NAGPUR: The country may love the antics of little Anandi in the soap 'Balika Vadhu,' but the state government is not amused. The state labour
department has served notices on leading TV production agencies for subjecting child actors to a gruelling schedule not permitted by the law.
While talking to TOI, newly appointed labour minister Nawab Malik said the use of child actors had become very common in serials. However, producers are blissfully unmindful of the rules under the Child Labour Act and the Juvenile Justice Act. "Children can act in serials and films. But they cannot work for more than four hours, a rule which TV production agencies hardly seem to follow," he said. The producers have been given a week's time to reply to the notice sent by the labour commissioner.
Giving the example of Balika Vadhu, Malik said the girl playing Anandi's character did not have basic attendance in school. "Her principal has told us that she has not attended school after the start of the serial," he noted.
The minister said it was brought to his notice that child actors were on the sets for more than 8-10 hours.
He said the state government was not interested in stopping the telecast of serials using child actors. "We don't intend to obstruct the telecast. But the production agencies should know the rules and follow them," he said. Asked about the action possible against production agencies, Malik said the law provided for penalty and imprisonment from six months to two years.
