Vishaka waited anxiously, all day long, for Dev to return from work.
Keshav had gone to the temple to finalize his program and give them his requirements for audio and Maji had gone along with him. Deepika had left for college.
Dadi dropped into her room and said, "Beta, we never realized that you sang so beautifully. How come you never sang all these days?"
Vishaka hung her head down and did not know what to say.
"Feel free to tell me, beta, don't feel shy."
"Well, Maji told me the day after the wedding that I cannot attend music lessons. I took that to mean that I could not sing either. I am sorry, Dadima. It was a big misunderstanding."
"Come here, beta," hugging Vishaka, Dadi continued, "You know, your Maji loves music. One of the reasons why we chose you for Dev was the fact that you sang. We never understood the reason why you never sang. Initially we thought that you were shy in your new home and we did not want to insist upon anything. Now, it seems such a waste, having missed 6 months of your singing. I hope you will continue your riyaz everyday from now on. Tell Birju to get the Tanpura out of the box in the store room. It may need new strings."
Vishaka looked up into Dadima's eyes and beamed. "Yes, Dadima, I will. Thank you."
"Accha, chalo, time to have lunch and plan the Prasad for next week's Samaroh at the temple. We need to get all the shopping done. Also call Maharaj ji to come and make the Prasad tomorrow."
Smiling, Vishaka went with Dadima towards the dining room planning for next week.
Dev finished up a meeting with his staff that handled different sites and called in the Chief Accounting Officer as he had to give some directions to handling banking and checks when he was out of the country. Then he consulted with his secretary and manager to give them further directions and explained his forthcoming absence for a week. His flight was confirmed in two days and he had to wrap up several unfinished business that needed his signature or decision.
He called home, "Dadi, I need to leave for the US the day after tomorrow. I spoke to Matt this morning and he needs me there to finalize a project. I have told the office to contact you for any pending bank related issue as you have signatory rights on the Trust account."
"How come you never told us about it, earlier? Hope all is well there. When will you be back?" wondered Dadima.
"I myself came to know of it this morning, Dadi. I will be gone for a week, Dadi, just a regular business trip. It will also give me time to wrap up my affairs there. When I came here 6 months back, I was planning on returning within 2 weeks. I did not know that I would not be back. Matt has taken care of most of my stuff. I still need to wrap up some loose ends," (and meet Ritu, if possible) replied Dev.
"Okay, beta. You need not explain everything to this old dadi. Do you want me to get started on the packing for you?"
"No, I will take care of it tomorrow. Can you please let Ma know about it?"
"Yes, and don't forget Vishaka. I will let her know also," teased Dadi.
"Yeah, her too. Okay, dadi, I will put down the phone. Will see you in the evening. Pranaam."
Dev leaned back on his chair and mentally went through the list of things that needed done before he left for the US. Yes, he needed to call Sastri ji and tell him too.
Devki picked up the phone on the third ring and enquired, "kaun?"
"Pranam, Maji. This is Dev. I am off for a week to the US on business. Just wanted to let you know and get your blessings before I left."
"How come so suddenly, damad babu?" enquired Devki.
"Well, it was decided just this morning, Maji. Is Babuji at home? I would like to talk to him also."
"Here, let me give him the phone. Suniye, Damad babu for you."
"Pranam, Babuji," said Dev.
"Sada sukhi raho, beta. How are you and Vishaka?" asked Babuji.
"We are fine, babuji. Today, for the first time we heard Vishaka sing. We have Keshav visiting us and he made her sing."
"That is wonderful news, beta. What is Keshav doing in Delhi? He lives in Mumbai."
"He came here to sing in a week long Vasanth Samaroh organized by our Chattarpur Mandir Seva Samiti. Our Trust is the primary sponsor for the event."
"Well, that is good. Keshav is like a brother to Vishaka. They grew up together, fighting with each other."
" Yes, that is what I heard. Well, I need to finish some work here. I just wanted to say my pranams before I left for the US. I will get back next week and talk to you."
"US? What for?" asked Sastri ji.
" Business, Babuji. I will ask Vishaka to talk to you later. Pranam."
"Khush raho and may you have a successful trip," replied Sastri ji and ended the call.
