After a Dull friday, it looked as if Billo will be a failure, but with a good performance in Saturday and Sunday, things have changed.
With 14 cr in its kitty during the weekend, the movie is looking forward to a cool 20 cr first week.
The movie needs 32 cr for recovery and 46-47 cr to be a hit, according to its distribution prices.
So as long as movie has decent trending it should be safe and a surprise success after a bad start.

Slow but steady

Much was expected from this week's release, Billu, since Shah Rukh Khan has produced it and also plays a longish cameo.

There was Midas man

Priyadarshan at the helm too. But going by the weekend collections, the film should be an above average grosser at best.
On Friday, Billu opened with a collection of 30 to 40 per cent for the morning shows.

Following word-of-mouth publicity and positive reviews, collections picked up. On Saturday it was between 60 and 70 per cent. Evening shows did better business. Sunday was encouraging as evening shows in many multiplexes were houseful.

Yesterday, 12.30 pm show of Billu at New Empire theatre was called off suddenly. The viewers who were already seated in the theatre were shocked when suddenly an announcement was made 10 minutes after the film started that the show has to be cancelled.

One of the viewers who had gone to watch the film said, "There were about 30 people seated in the balcony and 50 in the stall. We wondered if the show was cancelled because there weren't too many viewers. However, we later got to know that there was some technical problem due to which the show had to be called off. The manager of the theatre apologised for the unexpected turn of events. They also refunded the ticket money."

Umrekar, the manager, of New Empire theatre confirmed the incident and said, "We had to cancel the show because there was a problem with the film's sound due to which the dialogues could not be heard clearly. We had to call an engineer to fix the problem. Since he took some time to arrive and we did not want the audience to wait lest they get impatient and create a ruckus, we refunded the ticket money."§id=97&contentid=2009021620090216150042986129cdb95§xslt=

'Billu' slow despite good feedback

February 18, 2009 - 09:20 IST

First LUCK BY CHANCE, which starred Hrithik Roshan in an extended cameo. Now BILLU, which stars Shah Rukh Khan in an extended special appearance. Compare it with a KRRISH or an OM SHANTI OM, which were riding on the respective stars' popularity. It is evident that the viewer of today can segregate a special appearance and a full-fledged role.

A few decades ago, when Amitabh Bachchan ruled the roost, the viewer knew how dissimilar DON, SHOLAY and AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY were from BEMISAAL, ALAAP and JURMANA. They knew that the first three films were out-and-out masala fares, while the last three films were meaningful/middle of the road cinema.

Talking of LUCK BY CHANCE and BILLU, the viewers knew, much before their release, that the films belonged to other actors [Farhan Akhtar and Irrfan Khan, respectively] and that's one of the reasons why the two films didn't fetch a thunderous start, something that you generally expect from an SRK or a Hrithik Roshan starrer.

There's another reason why BILLU started slow. Generally -- there's data to prove it -- family sagas/socials start slow, but once the word of mouth is favourable, the business shows an escalation with each passing day. In the past, Ravi Chopra's BAGHBAN, Sooraj R. Barjatya's VIVAH, Aamir Khan's TAARE ZAMEEN PAR and Aditya Chopra's RAB NE BANA DI JODI had a lukewarm start at several places, but the films gathered steam gradually.

A similar trend was noticed in the case of BILLU, which had a slow Friday, a robust Saturday and an excellent Sunday. But the film fell on the 'dreaded' Monday [almost every producer has started fearing Mondays, hence the term 'dreaded'].

SRK discussed the price he has sold BILLU at, on my show -- Rs. 35 cr. + Rs. 2 cr. for promotion -- which means that the price is below Rs. 40 cr., definitely not Rs. 50 cr. [a few badly informed sources have been spreading this lie]. One is curious to know if the India theatrical business coupled with the revenue generated from Overseas [good], Satellite and Home Video would ensure recovery for the investors.

BILLU is a well-made film and the general feedback is very positive, so let's see if there's an escalation in business in days to come. Let's wait for a few days more before we pass judgement!

It's a good movie but I expected Irrfan Khan to do better especially on the last part, meaning showing more emotions towards SRK but it was quite justified because he went through a lot because of Sahir.
It's a good movie, I loved SRK's bits and that song, Ae Aa Aao with all the SRK scenes from his previous films, wonderful. I got goosebumps during that song.
The ending was superb also, I was crying when SRK was giving that speech and Rajpal Yadav brought back me a smile at the end.
I hope this movie becomes this year's first big hit but it will take time because things aren't great worldwide, somewhere because of finance, somewhere because of safety...
