Aargh, if you would have only criticized them, called them beacons of consumerism, marketing ploys, I would have held back. But I have to address the misinformation herein.

Taylor Swift is a blonde, and never wanted to be a teen icon. Her music was always targeted to adult contemporary pop.

Miley Cyrus is a brunette, and a Disney teen icon. After years of being a Disney Icon she is trying to break into mainstream.

Leave Miley alone. LOL! No I'm not going to go Chris Crocker on you. In her controversial 'Party in the USA' performance, Miley danced with a pole - but did not pole dance. There is a difference. There was no stripping intentions. She also was filmed grinding at the Last Song after party.

The reason I pick on this, at the end of the day Miley is still a young impressionable person like any other. The grinding at parties etc is something all teenagers do. I find that it is extremely unfair of millions of people across the world to pick on one young person's mistakes. Not just pick on them, but blow them out of proportion and make it difficult.

It is always difficult to be a teen celebrity and such controversies only make it harder. Both Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan went crashing downhill due to the undue attention. The way things are going - I can see people pushing Miley down that path too.

A country star as an Hispanic wannabe?

You might as well say Sharon Angle wants to immigrate to Mexico.

Country music and its contemporaries bluegrass, honky tonk, rockabilly etc are very old school white American southern folk music. Taylor swift is a country musician.

Being country pop, Hispanics do listen to Taylor swift, but their music preference are the Latino and Tejano styles of music. In fact many Hispanics actually abhor country music and its followers - due to the stereotyping link of country music and southern conservatives.

I'm not sure about that. Miley Cyrus now maybe, but Hannah Montana was alright. Taylor Swift is a clean Christian entertainer, writes her own music, squeaky clean image, worked hard to the top. Don't know whats wrong in her being an idol.

Yep. Thats the truth. Ultimately ain't that the truth with most pop music. They go larger than life, make elaborate stuff to sell their stuff to consumers.

Miley Cyrus was manufactured by the almighty Disney machine, Taylor Swift also targets wider pop audiences instead of pure country.

Alright you confused Taylor with Selena. They are best friends though.

By the way ... be it Miley or be is Selena ... a proper teen idol should be someone righteous ... someone who did something truely meaningful for people around him/her or atleast their family and friends.

Honestly, how much should you expect from a teen. Maybe when someone is older, they mature into doing a lot more meaningful things. Teenagers are just teens, you cannot expect them to be caricatures of perfection and righteousness. Thy are still ordinary kids learning their way through life.

I don't really see anything wrong with Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber and the likes. I'm not a fan of all of them. But they are successful teens. Many of them promoting certain values, principles and charities.

IMHO America in the Regan era of the eighties was at the peak of consumerism. The country still consumes much more compared to the rest of the world. Channels like Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network etc provide entertainment value to children. They create shows and programming children can enjoy. I don't see anything wrong with that. The consumerism comes more from the manufacturers who use these platform to sell teenage products, it comes from parents who let children be blinded by celebrities and dismiss responsible behavior.

Honestly, there are several teenagers who are fans of some teen icon or another, without being some consumerist zombie.

But then again, its something American ... just like Consumerism is termed as just another word for Americanism! Well its true, I'm not being against Americans ... Why I just love them if your didnt notice (Bows to the glamorous moderator RTH).

Whether Miley or Hannah ... at the end its terrible to see their lives. Escapist teens, portraying a life which is about nothing but wants and needs and fun and no nothing else whatsoever ... filled with makeups! ...

Have you seen Hannah Montana? Or Wizards of Waverly? Or Suite Life?

The fact that several parents do let their kids watch these shows and supported them show that its not just about makeup and consumerism but a combination of entertainment and values. Unless you seriously think children's shows should not be about fun and entertainment and every one of them should have some serious hard hitting human values attached to them.

Back in Warwick I learnt about the amount they spend in UK and US on makeup! I'm not trying to be mean here but hey!!!! ...

Lets say its my POV ... but thats something many Sweds share, and so do many Indians (and also the special called NRIs)!

I admire the Swedish socialist sentiment and the way the economy is structured. But honestly, I don't think you speak for all of Europe or the Swedes or all NRI's.

A lot of Indians and NRI's let their kids watch Hannah Montana and be fans of Taylor swift and such.

Also I'd say even Sweden and Europe takes a leaf out of American consumerism

Swedish Idol.

Swedish teen icons

Also in 2003 did the ESC not create a whole new competition for kids so that kids could also now vye for a commercial consumerist music prize in a highly commercialized contest.

Selena Gomez!Tongue

In terms of talent, Taylor Swift is probably the better singer.
Seriously though, that 'pole dancing' crap was totally thrown out of proportion!
