I find this news and explanation ridiculous.
First it is a Sikh temple, and the Americans back home seem to associate it with the Muslim religion.
What does it matter whether he visits a Sikh or a Muslim Temple or Mosque ?
All people should be free to visit any place of worship so long as they conduct themselves in a proper manner.
What is your view of all this ?

Obama drops temple visit

NEW DELHI - US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has cancelled a visit to a Sikh temple in India, sources said on Wednesday, over apparent concerns that photos of him with his head covered would revive claims he is a Muslim.

During his state visit to India early next month, Mr Obama was scheduled to tour the Golden Temple in Amritsar - Sikhism's holiest shrine - where he would be required to cover his head in line with the religion's practices.

But aides feared images of him with a traditional scarf over his head could be used by opponents in the United States to portray him as a closet Muslim.

'He will not be going to Amritsar now,' a diplomatic official in New Delhi, who declined to be named, told AFP. 'The headscarf is one issue and there were other logistical issues that led to the cancellation.' The Indian foreign ministry said Mr Obama's tour of the Golden Temple had been prepared by an advance team of US diplomats.

'We provided them with all the support and guidance they needed but now it is for US officials to decide whether Mr Obama should go to the temple or not,' an official at the ministry told AFP.

I don't think many people outside the US understand how intense speculations over Obama's religion can be and how it can be a liability for the Democratic party as a whole. To many people Obama's religion even birth is a hot button issue. Moreover, the Republicans and Tea Party have actually gained a lot of ground over the past few months and might regain majority. With elections so shortly away, Obama cannot afford to risk the Democrats with further speculations.

It does not reflect on the freedom, democracy or secularism of Obama, Democrats, Republicans, the US government or America as a whole. It simply addresses a concern close to election time. Several election seats will be determined by people who have a sense of apprehension over Islam and neither party can afford to ignore it. Had it been right after election or a non critical time, it would have made no difference. Its just politics as usual.

yes guess 911 and Ground Zero has made matters worse.
He cannot be seen to be doing something that is "unacceptable" to the majority if he wants to stay in power.
But the question always is "Should a leader yield to popular requests or should they do what they believe is the right thing to do". Perhaps a compromise is best as not  everyone is able to change their views overnight and some time is needed.

Guess every country does view other countries with some suspicion.
Guess there is still a lot of racial issues in USA too, even India in unable to get rid of the class distinction. We have similar issues here ( to some extent) in Singapore where there is a Chinese Majority.

And yet some are pretentious enough to act like the policemen of the world.

 Latest update.
BBC

Noticed that it is depicted that in USA it is bad to be a Muslim ?????????Shocked
There is always association with the terrorists and it should be made clear that these are not Muslims. Terrorists are just criminals fighting an unauthorized private war.

Sikhs urge Obama to visit Golden Temple on India trip
Golden Temple, Amritsar, file pic The Golden Temple, or Harmandar Sahib, is Sikhism's holiest site

Sikh groups have urged US President Barack Obama not to avoid visiting the Golden Temple in Amritsar during his India trip next month, amid reports he is now unlikely to go there.

A US official told the BBC there were "logistical" issues.

Mr Obama would need to cover his head to enter the temple and there are reported concerns opponents would use this to show he is a closet Muslim.

The Golden Temple, or Harmandar Sahib, is Sikhism's holiest site.

Sikhs have been urged to use social network sites to press Mr Obama to go ahead with the visit.

'Support and guidance'

A US official told the BBC there had never been a final decision to go to the temple but conceded that it had been planned as a possible place for Mr Obama to visit.

The official said it was not definite that Mr Obama would not visit, but that it was unlikely.

Correspondents say that it had earlier been strongly hinted that Mr Obama would visit, and it appears the White House has not done its homework on the Golden Temple and the requirements and sensitivities associated with entering it.

Officials at the temple said that although heads needed to be covered, a simple cap for Mr Obama would suffice.

Hansdeep Singh, a senior staff attorney for the United Sikhs lobby group, said: "If these rumours are true, this is a tremendously disappointing moment for the entire Sikh community and religious minorities in general."

One Indian foreign ministry official told Agence France-Presse news agency an advance team of US diplomats had prepared the temple visit.

"We provided them with all the support and guidance they needed but now it is for US officials to decide whether Obama should go to the temple or not," the official said.

Mr Obama is a Christian, but a Pew Research survey of 3,003 Americans in August showed that 18% believed the president was a Muslim.

The poll found beliefs about the president's faith were closely linked to political judgements about him. It found that people who believed Mr Obama was a Muslim "overwhelmingly disapproved" of his job performance.

The United Sikhs group said that if Mr Obama did not visit it would be "a missed opportunity".

It said: "We implore the Sikh community and all others concerned with raising the visibility of religious minorities [to write and express], in a respectful manner, how important it is for President Obama to visit Harmandar Sahib through the White House's Twitter and Facebook sites."
