I recently read The god of small things by Arundhati Roy it is a really nice book set in Kerala with a indian backdrop. There are other nice ones like:
-Fasting and feasting- Anita Desai
- Cinnamon Gardens-Shyam Selvadurai
- Family Matters- Rohinton Mistry
- A fine balance- Rohinton Mistry
- Sister of my heart - Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

I second those. Rohinton Mistry is a fascinating writer. You might also want to try out his book "Such a long Journey". It's a touching story, but what really stands out is the political backdrop and the ironic tension within the family.

There's also the book called "What the Body Remembers" by Shauna Singh Baldwin. It's a remarkable novel that tells the tale of a Sikh landowner, and his wives under the backdrop of the partion of 1947. It's a topic that's been done to death yet Baldwin manages to put a new refreshing spin to it.
