Some outside the caste/community, a few outside the religion, a few with foreigners - but its wonderful to see parents on both sides and the whole happy extended family all together smiling and laughing in the wedding pics. When we were in school years ago, many of these people would have said - marrying outside would be sacrilegious in their family.

True that! Ask me too...

A few months ago, one of my dearest cousins got engaged to a Chinese girl. Not exactly the Chinese from China type, but they pray Christ, so they're basically christian-Chinese over here in Mauritius. Well whatever, it's far from the same caste, not even the same religion. I think my aunt sure had conflicting thoughts about it at the start, but my uncle's always been liberal enough in his approach to life - he's an atheist anyway. They - my cousin and his now fiancee - actually pulled it off quite well at the end. One realizes that parents easily bow down to their kids choices, whatever the religion or caste may be, provided that it's a decent enough decision. I'd like to add that it's a lovely girl for sure. We've become the best of friends in just a few months!

The two were going out with each other since school days. In between, my cousin-brother went away to the States for his Uni studies, while the girl went away to Australia for hers. They were only in contact through net, phone, emails for nearly 6 years. Then my cousin came back 2 years ago and they got engaged after talking to their respective families. It's now been almost ten years since they know each other.

He's is pretty much the best example I usually look upon to when I want to say: "If you know how to convince your parents, and if you yourself are sure of your decision, then nothing's going to stop you from doing the right thing properly!"

I agree. 15 minutes of romantic love is too low. How about 16?
Wrong. It should be 15 minutes and a second.
