Siggy Tutorial - Part 1 (Intro to Tools)
***********************************************************

This is a real basic introduction to the various tools you should know to make a signature image. These are pretty basic tools you should get comfortable with before you make your graphic.

The Zoom Tool
This tool is one of the most important tools you will need. It allows you to zoom in and out of your picture. This is a very important tool to know when you are editing your picture, as you can get a more accurate cut.

The Selection Tool
the tool you need in order to edit your image, and take out any unnecessary image. This is basically a cutting tool that you will use to cut any unwanted part of your image. There are three types of selection tools:

Freehand: this gives you more freedom in cutting, as you can cut anyway you need.

Rectangular: This is more limited as you can cut in only particular shapes. The preset shape is a rectangle, but you can also cut in circles and other shapes.

Magic Wand: A magic wand is used if you only want to take out a certain color. For example, if you have a picture that has a hideous red background, you can use your magic wand tool to just get rid of all the red background, and leaving your image intact. But be careful! sometimes some of the color you are taking out might also be in the image you want to stay.

Paintbrush Tool:
As the name says, its just like using a regular paintbrush.

Pen Tool:

Most helpful for making straight lines. This tool will create an automatic vector layer. In order to make it into a regular layer, just go to "Layer > Convert to Raster Layer"

Move Tool:

VERY IMPORTANT! this tool helps you move your image around the canvas. Very well used, especially if you are working with layers.

Fill Tool:

As the name implies, its main purpose is to fill a layer with a solid color, pattern, or gradient colors.

Crop Tool:

Useful when you only want a portion of an original picture. use it to cut out only a part of a picture.

Shape Tool:

Many asked how i made the stars for my tutorial. Well, its this tool. It allows you to make shapes on your canvas, which include circles, rectangles, and stars.

Text Tool:

As the name implies, this allows you to write on your canvas. Like the pen tool, whenever you use a text tool, it will be in vector format. \

Preset Shapes:

This tool is a real nice because its like a stamp. There are some preset images you have, and you can select and stamp them onto your canvas. You can also download some images from the company website to use. A more fun tool.

Siggy Tutorial Part 2 - Layers
***********************************************************

What are layers? Layers help you in putting different pictures together onto one canvas. Its just like putting pages on top of one another. So lets introduce layers!

Background Layer - as the name implies, it is a background layer. It always stays at the bottom, and cannot be moved above other layers. a picture is usually a background layer when its in "jpg" or "gif" format. In order to convert this into a regular layer, you must go to "layers > convert to raster layer".

Raster Layer - A raster layer is a regular layer where you can do basically anything. Its the layer that images are usually on.

Vector Layer - this layer is used for texts, and preset shapes. The good thing about this layer is once you put something on, you will be able to go back and edit it anytime you want, unlike a raster layer. However, to do some editing, you need to make it into a raster layer. To do so, head for "layer > convert to raster layer".

Siggy Tutorial - cutting out images
**********************************************************

im going to go about the siggie tutorial with making a siggie right with you. ill do it in small steps so you guys can catch up. Today, we will be getting two images ready to add to the final signature. like before, i will be using aishwaryia rai.

before we begin, lets introduce the two images you will be using. Open them up, right click, and pick "copy image". Open up your paintshop program, and click "edit > paste as new image".

http://www.santabanta.com/wallpapers/rating.asp?catid=401190

once you do so, we need to resize the image, as its way too large for a sig.

for [image 1], head for "edit > resize image" and resize the height to "400". Let the width be whatever comes up and click ok. Save your file as "aish1.psp".

for [image 2] do the same thing, and save as "aish2.psp".

now we are ready to edit the images.

1. if you did my earlier tutorials, you should realize that since this is a normal picture, it is not a raster layer, but a background layer. we cant have this because background layers are flat and cannot be changed. So lets convert it to a "raster layer". Head for "layers > convert to raster layer". Do this for both images.

2. Now you will be using two tools for this part of the tutorial. The selection tool and the zoom tool.

3. Now, we only want aish and not the background. So we need to cut it out. To do this neatly, we will be using the zoom tool. It is very useful to getting close to the pic and cutting the image accurately.

4. So zoom as close as you can to aish (the closer, the more accurate", and use the selection tool (look at previous post to see how it looks like) to cut the image.

*** TIP: to cut the image by selection tool alone will give the image a very sharp edge. For a smoother edge, look at the top when you select the "selection tool". You will notice an option called "feather". This is a great tool to add a softness to your edge. You can play around with it and see how it works. If you have "0" there will be no softness to the side, and the higher it goes, the more your picture will fade as you cut. ***

for this image, select "3" for your feather.

Now use the tool and cut the edges off. Do the same for image 2 but use a "20" feather. You should not have these:

this concludes the editing part of the images. tomorrow i will show you how to paste these images to your new sig and play around with backgrounds and other neat tools.

its for Paintshop Pro, but photoshop has very similar tools, so you can also use it there.
