I don't obsess over lead roles: Prachi Shah

 

The only difference is that while her daughter Khiana is one year old, her on-screen beti is quite close to her own age. Not an ideal situation for any actor, is it? "No it's not," she admits. But then that's the rule of the game. "When age leaps came into play, things changed a lot. I'm okay with doing a mother's role because the trend which is going on nowadays is such that nobody will give me a lead role. I don't obsess over lead roles. I think actors like me are now looking for meaty roles rather than lead roles."

Prachi points out that good roles are difficult to come by. "I had been offered roles, but I was waiting for something that would be worth leaving my daughter at home," she says. And not playing a lead has actually worked in Prachi's favour. "Not playing the lead ensures that I don't have to be present on the sets all the time. It gives me time to look after my daughter and also gives me time to take care of my other passion ' dance."

She may not be the lead but Prachi feels that the current crop of actors have yet to find a foothold because there are just too many faces on the small screen. "There are so many channels and so many shows, so there are going to be many faces. However, the problem is that people never get to know these actors by their names. They are always recognised by the character they play. However the previous actors, be it me, Smita Bhansal or Smriti Irani, people knew us and not just the characters we played," she says. Prachi seems to be pretty happy with the deal that TV is offering her. And though reality shows are the name of the game today, Prachi hasn't been part of any. "I am one of those people who's not comfortable putting my private life on display," she says.
