EXPECTATIONS

Peppy, frothy and quite chic - this is what one expects from the music of Aisha which is one of the few chic flicks that are coming out of Bollywood now. Since youth is the flavour of the season, one expects the music of Aisha to be carrying urban sensibilities that one expects from the film as well. Add to the fact that the film has an unusual combination of composer Amit Trivedi and lyricist Javed Akhtar and you know for sure that there is something really exciting round the corner.

MUSIC

The moment you hear the title song of Aisha, you know that the album is going to have a really interesting and engaging journey from this point on. An upmarket number with urban groove written all over it, 'Aisha' is on the same lines as 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi' [Jaane tu Ya Jaane Naa] as far as the setting is concerned. A beautiful number which has Amit Trivedi coming behind the mike as well along with Nakash Aziz and Ash King, 'Aisha' has chartbuster written all over it. More than the fact that it has an appeal to become popular in days to come, the very factor that goes in its favour is it's loveable appeal. This one can't be missed and is a win up the sleeves for Amit Trivedi.

Well, if one would have thought that Aisha will settle down after a rocking opening number then that is not quite the case. That's because Amit Trivedi comes up with an instant chartbuster which is all set to be highly popular, especially in North India. 'Gal Mitthi Mitthi' is a new age Punjabi track and despite the folk flavour embedded into it, this Tochi Raina sung track is such a foot tapping track that it is tough not to fall in love with it in the very first listening. Rest assured, this one would have been an instant pick by the makers of Aisha once Trivedi would have played this one up. A 'dhol mix' version which follows next is just what the producer would have ordered her and it only adds more fun to the album.

There is a strong innocence factor in Trivedi's music as evidenced in his earlier soundtracks and the same can be evidenced in 'Sham' as well. Just the kind of track you want to sing with a bunch of friends around a bonfire, 'Sham' is third straight terrific number in a row which has the potential to become hugely popular if the film does well at the box office. While Trivedi leads the show behind the mike once again, he has Neuman Pinto and Nikhil D'Souza for company who make sure that the youth factor stays on to be consistent right through the album.

There is some fun soon after with a 50s style 'Behke Behke' that has Anushka Manchanda leading from the front with support from Raman Mahadevan and Samrat Kaushal. Anushka is one girl who has seldom disappointed in any of her outings so far and 'Behke Behke' proves that given the right setting and platform, her unique voice can do wonders. With a celebration feel to it with an air of seduction all around, 'Behke Behke' has a good tempo to it and should look good on screen.

Anusha Mani, in her limited Bollywood engagements so far, has always made a mark. Whether it is 'Dil Mein Jaagi' [Dev D] or 'Lazy Lamhe' [Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic], her voice has been noticed for it's uniqueness. Same is the case with 'Lehrein' as well which is truly an Anusha show all the way. Even though the song (with supporting vocals from Neuman Pinto and Nikhil D'Souza) is pensive and slow moving, it's the melody which helps 'Lehren' stand out. A track about happiness keeping some distance away and things not quite gone the way they were expected, this new age love song with a sad theme to it is extremely easy on ears and deserves a repeat hearing for itself. Surprisingly there is also a 'remix version' of the song but thankfully, it neither deviates the song from it's theme nor does it see an overdose of added beats or other arrangements that would have otherwise killed an excellent impact that 'Lehrein' had created.

Aisha ends on a peppy note though with Anushka Manchanda taking centre-stage all over again. Now this is what one terms as a killer track because there is so much fun, celebration and girlie factor that comes together in 'By The Way' that it is difficult not to jive to the beats here. High on pace, spirit, attitude and rendition, 'By The Way' (with support from Neuman Pinto) is the kind of number that one would love to listen to in a campus rock outing or a drive down the highway. Bring it on!

OVERALL

Aisha springs a pleasant surprise. Of course one did expect a good score here but what one gets to hear is complete album that is new age, different and yet so appealing to youth. There is not a single song which doesn't work and each one tries to better the other. Ever since the release of music of Dev D, one wondered if composer Amit Trivedi would ever manage to come up with a wholesome album like that. He did compose for a few films in between and some of his work did impress. However, Aisha will clearly stand out as his best score since Dev D. Go for it and play it on with friends!

Amit Trivedi is the man of the moment it seems with his demand increasing more and more by the day. His recently released album Udaan lived up to expectations and now it's time to see if his much awaited album Aisha has a similar outcome. Expectations from this album would have been without a doubt sky high as it's a film that has been making the news for quite some time. It marks the debut of Rajshree Ojha as director, Rhea Kapoor as producer and has a very young and chic cast consisting of Abhay Deol and Sonam Kapoor. More importantly it is said to be an adaptation of Jane Austen's classic 'Emma' which is the reason why there exists an additional buzz around the film. Trivedi was entrusted with the task of bringing in the musical backing for the film with the company of the legendry Javed Akhtar as lyricist. So does the album live up to all the hype, let see!

