Anyway, let me rephrase to a more appropriate direction. Yes raising hand on others is always wrong. Is someone who raises their hand on another adult always a bad person? Or can people be forgiven for such mistakes? Should it always mean press charges?

Well, unless it was a spur of the moment thing. You dont have to press charges...
Like the couple is arguing and then hurtful accusations arise and then the man or woman slap their spouse. And then right away, if the person realizes that they just hit their spouse and that it was wrong and start to apologize and like "OMG" and all that...there is no need to press charges. The spouse who got slapped may be angry for a while (and should be!) but this is not something to go complain to the police before (if it was the first time). They can kiss and make-up after a while.

BUT, it if happens repeatedly...its a major problem.

It may happen once by accident, but if the person really regretted it, IT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.

If it happens repeatedly and your spouse says "it will not happen again" every single time, its a sign that it will continue.

Just to clarify, I by no means support physical abuse or think its ok to hit anyone - men or women. Grown ups should know better on how to handle temper.

My point is mistakes happen, and as you said people who are genuinely sorry will make up and never do it again. At the same time, I have seen some women take the 'physical abuse' thing way too extremely. Sometimes arguments get physical, as in not hitting but  like the 'don't leave' grabbing of hands, 'don't walk away when I am talking to you grab' or 'leave me alone for now' push or 'you are not leaving till we sort this' block. A person is not trying to hit or be abusive, but can actually be very emotional at the moment. Is it always abuse?

Also where does other stuff like banging doors, breaking objects, throwing stuff, fit in. Its not really hitting someone - but its a lot of physical venting. It can be frightening to watch and especially when kids are around - it is a very unhealthy atmosphere.
