Hey guys,
here's a touchy topic.  I know this isn't mythological but its about these worshipers called the Aghori's.  To be honest I didn't know of their existance until early this year when I watched Raaz 2 and the subtitles read cannibals for aghori's... me thinking that hindus were vegetarian I was like..erm W*F? yeah so I did alot of googling and found out that these worshipers are all about Shankar bhagvaanji and they worship in a different kind of way which really brings them to a level of percieving the world as God's creation so no one should be having any disgust or love towards anything..basically have an equality thinking for all things (and seriously i mean e v e r y t h i n g)

alot of the things they eat make my want to puke b/c to be honest I don't think I can eat alot of what they do.  But for them they are eliminating all the 'ewwww...thats gross' from their system and taking in everything...

Do read up upon them and share your thoughts about it.

For me atleast I was at first disgusted at the entire process of these ppl and the things they do (ie read about how they 'do it' ) also not only that but the things they eat and their way of life seem contradictory (read: alcohol) ..but after a while I kinda am sort of on a fence about them because I respect that they go through what they go through but on the other hand I am a bit iffy on the tantrics that they are said to perform

Oh and if you have any more info or insights do share! I really think this is an interesting topic and I know its very much hushed hushed in India since ppl either dislike them totally or don't care about them..but since I never knew baout them I would loovvvee to learn more!

I'm like, loving all your topics, lol :p

I heard about this somewhere! It's really interesting in a gross kind of way. I mean, I know I shouldn't say this, but I feel they are taking God's name in a bad way.

I also heard that they eat corpses of humans raw :p

I did not even know such a group/class existed before you posted this cuz I haven't even watched raaz.

So I read the information they had on wikipedia (I love wikipedia as much as my professors hate itROFL)
oh yes aghori, I was first shocked when I read about cannibalism in your post, yes, not all hindus are vegetarian but eating humans??
I am just shocked because wikipedia mentioned that they eat dead people (to the extent of obtaining from cremation grounds) and they still go on to call it 'vegetarian meal W*H?? Oh, not to mention that they hold shiva responsible for everything including thoughts.

I don't know what to say because I never knew about these people and do they still like live in India?? I am intrigued....will try to see if I can ask someone about this..

oh apparently, they have even been mentioned in a few moviesConfused

Yeah they're a bit in their own ways but they do eat corpses ..they do not kill anyone but they do take what is on burial grounds.  I actually watched a vid on YT about it and they showed the entire process/lives of these ppl, they showed taking a corpse and eating (not kidding, i'll pm u the link if u want) but it was just so intriguing b/c no one really wants to do a serious unbiased report on these people.

I am a fair person and my motto is live and let live so I have no big problem with them but just the black magic I am not so sure about.  Alot of articles and people shun them for what they are and what they do but in another way they are considered very holy.

LIke they say if you get blessed by these people you're life will be extremely happy and if you get cursed these baba's will and can make your life hell.  I don't know how much of this is true but I do know on the ghat's of banaras there are aghoris and they usually go there for worship alot.

But for the main part they try to stay out of hte mainstream city area.  (i mean when is the last time you saw a naked guy covered in ashes driving a bmw down bombay streets...)
I know they try to live in the harshest areas where they can be further tested for their inner faith.

I am not sure about the entire relation to Shivaji or in what way they take/praise him.  All I know that I was told by someone that they worship the 'destroyer' avtaar of shivji.

oh and on a side note, did you guys know kumbh mela is actually rooted from the aghori babas?? (<<I believe this is true...atleast wikipedia says so Ermm  rofl)

OMG Dead Had heard the word, but never knew what it meant... why'd you have to tell me, man LOL j/k... but I totally agree with Aish - there are so many... how to put it... unique little subsects within the Hindu world because it's been around so long and incorporated so many different regional/tribal/cultural beliefs... that we're bound to run into some questionable practices sometimes. There's this, and animal sacrifices I totally vehemently disagree with, and the elitist exuclusivists who don't allow any specific castes or foreigners in their temples... none of these seem to be true to Hindu ideals in the real sense, and yeah like Aish said they're misinterpreting and misusing the scriptures and coming up with conclusions that I'm not sure God would be happy with.

On the other hand, there are groups that take the something from the scriptures and cling to it through peculiar practices that are strange, but in a nicer sweeter way... there's this one group I've heard of led by a female guru (from Gujarat I think?? could be wrong) that never wears shoes so that they kill that many less ants every time they walk (cuz you know, feet have arches and then the arched part doesn't touch the floor and... why am I explaining this LOL).

Any other sects with strange practices that are strange in a good harmless way??

^ This is the cutest thing I've heard! LOL That's really sweet and faithful of them, honestly.

So the black magic part scares me too. Are these the kind of people who gain power for praying to God for evil reasons? Like they gain evil power through black magic? Or do they gain good power only?

Another sect I want to talk about is the Swami Narayan sect. My friend is one, and she believes only in Swami Narayan and not the rest of the Gods. That's still Hindu right? Was just curious

@aishi: yeah, alot of gujju's believe in swami narayan..that still is hinduism but i guess more specific...just like the hare rama-hare krishna ppl..they preach taht krishnaji is most supreme..although i believe hindus believe that all Gods ahve an equal importance so I think their belief is jsut more specific for them :)

you want me to see them eat dead people! well, how bad is it?LOL  If it's not graphic or repulsive I might watch, so send them to me anyways.

Yea, I was kinda relived to know that they don't actually go around killing people, but actually eat dead people. I don't really know if it's such a bad thing, I mean honestly I personally think that it's better than killing animals for their meat (no offense to anyoneEmbarrassed).  Though I don't necessarily agree with their perspective.Confused

baba as in these aghori babas?? Well, I personally believe that your destiny is in your hands or at least your actions which ultimately make your life. What you get in life is a result of your actions/karma.

But for the main part they try to stay out of hte mainstream city area.  (i mean when is the last time you saw a naked guy covered in ashes driving a bmw down bombay streets...)

wikipedia zindabaad!LOL but now why would these wikipedia people say so, I am all the more confused now. Well, I have no idea if kumbh mela actually originated from aghoris, but if wikipedia says so then... must be true
