by Abhishek
- Duping scene involving Hussain Shaikh in the dance bar
- Engagement sequence of Abhisekh and Priyanka
- Hospital portions involving Riteish, Abhisekh and Boman
- Abhishek and Ritesh's first encounter in the lift
- Nana's introduction
- Abhi and Ritesh caught by the police
- The credit card sequence
Don't bluff yourself; we know you are looking forward to watching this movie.
