did anyone read the book NAMESAKE by jhumpa Lahiri...it's a great book(i recommend this book)...it's one of my fav books...they are making a movie based on the book...let's see wht kind of justice they do to this book....

Here's the article tht i came across on the internet...

OH MY GOD! Tabu has finally been roped in to play the lead female
protagonist in The NamesakeIn a role round-robin that's been doing the
rounds for a few months now, Tabu has taken over from Konkona Sen-Sharma to play the key female protagonist in Mira Nair's The Namesake.

It may be recalled that Sen-Sharma had first replaced Rani Mukherjee
for the same role in October last year.

Announcing the "last minute turn of events", Nair's publicist writes in
from New York, "Tabu will be replacing Konkona Sen as Ashima Ganguli,
(lead protagonist) Gogol's mother β€” one of the central characters of the
story. The switch has occurred because of a change in Nair's shooting
schedule that now coincides with Aparna Sen's film, where Konkona plays
the lead."
Mukherjee had to back out of the same role due to "date problems" late
last year. Nair's forthcoming film is based on the well-received novel
The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. It has been adapted to screen by Sooni
Taraporevala.

The main cast-credit list so far reads Abhishek Bachchan, who is set to
play Gogol, though he has not confirmed yet, and Irrfan Khan, who is to
essay Ashoke Ganguly β€” Ashima's husband.

Incidentally, Nair had cast Tabu four years ago in a film that never
got made. Tabu also stars as the female-lead in Zoya Akhtar's debut, Luck
By Chance, of which Nair is the co-producer.

As for The Namesake, the director of acclaimed features Monsoon Wedding and Salaam Bombay begins shoot for in New York at the end of March, and relocates to Kolkata by mid-May, Nair says, "I want to make this classic, poignant story with hot, meditative strokes β€” capturing the gothic bustle of old Bengal against the pulsating new look of young, cool
desi-power in New York City."

What's The Namesake about?

Inspired: Mira Nair
Pulitzer-Prize-winner Jhumpa Lahiri's first novel, The Namesake is the
story of Gogol, the son of immigrants from India, who is named after
the Russian author.

The beautiful prose concerns the gap between Gogol and his family β€” he
born into America and wanting to fit in within contemporary New York
society, his parents unable to let go of the land they knew and the
customs they grew up with.

Gogol spends his life distancing himself from his family and their
ways, somewhat desperately trying to assimilate himself into the American way of lifeSO, SHE'S BETTER THAN ME?!
Konkona Sen-Sharma was set to replace Mukherjee. Sen-Sharma had said a few months ago, "Mira had seen me in Mr & Mrs Iyer.

That's how she offered me this role." Sen-Sharma eventually had to back
out due to Aparna Sen's Bengali feature that begins shoot at the same
time as Nair's film.

I WASN'T ACTING PRICEY! Rani Mukherjee was the original choice for
Ashima Ganguly's role in Mira Nair's Bengali-English bilingual. Nair had
said then, "I've signed Rani to play the pivotal role of Ashima. I've
been wooing her over the phone ever since I saw her in Mani Ratnam's
Yuva." It was later learnt that Mukherjee could not do the film due to date problems.

Hey I agree with you Minnie. Thank god they didn't put Rani as Abhisheks Mother. Tabu will be the right choice because she kind of looks old. I don't like Tabu that much. But do you guys know she has a sister who is a Televisiion actress. I forgot her name though. I think her sister is better than her.πŸ˜•
