Each year a new batch of actors and actresses try and make their mark in the halls of Hindi filmdom. Though some go unnoticed, each year there are some performances that stand out and you know you are seeing the start of a something special: an actor or actress who is destined to be a star! Here is our list of the 10 who we think shined the brightest in their debut films!

10. Harman Baweja

He may not have had the best time at the box office with his debut film, but Harman Baweja certainly made his presence felt in his Dad's launch pad Love Story 2050 with Priyanka Chopra. The newcomer, despite being part of a project that didn't match too well with what audiences like, has a streak of releases lined up, so there has to be something special in this young talent. After all, it's not every day you remain on the "to be watched" list despite delivering a box office dud. Well Harman Baweja, we certainly hope your future films redeem you at the box office, and Ajitpal's Victory would be a great place to start!
9. Rajeev Khandelwal

It isn't every day that a newcomer carries the burden of a movie solely on his shoulders and pulls it off with ease, but that's why Rajeev Khandelwal is on this list. After a streak of successful television shows, Rajeev landed the role of Aamir Ali in Aamir and life hasn't been the same for the talented, good-looking actor. As word of mouth promotion began for Aamir, the film moved on to be remembered as one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year! Rajeev, we hope you're here to stay, because actors of such a breed are becoming more and more rare.

8. Asin Thottumkal

Every year we have a group of newcomers who get what we call a dream debut or a magical launch. This year, Southern beauty Asin Thottumkal belongs to this unique and lucky group, debuting in one of the most anticipated releases of the century, Ghajini. After the success of her original performance in the Tamil version, Asin was then chosen to reprise her role for the Hindi version and, as expected, wooed the audiences, the industry and Aamir Khan effortlessly. Now with projects co-staring Salman Khan, the talented and beautiful actress is here to stay and definitely someone to watch out for.

7. Prateik Babbar

His debut is perhaps one of the lesser anticipated of the year, because his first film was with Aamir Khan's nephew Imran Khan. However, a talent actor never fails to leave a strong impression, and that is what Prateik did in Abbas Tyrewala's Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. As he is the son of the late Smita Patil and veteran Raj Babbar, acting is in his blood and it wasn't a surprise that he emerged as a scene stealer in JTYJN… As he is rumoured to have signed Kiran Rao's debut film, audiences look forward to seeing what this hidden gem does next!

6. Anurag Sinha

It is rare that an actor gets a debut role that is tailor made to show off as much talent as possible. Anurag Sinha got this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and seized it with both hands when he debuted in Subhas Ghai's Black and White. His experience in theatre and short films plus his formal training made him more than capable for the role. He floored all with the intensity in his eyes as he portrayed the difficult role. Now with his talent unleashed and a world of options open to him, everyone sits with bated breath to see what he does next.

5. Prachi Desai

Known and loved for her role as Bani on the television show Kasamh Se, this young actress' debut in films was one that fans could not wait to see. Starring as Sakshi, Farhan Akhtar's wife in the mega hit Rock On!!, Prachi seamlessly transitioned from small screen to big and proved her talent and then some! She brought a wonderful quality to her role, and her chemistry with Farhan was fabulous! This young actress, we are sure, will give us many more fine performances in the future.

4. Mughda Godse

The model-turned-actress made her debut in a film about the fashion world and she made everyone sit up and take note. Her performance as Janet in Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion was praised universally. Her naturalness on screen, such that she looked like she had been acting all her life, impressed not only her director and cast, but critics and audiences everywhere. With such an amazing start we are sure this beauty, a super sweet person in real life, will go far! We can't wait to see her in her next film!

3. Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma came out of nowhere with the debut of a lifetime. A former model, Anushka auditioned for Aditya Chopra, who was looking for his next lead heroine opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. She bagged the highly coveted role and ran away with it. Anushka wasn't just a showpiece: she acted very well alongside one of the biggest stars in the industry, earning very good reviews for her performance. She's got a bright future ahead of her as well, having signed two more Yash Raj projects. We hope to see a lot more of her!

2. Imran Khan

Coming from a filmi family that includes not only Mansoor Khan but also actor extraordinaire Aamir Khan, the debut for this young man was the talk of the town. Everyone could not wait to see Imran Khan. From the very first photo he captured the hearts of fans everywhere and then the movie released and a star was born! His performance as Jai aka Rats was excellent and his talent showed through, not only in the funny parts but in the quiet parts as well. His chemistry with co-star Genelia D'Souza was amazing and everyone fell in love along with Meow and Rats. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na was a huge hit and the reviews for his performance were raves. Kidnap, his second film, did not fare as well at the box office, but his performance was highly praised. Coming up, we will see him in Luck and Aamir Khan's next production, Delhi Belly! With the depth of his talent, we are sure that he will match his famous uncle as a one of the greats one day!

1. Farhan Akhtar

He first made his mark in Bollywood as a director of such exceptional films as Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya, and Don: The Chase Begins Again. Farhan then decided to try acting and made his debut in the brilliant film Rock On!!. Not only did he portray Aditya Shroff, lead singer of Magik, he also literally was the lead singer, singing all of the songs for the soundtrack. He was pitch perfect as an actor and a singer! He gave a real depth to the role, and his performance was praised by critics with words like phenomenal, revelation, and superb! We will next see him in Zoya Akhtar's Luck By Chance releasing on January 30th, and from the promos it looks like he is going to bat this one out of the park as well. We know we can't wait to see all of his films in the future, whether he is in front of or behind the camera, and are sure audiences will agree!

There is one film that we all wish we could have included on most of our lists, but since it is not a Bollywood film we felt we had to leave it out. However, you will see it pop up as a special mention on several of the lists and this is the first one we felt we had to add it to. A special mention must be given to Dev Patel's amazing debut and outstanding performance as Jamal in Slumdog Millionaire - he has been nominated for a Screen Actor's Guild Award! This is one actor to keep your eye on because he is going to go very far!

There you have our picks of the 10 Plus One Best Newcomers of 2008! Each of these fine actors and actresses brought something special to the roles they portrayed, and we look forward to enjoying the next character they choose to entertain us with. We can't wait to see them all!!
