Today finally it was announced that this little car will be on the roads in April 2009. Good. But the biggest tragedy is that when a car of this sort was announced last year no one expected that we will have to wait for it to be delivered to us through lottery. How come? A man has to go to the bank, buy a form for 500.00  Rs. and leave a deposit of 70000.00 Rs. and then wait for the lucky draw! What a joke. I think that there will be at least a million applicants for this car which means that the company before delivering the car already has in its account 7 thousand crores free of any interest. This company of Ratan Tata wants people to finance them for manufacturing this car. How intelligent.  And what is the guarantee that this car wil be available to everyone? Maybe the first lottery winner will sell it in the blackmarket for double the amount I dont think that this is a good marketing strategy. God save India from such capitalists.

If the Tata organisation is not capable of facing the demand for the product which it has announced last year in India and all over the world (in Europe it is being offered  for 5000 Euros which means four time the price in India) then there is a lapse in the planning system of such a big organisation. When this car was first exhibited the slogan was (Garibon ka sapna) a dream of the poor man. But here things are not the same. We first have to deposit the money without any guarantee of getting the car for sure. Have to wait for a lottery. Poor people in India are an easy target which Mr. Ratan Tata's organisation will take full advantage of.

Hello Gauri. This is not the question of demand and supply. This is fooling the innocent public as it happened in the allotment of Delhi Flats. People will be giving their money not know whether they will be getting a Nano Car for which they have been waiting. Supply and demand arises in mass production cases......like the petrol exporting countries making good of the demand of crude oil in the past years.Smile

Pre-booking is a very valid and reasonable tactic used by manufacturers to sell certain products.

1) It helps forecast numbers. The number of pre-bookings help manufacturers foresee how much they will need to buy.

2) It obtains capital from customers instead of high interest borrowing. This keeps costs low and allows the company to reinvest within production.

3) It insulates the manufacturer from unforeseen market conditions.

It actually sounds fair and intelligent business stratergy. Booking prirorities can be easily manipulated, gol mal hai bhai sab gol maal hai. I am not saying that car might be sold by lucky winner in gray market but still lottery is is good idea. From the different angle, overall boost to economy...how? more spending in buying sweets/nariyal, visit to mandirs for prayers, astrologers / plamists/pandits business boom...lol

Hello all. Pre-booking is ok. But asking for more than half the price and that too without any guarantee that they will get the car. That is not fair. If they say yes, we will take a month or two or three or anything for sure, then asking for a partpayment in advance could be justified.

This is purely my opinion. Talking of business tactics, yes this is a good business trick. Also as Raj5000 mentions, this is an opening to other expenses which will boost the market, well said.

Do we really need the nano in our already overcrowded streets ? Nano is supposed to B the dream car at an affordable rate for common man ! But wouldnt it be better if the means of public transport are inproved to a degree that it becomes safe, convenient to use. That would take care of problems of road congestion, road rage, pollution, scarce natural resource-petrol !
