The long Indian drought has caused many farmers to commit suicide in India. Family burdens, Loan burdens, starvation etc.

But no matter what happens suicide is never justified and often it does not solve the problem.
All these can be blamed on Global warming too. Govt to step in fast to help.

Half of India affected by drought

Nearly half of India's districts have been hit by drought that could affect the production of rice, the country's farm minister has said.

Sharad Pawar said 246 districts in 10 states had been declared as drought affected. India has some 600 districts.

Separately, authorities in southern Andhra Pradesh state say they are probing whether the suicides of 20 farmers are linked to the drought.

This monsoon season has brought 29% less rainfall than normal.

Rice production in the country could decline by 10 million tonnes this year because of the drought, Mr Pawar said.

India produced nearly 100 million tonnes of rice during 2008-2009, according to official figures.

"Due to the expected reduced production of rice, there could be pressure on availability and market price," he added.

'In-depth probe'

With food prices rising, Mr Pawar said the government was planning to release wheat and rice from its stocks in the open market to keep prices in check.

Leading economist and member in charge of food at India's Planning Commission Abhijit Sen told a newspaper that he did not "foresee a situation where we need to import food".

Separately, the government in Andhra Pradesh has announced an investigation into the suicides of 20 farmers in a little over a month.

The opposition parties have said the farmers were taking their lives because of the drought.

Chief minister YS Rajashekhara Reddy said officials were "conducting an in-depth probe into all the suicides by farmers to establish the reason".

Monsoon rains are critical to India's farm prospects, which account for a sixth of its economic output.

Up to 70% of Indians are dependent on farm incomes, and about 60% of India's farms depend on rains. Irrigation networks are dismissed by critics as inadequate.

The summer rains are crucial to crops such as rice, soybean, sugarcane and cotton.

Below normal monsoon rains have been responsible for the drought

Thats because all the water dumped in on the Midwest in 2008. The greatest Mississippi watershed flood since 1993.

While the less than generous monsoon results in a lot of failed crops and infertile land. The problem with India actually is that it is a very fertile country. One cannot say much for the land. But the population definitely is fertile. The land is the same and so is the yield. But the population is growing at 1.58% to 2.15%. Now we can farm more acres, but we also need room to house more people. Ultimately its the case of too many mouths to feed.

Suicide or not eventually some part of the population will die of malnourished. The caveat is that if farmers commit suicide, who will grow food. If no one grows food, more will go hungry and more will die.Ultimately everyone will die so, everyone can commit suicide.

However, instead of suicide how about we eliminate the mouths to feed. The already hungry who cannot food. The homeless, the jobless and all those who get fed for no return.

I think the world needs is an ultra secret hitmen crew that slowly terminates useless people and it seems they just disappeared from the face of the earth. If anyone questions whats going on have evangelicals announce that the rapture is here.

China practises a one child policy to control population. But it is not easly to implement in a democratic society.
the lower income people tend to  have several kids and it is very difficult for them.
With better education and higher literacy rate the population will also come down.

Let nature take care of the population problem. Water shortages, drought, plague, famine etc. will solve the problem for us. Better yet, Indians can migrate to other nations for more living space. That is the practical solution.

What you are proposing is absurd since cost of labour would go up, no more servants to wipe your ass, low fertility, greater tax burden etc.  Why do some people think that the white man has the solution to everything I wonder...

even though china practices one child policy, there are trying to loosen the restriction due to some people seeing that if this continues there will be problem for the chinese and chinese population in the future. one child policy is not that effective though, if you are further away from the capital the government control in china is less and in those areas people are having more than one child. i have a friend who are seven siblings from china and they were not taxed or anything.

water shortages, drought, plague, famine etc., might solve some problems but with these come another problems. migration is not that easy especially with those who do not have money, mostly these people will become illegal and this is clearly not the solution of giving the nation more living space. that is not a practical solution

with the development of economics inflation is inevitable, therefore the increase of the cost of labor is also inevitable. and no servant to wipe your ass is not really a big problem.

Illegal migration is already occuring. Plenty of people migrating within the country and even to neighbouring countries in this wonderful age of globalisation. Just look at those millions of bangladeshi's in India...   They have more brains than brown coconuts for sure...  Smile
