Nobody told the 'whole truth' to win Rs 1 cr
Priyanka Srivastava
New Delhi,  September 20, 2009

Actress Roopa Ganguly's confessions marked the concluding episode of Star Plus's hit reality show, Sach Ka Samna, on Friday night.

The controversial show, in news ever since it started airing three months ago, saw some startling revelations by Roopa in the final episode. The actress, best remembered as Draupadi in B.R. Chopra's Doordarshan serial Mahabharat, shared secrets about the world of showbiz and admitted being promised roles in return for sexual favours.

The 43-year-old Roopa, who gained acclaim for memorable roles in such films as Antarmahal and Chowrasta, also talked about her tough divorce and current relationship with a man 14 years younger than her.

"I have never hidden anything from the world. My life has been an open book. Thus, speaking the truth on the show was not that difficult," she said. Besides speaking about her tough childhood, Roopa said she regretted giving up her acting career twice for the sake of marriage.

Roopa appeared on the show along with her mother, two sisters and actor-friend Surendra Pal.

She spoke about her strained relationship with her husband of 14 years and how differences of opinion arose in her marriage mainly because of her erratic lifestyle and late shooting schedules.

She also spoke of her insecurities when her husband prevented her from meeting her son. Despite all this, she admitted, she was still in love with her ex-husband.

Incidentally, Roopa was one question away from winning Rs 25 lakh when she lost out, leaving the show without any cash prize. The question that proved to be her bane was if she really loved her live-in boyfriend Dibyendu. Roopa answered 'yes' but the polygraph test said otherwise.

Over the past three months, Sach Ka Samna, an Indian adaptation of the British reality show The Moment Of Truth, created a storm almost every week with shocking revelations common people made about their private lives, in a bid to win the coveted Rs 1-crore grand prize.

No one won a crore and the highest winner was Sunil Singh, a part-time yoga instructor with Bollywood Dreams, who won Rs 25 lakh by revealing everything from having sex for money to supplying boys to prospective clients and feeling up female yoga clients the wrong way.

The shocking tone of the show was set in the first episode itself when a school teacher-researcher named Smitha Mathai admitted harbouring desires to kill her alcoholic husband at one point in life.

It didn't come as a surprise that Sach Ka Samna invited criticism in Parliament.

Several women's organisations demanded the show be banned because they felt it distorted Indian family values with the revelations made on the show.

Star Plus, however, is resilient. The channel plans to bring it back next year.

Rajeev Khandelwal's Return Gift and Chenab Gandhi

Rajeev Khandelwal has a lot of preparation to do for his next two films, Sourabh Narang's Return Gift and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Chenab Gandhi. While for Bhansali's film he needs to get fluent in Urdu and familiar with the pre-Partition era, the preparation for Narang's film is even more complex and elaborate.

Rajeev can't wait for his reality show to end so he could embark on his big-screen preparations. Interestingly in spite of the show's popularity there's no mention of a second season for Rajeev. "For now, this is it," he says tersely.

For Return Gift in which Rajeev plays an Indian bureaucrat on a mission to Pakistan Rajeev will have to meet bureaucrats from both sides of the border to understand the intricacies of across-the-border diplomacy.

"I can't just go into the part unprepared. It's a character that has far-reaching relevance. I'll be meeting eminent bureaucrats to understand the workings of the Indian bureaucracy and the complex issue of Indo-Pak relations."

For all of this, Rajeev needs time off. Sach Ka Samna hardly gives him that space. In fact it now threatens to crowd him even more. Rajeev Khandelwal has a problem. And it's got to do with his hair. Before he goes into Sanjay Leela Bhansali's production of Chenaab Gandhi Rajeev has allotted dates to Sourabh Narang's Return Gift, which requires him to play an Indian civil servant on a diplomatic mission.

And everyone knows IAS officers are supposed to sport close-cropped hair. But Sanjay's film requires Rajeev to have very long hair.

Says Rajeev, "In fact one of the reasons why Mr. Bhansali selected me was because of my hair. I had grown it really long and curly for my role as a Goan beach bum in Peter Gaya Kaam Se. Mr. Bhansali saw that look and thought it was what he wanted for his assistant Vibhu Puri's film. That's how I was considered."

Having bagged the coveted role Rajeev was clearly told the hair remains.

Says Rajeev, "I was in a dilemma since Sourabh's film needed me to keep my hair short. And there was no time to cut my hair and grow it back. So I was left with no choice but to ask Sourabh to work his way around my hair."

Apparently Rajeev will now wear a cropped wig to look the Bureacrat's part.

Says Rajeev, "All I'll say is, I won't look wrong for the part."

Laughs Rajeev, "For the privilege of working with Mr Bhansali, I'd happily go bald. He's one of the best filmmakers of our country. Although he isn't directing Chenaab Gandhi his involvement with the project is full-on. I'll wrap my work in Return Gift and move on to Chenaab Gandhi. The thought of sharing screen space with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan so early in my career gives me goosebumps."

For Bhansali, Rajeev Khandelwal refuses to chop his locks
IANS  | Friday, 18 September , 2009, 12:17

His long curly locks helped him bag an important role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's production Chenab Gandhi. And now Rajeev Khandelwal refuses to crop them even though another film is going on the floors first and requires him to sport short hair.

"One of the reasons why Bhansali selected me was my hair," said Rajeev, who hosts the controversial game snow Sacch Ka Saamna.

"I had grown it really long and curly for my role as a Goan beach bum in Peter Gaya Kaam Se. Bhansali saw that look and thought it was what he wanted for his assistant Vibhu Puri's film. That's how I was considered," said the actor who earned critical acclaim for his performance in Aamir.

But there is a catch. Before Rajeev goes into Chenab Gandhi, he has allotted dates to Sourabh Narang's Return Gift which requires him to play an Indian civil servant on a diplomatic mission. And everyone knows bureaucrats are supposed to sport close-cropped hair.

"I was in a dilemma since Sourabh's film needed me to keep my hair short. And there was no time to cut my hair and grow it back. So I was left with no choice but to ask Sourabh to work his way around my hair," said Rajeev.

The actor is in no mood to compromise for his role in Bhansali's movie. "For the privilege of working with Bhansali, I'd happily go bald. He's one of the best filmmakers of our country. Although he isn't directing Chenab Gandhi, his involvement with the project is full-on.

"I'll wrap my work in Return Gift and move on to Chenab Gandhi. The thought of sharing screen space with Amitabh Bachchan so early in my career gives me goosebumps."