The album kicks off with a track that has already proven to be a hit from what audiences have heard of it in promos, Suno Aisha. Trivedi takes to the mic himself with additional vocals from Adit, Ash King and Nakash Aziz. It's a catchy pop styled number with great input from jazz instruments, all enveloped in Trivedi's soothing vocals. The contrast that emerges when the upbeat music and the soft vocals of Trivedi mix together is the main reason why this one works so well! No surprises that lyrics are Aisha centric and beautifully woven together by Javed Akhtar. A definite highlight of the album.

Tochi Raina takes to the mic next with Gal Mitthi Mitthi a song with such a bizarre introduction that you're bound to want to listen to more of it in order to uncover the rest of the song. This one is another hip hop piece with fusion created through the use shehaniyees (traditionally used in weddings), Punjabi dhols, Punjabi chorus and Punjabi lyrics courtesy of Javed Akhtar. The composition is indeed commendable, the background beats especially create a great flow however what fails to impress and demand appreciation is Tochi's voice. He seems to be yelling out the words at a pitch that doesn't alter throughout the song. A bombay bounce mix version of the song is also included in the album and bouncy this version indeed is. Apart from the additional techno instruments used and additional beats this one has nothing to offer. Trivedi disappoints with this track especially since the album started off on such a positive note.

Things brighten up with the third track of the album Sham. Amit Trivedi and Neuman Pinto join hands for a track that is very much Trivedi at its core. It's a soft number predominantly boasting of beautiful acoustics. Trivedi's vocal is the reason this one shines because the track has been mixed as such that instruments do not overpower the vocals but rather the track is carried forward solely by the vocals. This is the most impressive trait of the song because in the modern age composers all too often get carried away with all the gadgets they can now use with their instruments. Lyrics are another highlight of the track because whilst it remains to be a romantic number it's not overly dramatic about the emotions but rather talks about the small things like the essence of silence when two people are together. No reaching for stars and bringing down the moon, Akhtar keeps its practical with this one and it's indeed a refreshing trait of the track that makes it a winner all the way.

Anushka Manchanda waltzes in next with her ever so sexy vocals full of attitude and breathes a new life into the album with Behke Behke. It's a track with European influences from all over. The hip hop back beat pounding in your ears throughout the track is a definite highlight as it adds the extra attitude to the song. Anushka is at her best and honestly leaves you in more awe of her, not that we already weren't stunned by her amazing vocals. Samrat and Raman add flavor to track. Everything is flawless about this one except for the occasional English rap that really could have been done without.

Bekhe Behkhe - Bombay Bounce Mix gives a new spin to the original track with obvious digital enhancement to the otherwise very 'raw' track. However no tempo alterations are made thankfully, thus the essential feel of the track remains the same. Check it out if you want a slightly different take of the same track.

After the very upbeat 'Behke Behke' the album comes to the soft rock number titled Leherein which inherently is your ideal reflective and somewhat heartbreaking number. Anusha Mani takes to the mic and is a complete revelation considering the last prominent track we heard her in was 'Lazy Lamhe' from Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic which showcased an absolute opposite side of hers compared to what we witness in this number. Indeed a versatile vocal that ought to be used more and more. The soft chorus given by Neuman and Nikhil adds a great layer to the track.

Attitude comes back into the album with Anushka Manchanda stepping up once again with By The Way. Considering that Aisha is based on 'Emma', one really can see why Trivedi chose Anushka to feature in the album, the woman's attitude is more than perfect for the character. This one is a classic chick-rock number with quirky lyrics that grab your attention. Although without a doubt Anushka is the one thing that holds this track together and gives it life.

The answer to the question as to whether Aisha's music lives up to the enormous expectation would be yes and no. It is not completely flawless as 'Gal Mitthi Mitthi' stands out like a sore thumb and the additional Bombay Bounce Mixes really seem to be album fillers. However, at the same time the album entails tracks in which Trivedi's work truly shines. If there was one word to describe the composer it would be 'fresh'. He's like no other we've witnesses and dares to be different which is to be commended. With five out of seven tracks proving to be extensively impressive, Aisha's soundtrack ends up being a worthwhile investment that you won't regret.

