Best of the Best

Priyanka proves a bigger hero than Pamir when it comes to your choice of the best bollywood movie between Puja '08 and '09

1. Wow! An all-woman's film by a reality bites director like Madhur Bhandarkar being voted the Best Film is quite a surprise. Bagging around one-third of the total votes, Fashion is the top movie of the t2 Screen Awards. Led by a terrific performance from Priyanka Chopra, who plays a small-town model climbing the compromise-laden ladder to the top of the fashion world, the film turned out to be a good blend of message and mainstream, real and reel. Best moments? Priyanka's Meghna walking out on her boyfriend, getting into a cab, lighting a cigarette and telling the cabbie "chalo?!". Also, Meghna waking up to find herself in bed with a drug peddler and the mirror-front self-realisation scene that follows. 2. The jumbo blockbuster called Ghajini was quite a favourite with the t2 reader. The beautiful Aamir-Asin romance in the film has a lot to do with it. Although well short of Fashion in terms of the number of votes, Ghajini managed to beat the rest of the field. The best moment? Asin's Kalpana flaunting her boyfriend 'Sanjay Singhania' to Aamir's Sanjay Singhania, while he just looks at her and listens intently, with a hint of a smile on his face.
3. Boy meets girl, boy leaves girl, boy meets girl again... Imtiaz Ali may be blamed for making the same love story three times over but boy, can he touch a chord or two! Love Aaj Kal might not have sparked the Jab We Met kind of hysteria but whoever went in, came out with a smile. Best moment? Sorry Deepika, but it has to be the Veer Singh-Harleen Kaur love story, when he comes and sits down on the roadside bench (in Lake Market) and she comes out to the balcony and smiles at him. (Shakespeare would have approved the Punjabi Romeo-Juliet moment!) Followed by that endearing exchange of mithai and chai. 4. Karan Johar producing a 'gay' film caused smirks and sniggers galore, but Dostana delivered and how! The guys might have only been
pretending to be homosexual but the comedy hit the right notes and the right tones from John's yellow trunks to Priyanka's golden swimsuit. Best
moment? Boman Irani's gay fashion editor
visiting Priyanka's house, discovering Abhishek Bachchan, doing the Beedi jalai le and then, enter, Kirron Kher!
5. Vishal Bhardwaj trying a mainstream masala movie was sure going to be a bumpy ride. And so was Kaminey, kutti cheez for some, not so kamini for others. Too many baddies and too many twists spoilt the fun for some. Still, a powerhouse performance from Shahid Kapur, a feisty act from Priyanka Chopra and Dhan te nan managed to make this quite a trip. Best moment? The totla Shahid trying to sing his way out of trouble with inspectors Lobo and Lele. 6. Dollops of freshness was the real charm of New York. John-Katrina-Neil brought out a very different and very attractive face of Bollywood with post-9/11 terrorism in the backdrop. The anthemic Hai junoon really helped create the buzz. Best moment? The planes hit the twin towers but Neil realises that he's lost his lady love to John, a more acute pain for him.
7. Dev D remains the biggest sleeper hit of the past 12 months. Made with a paltry budget of Rs 6 crore, the Anurag Kashyap film which called a spade a spade (and created a heady cocktail of sex, drugs and Emotional atyachaar) hit home with the youth. Best moment? Mahie's Paro coming to meet Dev after a long time and choosing to clean his room and wash his clothes. 8. According to Fame Cinema's Shunali Shroff, Luck By Chance did better business in Calcutta than in Mumbai. The votes don't reflect that. The Zoya Akhtar film is at the bottom of the Best Film list. Best moment? Farhan's audition sequence playing out to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's Sapnon se bhare naina.
