I didn't want to get into this discussion because there is no pleasing everyone. This forum is so divided over two fictional characters, the writer who created them would be so pleased....all writers want the public to fight over their creations.....Also just to make it clear I absolutely adore Krishna, he has more depths to plumb than the Atlantic ocean....also am a fan of Pratigya, admire her stand in her sasural.... This is post is to understand where Pratigya is coming from, which sometimes even I forget.....
The fact is Pratigya is a young girl, who had a happy and idealistic life till she left college (is that like University?).....Her whole family is idealistic, their behaviour dictated by their education. So when faced with something beyond their comprehension, they were worried, befuddled and made a hash of it - well anyone of us would if we didn't know what to do. Also a major reason was because it touched their daughter's izzat. I live in the UK and even I know how important it is to the parents that their daughters remain untouched by scandal......each time they thought they had handled the situation, another dilemma is presented each time escalating (phone calls, broken engagements, writing on the wall and then the ultimate - kidnapping)...living in a close knit community people were talking and the pressure on the family mounted.
Put yourself in Pratigya's shoes. What would you feel like in this situation and what would you do? Feelings would be shock and horror, almost scared (tick), then defiance (tick) and finally burning anger (tick)....this happened when her little sister got so scared she hid in the bedroom in broad daylight, her brother taken to jail....Now we've seen Pratigya to be a strong character, she slapped a goon in the train without a second thought, she assertively stood for herself when questioned by her dear papa at the station (no, coyness or tears or shame).....so we see what she is truly made of. She also cares about her family very much as shown so many times ad nauseaum over the dinner table (sorry!)......so coming back to the question, what would you do? well if it was me, I would want to hurt the guy who was responsible for all this...I would find out what he wants and then completely destroy that so he would feel an inch of what I had gone through.....lo and behold, Pratigya did this.....it became clear the guy 'responsible' (or so they think) is madly in love with her...she sees her chance and decides to marry him (very rash but very fictional, no touch of realism at all).........To her mind this marriage is for one purpose only: REVENGE. She gets this by denying him what he wants the most - a suhaag raat and the love he thinks he is entitled to. This is her revenge, the only way she could hurt him back.
As she settles into married life, she realises there is more to marriage - there is also a sasural. She also see's another side to her husband but dismisses it, surely he is not like that. She saw him as he truly was, terrorising a family, young girls and etc....There are times, she felt close to him but then something would happen and remind her off all her family went through and her heart would go cold again.........this was the cycle, each of them getting frustrated....Pratigya herself feels so alone and alienated in her sasural.....she partly made it like so, refusing to really give an inch, her inside still filled with her anger and totally leaning towards her maayka. The defiance is there, what else can he do that he already hasn't done? Rape her - only by force otherwise she will scream the place done but deep down she also know 's he wouldn't, somehow since the wedding and being close now, she knew he wouldn't (supported by her lack of fear after each attempt, then they are acting naturally together).
Deep down she knows he wants her to give herself freely to him as a sign that she cares. So she won't. That is their fight.
Then she finds out he is innocent of every crime they had him down guilty for. Her emotions now turned upside down – from one end of the pole to the other. She doesn't know what to feel.....the hatred she harboured for so long in her heart is no longer needed. But what is there left? Love?...she doesn't know and she is being honest. She refused to care for him and now she had to try. He is a difficult guy, keeps a lot to himself but is very passionate. She see's he cares about her, always supporting her and she wants to say something but cannot because of promises made to her father – the man who gave her life. Despite her education and independence she respects him so keeps quiet. Yet she is now torn between her parent and her husband, the husband who as each day is going is losing his grip on his patience and tolerance. She knows he has been more patient than most as his family taunt him and prick him so he would curb her. To her amazement he still defends her, yet his frustration peaks when they are together and he reverts to his conditioning......but she finally understood. After so long.
To make this marriage real, she would have to give up the only thing she held over him. How she feels about this isn't clear but it is the only power she has. Many people will revile her, spit on her for daring to deny her husband. But as many married women knows, sometimes there is no other weapon available against such a strong character like Krishna. He has bested her at all times. This is the one time she has bested him. Can they ever have love? Two strong people can have love without one thinking they are weak. It's all in the execution.
Tonight's episode has people taking sides,, but in my humble opinion they were both right and both wrong. There is no one right way or wrong way. Lot of things happen in the marital home, each individual makes their own life and go about it the best way they can, an outsider cannot say that is right or that is wrong. If those people can live with it, learn to love their spouse despite it then who are we to say that is wrong or that is right?
This is a show that will appeal to people of all different strata and background. There will never be a complete meeting of mind or agreement. The beauty is all of us are in a position to see the whole story. We knew Krishna was innocent of all the hurtful things done to Pratigya and family. We also saw how she broke and then melded into a woman full of fire with an oath burning inside her.
So surely, we can understand why they are both behaving like they are?
Please do comment, would love to hear from you all.