A touch of euphony

The mood is set, the feeling feathery light, and couldn't find a better line than "seem to walk on wings, and tread in air", from 'The Iliad' of Homer, for the Aisha music score. The songs composed by the young and cute Amit Trivedi of Dev. D fame and written by the poet-lyricist Javed Akhtar have created quite a flurry in this fledgling mind.

Joie de Vivre! What better way than a song to describe Aisha (Sonam Kapoor), who moves like a style goddess and looks a beauty queen! So, here is Suno Aisha, the first song of the album crooned by Ash King and Amit himself. The track instantly perks you up with its virility and rhythm. That's the quality of an instant hit.

No deadly use of bombastic beats for the sake of a Punjabi track. Amit has got it right with this quasi folk number Gal Mitthi Mitthi, a peppy, party track that won't take that long to find a place in your playlist. Yes, you guessed it right; the singer is the same Pardesi boy from Dev D - Tochi Raina.

Wonder how long the bloke took to compose this song! Shaam sung by the band of fresh singers Nikhil D'Souza, Neuman Pinto and Amit is not only simple in its lyrics but in its approach too. It seems to be a nave creation with the help of a guitar but the tone of the song just tugs at the heart like the song 'While my Guitar gently weeps'.

After Boom Boom from the previous song, it's a bang from Anushka Manchanda as she throws out a feeler Behke Behke. The song clearly reminds of the Saathiya beach number Chori Pe Chori. One can expect racy moves in the song given its oomph quotient. Can't wait to see that.

The album mellows down a bit with Lehrein. Anusha Mani renders this sombre number with utter ease. Though the song is slow and melancholic, it will find its takers; yes the music has that feel which will click the youths.

Anushka Manchanda again delivers her career's best with By The Way. The carefree, gypsy mood of the song is best expressed with the use of rock music that is not of today but bears a clear stamp of the 60s. It seems that not only the look of the film is inspired by the classic times but also its music.

What can you expect from a remix? Gal Mithi Mithi [Bombay Bounce Dhol Mix] by DJ Llyod offers you that. Let's jive and sway to the music. Lehrein Remix wasn't required, nevertheless the song is good.

Aisha means 'she who lives'. The makers not only chose the perfect character name for this Sonam Kapoor-starrer which is high on juvenile verve, but struck a great music deal too. Seeing Amit's history of producing unconventional Bollywood tracks, the 'Aisha' compositions have us completely floored. The composer has got fire in the belly and he has proved his mettle yet again.

In its light-heartedness and youthfulness Suno Aisha falls right in the league of JTYJN, Dostana and the likes but it is in the orchestration that Amit Trivedi makes his individuality felt. Starting from the clockwork sort of background which opens the track, the various layers that then add on make the song ultra-addictive. Ash King sounds quite like Rashid Ali singing this, with a good backing from the composer and Nakash Aziz. Tochi Raina enters next with Gal Mitthi Mitthi, a Punjabi track which is interesting in parts thanks to Amit's clever tweakings. Liked the classical bit inserted at the start (Bhimpalasi raag I believe) but the shehnai sound seemed synth-generated. Nevertheless this song wouldn't rate as high as the Punjabi-styled tracks Amit has done for Dev D. The remix by DJ Lloyd and Discreet sounds almost as good as the original. The unplugged melody called Sham is evocative of such classics as Raindrops Keep Fallin' in its sedate arrangement and has pretty much similar effects on you as you listen. The second interlude is a sort of surprise though! And the way Neuman Pinto and Amit Trivedi have delivered the song is simply brilliant, the harmonic choral elements being provided in the right areas.

Its catchy Spanish elements dominated by the guitar and the accordion make Behke Behke an instant winner. Being right down her lane, Anushka Manchanda does a fab job on the vocals, as do Raman Mahadevan and Samrat Kaushal on the chorus. Lehrein is all about the poignant violin and Anusha Mani's husky voice. Add to that a rock-based template from Amit Trivedi and the result is sheer brilliance! Anusha Mani is a singer who badly needed a big break in Bollywood, and I get a feeling this could be that song. DJ Lloyd and Discreet do a fair job on the remix as well, going for mellowed down version instead of an electronic overdose. The soundtrack ends the way it started, with another hep track. The similarity also extends to the pitch change towards the end. But unlike Suno Aisha, By The Way is a rock-based track, rendered to perfection by Anushka Manchanda and Neuman Pinto. The initial guitar riff reminded me of M.I.A's Paper Planes but the similarity ends in that short riff after which the track moves on to party mode.

Just a week since Udaan hit the shelves, Amit Trivedi continues to amaze with his consistency as he churns out another unputdownable (for the want of a better word! ) soundtrack for Aisha. Respect. You can listen to the soundtrack here.
