Typosquatting is indulged in by people who want to divert traffic to their websites. They do this by slightly changing the spelling of famous websites in the hope that netizens will misspell and come to their site
It is a lot like purchasing a domain name that is a variation of a popular domain name with the expectation that some of the traffic for the original site will stray to theirs.
This is a dangerous trend because it is indulged in mostly by pornographers. Unsuspecting netizens are tricked into visiting their websites because that's how they earn their money — by attracting traffic.
Such methods can also be detrimental to a company — if prospective customers are diverted to porn sites they could form an unfavorable opinion about the company.
In the United States, as part of the Amber Alert legislation package, typosquatting is now a crime. Porn network czar John Zuccarini was charged under the new typosquatting law by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and pleaded guilty in 2004. He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
He is the first person charged under the typosquatting law. Adopted as part of the Amber Alert legislation, the law dealing with 'Misleading Domain Names on the Internet' is a powerful tool in stopping typosquatting.
In India there are no provisions under the Information Technology Act 2000 to deal with typosquatting.
We have a fundamental right of speech. But what are the restrictions that have to be exercised over the internet. Since the internet offers anonymity, isn't it possible for people to post whatever they want, without any restrictions, over the internet and get away with it?
