What's ailing Parvati?

Saakshi Tanwar in
Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii
Friends of TV star Saakshi Tanwar who plays Parvati in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (Star Plus) have expressed concern about the actress.

Saakshi who has been losing weight steadily and appearing wan and teary-eyed on the sets has been under tremendous strain playing the role of care-worn housewife Parvati. For the last four years she has been working almost 18 hours a day without breaks, which even resulted in two fainting fits.

She was diagnosed as suffering from acute fatigue and vertigo and was advised a long break which she hasn't taken because of her commitments in Kahaani.

Co-workers have also commented on her increasingly erratic behaviour on sets.

"She would get so involved in her character that there were times when she'd keep crying uncontrollably even after the shot was okayed," says a co-actor pleading anonymity.

Yet another Balaji staffer added: "Saakshi can get rather unpredictable.

She'd throw a fit if visitors came on the sets and ask them to leave the premises. She is often rude and occasionally weird though she is trying to make an effort now to socialise with others on the sets."

Tanwar, who is one of the most popular and best-paid artistes on television essays the role of a harried housewife who goes through several upheavals in life and is often anxious and depressed.

Admitting that her on-screen character has indeed taken a heavy toll on her, Tanwar says, "The last six months of 2003 was the worst period in my life. I was in a very bad condition. I had lost weight and was in terrible shape.

I have also been suffering from vertigo and can't board planes or climb stairs. I have been seeking treatment but it turned out to be more of a mental problem than a physical one. I have had to use a lot of my will power to try and overcome this and I recently went on a plane trip."

Very often, says the actress all that endless crying on the sets left her with no energy.

"It was so stressful to weep that I had nothing left to say to anyone. It came to a point that I started feeling like Parvati in real life also. But the current track sees her as a stronger personality who is set out to avenge all the wrongdoings.

There was no time to spend with the family and the last Diwali was the first one in five years that I could spend with my parents and go out and travel," she adds.

Though shooting for the daily soap her schedule is still in full progress, Tanwar says that she is making a conscious effort to break out of the Parvati mould and is considering other offers that are coming her way. "I have now learnt that I must respect my mind and my body foremost".

Fitness expert Dr Snehalata Pandey's tips to avoid breakdown:

Having no work to do takes a greater toll on a person than overwork. But one needs to have a balanced work profile.

Any kind of weight loss is great as long as it isn't due to some sickness.

If you are working for a show for a long period it is must to undergo health check-ups at regular intervals.

Drink lots of water.

Respect your body and have no self-pity. Have confidence in yourself to be a better individual.

Sweta Keswani who worked in Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki at the same time

I still remember the time I would shoot for Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand.

Aruna ji would call us at 7.30 am for a 9 am shot, and all of us compulsorily had to be there. She is a real taskmaster. I have definitely undergone lot of physical stress in those days.

When you shoot from 7 am to 11 pm, what else would you expect? I am a short girl, around 5'2" so I would be wearing heels most of the time that would kill my feet.

One doesn't realise the amount of time you spend standing on the sets, and if you are doing a daily then it's just killing. I like other television stars would carry a pillow with me and crash anywhere I could. Also if you are doing outdoors for a long time in the sun then you end up dehydrating yourself.

Food is another concern. Most of the set tiffin is really bad for your tummy. Fortunately my mom would always see to it that I carried home food.

When I quit Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, a lot of people thought I walked out due to the age leap but the real reason was that I was getting burned out.

It was too difficult concentrating on both Kahaani and Des at the same time, which would make me work for more than 12 hours back to back.

Sasha
(Chetan Hansraj)
Soap: Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii
He might last out because he's both good (Kkusum) and bad (Kahaani) which is just what the women like. Also, he's tall so he does kind of dwarf the others

Garg family entering in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii

August saw the entry of super bikers into Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii.

The stage, set for the next generation war, had Parvati facing Garima and three youngsters who zoomed into the Aggarwal household with their XXL size attitude and arrogance.

