Why is India not a sporting power other than cricket

India is a huge country with a massive population. Our population is a resource for the nation. A country with the second largest population has won less Olympic gold medals than the United States swimmer, Michael Phelps, has won alone in a single edition of Olympics.

Indians, in general, are not as athletically built as the people of western countries. So it is only natural that we are not able to well in sports like football and hockey as they require much more stamina and fitness.

The main problem that is troubling us is poverty. A huge population is well below the poverty line. When people have no food to eat, how can they ever think of sports?

You will find that most of our sportsmen and sportswomen come from poor families. They either have no facilities or no motivation.

In 2007, the Indian hockey team won the Asia Cup and the Indian cricket team won the T20 world cup,  does anybody remember anything about the Asia Cup brought by our hockey team?  and hockey is supposed to be our national game

So you see, sports other than cricket do not elicit the same level of interest and response from the people. Therefore, it is no surprise that more and more people want to get into cricket and have no wish whatsoever to join any other sports

The question is why our Government(s) does not promote any other sports

its all politics. politicians dont invest much in sports. so new talent is not trained properly and they dont feel like making it a career unlike cricket. then they end up loosing matches and are no where in people which does not generate much excitement between the indian population. therefore this state of all the sports in india.
for example if we take for sania, before sania and a few others even tennis was not that popular. one success and that sports became popular in india too.

to do well in sports India must introduce the Communist System of rigrous training, to make up for the loss in physical size. Look at China for example, they really train hard.

Simple reason.

There is no such thing as national pride. Winning a few medals serves no practical purpose in a corrupt political system.
