Yes it is very common with new movements and even in several religious groups power and politics plays a major role.

Tinkering with present rules and making changes can be dangerous as it provide avenues for people to go astray. For eg. the Catholic Church does not recognise divorce  and remarriage in any form. Other Christian groups allow this and so do several other religions. Who is right and who is wrong is subjective and arguable.

i'd say, no offense to the catholics and catholic church that even catholicism have gone astray from the basic doctrine of chrisitanity. for example, popes in the past who swore the life the celibacy in the past have mistresses and bas***ds.
yes but this seems to happen even among other religious groups as well.
There are always a few bad hats in all groups to give them a bad name.

I realise that the teachings are more important than the religion or the religious leader. A realised Guru or Teacher does not identify himself with his own body either.
the basic principle taught is "Be Good". That holds the key to everything.

but the conduct of these people are important because people look up to them and have high expectations for them. if these people, the religious groups leader are displaying bad conducts, then all the people will think that if their leaders themselves are doing all these misleading conduct, why can't they. i understand what you are trying to imply that the teachings of the religion are more important that the religion or the religious techers. nevertheless, in real life it is not that easy. people follow their leaders and reflect on the conduct of their leaders, yeah??

Yes if they do not practise what they preach no one will respect them.  All great teachers live by example.