These unannounced guests are the siblings of Om's (Kiran Karmarkar) cousins Deven and Rohan — the family's long-forgotten members. Not only does the group claim stake to the family property, but Sasha also attempts to sleep with Gun.

Sweta Keswani

The soaps: Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Dekho Magar Pyar Se (all on Star Plus)

Why: This vampy damsel sure stirred up a riot by walking out of three shows. The reason for the hat trick — not being too happy with the sudden track changes. While one of the show was on the brink of an age leap, the other two didn't have much meat to offer this demanding lady.

From the horse's mouth:  My character was not moving ahead and I had already requested the producers to relieve me. As Anu's character is negative, her end had to be gory.

What next: After gyrating to an item song in the skin flick Tauba Tauba, she will be seen as a bar dancer in a DVD film Jackpot.

Sakshi Tanwar

The soap:
Devi (Sony)

Why: The buzz doing the rounds was that Tanwar was extremely unhappy with the way show was shaping up. Apparently she wanted the show to focus on her original character of Gayatri, the housewife. She did not want to be portrayed as a goddess and an incarnation of Durga.

From the horse's mouth: It was a mutual decision and everything has been cordially finalised between the channel and the producers, my character will make a graceful exit in the next couple of weeks.

What next: Parvati in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii takes all her time to look out for other roles.

Alyy Khan

The soap:
K Street Pali Hill (Star Plus)

Why: Barely had the show started Aly Khan was replaced by Mukul Dev from the eighth episode. According to the producers Khan was being difficult right refusing to give time to shoot promos for the show.

From the horse's mouth: Well, I couldn't give them the dates they wanted, as I had prior commitments. It's ridiculous to suggest that I didn't give time to shoot the promos! .

What next: Is seen as Manish Goel's mama in Devi

Shweta Kwatra

The soap: Kkusum (Sony) and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (Star Plus)

Why: Kwatra quit the shows because of creative differences with Ekta. The TV star felt that she was stagnating in the shows.

From the horse's mouth: In Kkusum, my character of Esha had lost its flavour. Anyway, I was hardly there in the plot of late. For Kahaani… after it took a generation leap, it lost it's luster.  I was playing mother to people who are in my age group or even older to me. They were calling me mom…after some time it gets to you.

What next: Made a comparatively low profile entry as Purab's friend Meenakshi in Jassi.

Take Ten: Tisca Chopra
   By: Shaheen Parkar
   December 13, 2004

Tisca Chopra
Tisca Chopra plays the character of Riya Sen in Astitiva — Ek Prem Kahani (Zee) and Mallika in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (Star Plus).

She also features in Manish Goswami's untitled political drama which will air on Zee early next year.

Chopra will be seen on the big screen in Bappaditya Roy's Sau Jhoot Ek Sach in which she has done a cameo and in iDreams' Cate Karma.

Here are 10 things about her.

What is your star sign?
Scorpio.

Do you believe in astrology and numerology?
I disbelieve in the fact that stars can determine our destiny. We can alter our destiny if we really want to —- it all depends on what you do.

Where were you born, and which school did you go to?
I was born in Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh. I did my schooling at the Indian International School in Kabul (Afghanistan) and later at the Apeejay School in New Delhi.

For what did you get your first pay cheque and how much?
For modelling a sweater for Angora; they were into exporting woolens abroad. I got the offer through an aunt's friend. I was paid Rs 5,000 for it.

What is the one thing you are really bad at doing?
Making polite conversation.

What do you wear at home?
T-shirts and shorts.

What mobile phone do you use?
It's a Nokia.

What's the best thing about working in entertainment?
It gives you a chance to play so many roles and still be yourself. You could be a murderer, social worker, housewife or even a lawyer without even going anywhere close to law school.

What's the worst thing?
There is nothing I don't like about it, otherwise I would not have been a part of it.

How often do you say 'I love you'?
Several times — to my husband Captain Sanjay Chopra.
