No Kidding

According to many, very young children acting in films and TV serials can be construed as child labour. The labour ministry is looking into it

Talented child artistes in Bollywood can now dream big and aim for laurels. The growing popularity of these young stars has come to the notice of the Labour Ministry and the Labour Department Commissioner of Maharashtra Upmanyu Chatterjee is currently in Delhi to meet the Labour Minister. During the two day meet on labour laws, they will also discuss if children acting in films or television will be part of child labour or not.

To know more about this we contacted Dinesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Federation of Western India Cine Employee (FWICE). He says, "All child artistes are members of Cine and TV Artists association. At present we have members from the age of four to 14-year-olds. If there are younger children and are acting then they have to become members. The association makes sure that all the child artistes are treated well. Till date there have been no complaints about ill treatment since most producers take child artistes very seriously as they become their responsibility. At times, producers even keep one or two spot boys or may be a helper particularly for the child. It depends on the producer or channel if they want to provide any additional facilities."

When contacted, Ashwini Yardi, Programming Head of Colours, says, "The channel has three shows in which children are our main leads. We make sure that the child is not stressed out because of the shoot. We ask one of the parents to be with the child on the sets, all the time. We have also arranged for one teacher and a psychiatrist."

The entertainment industry has embraced the new-age marketing mantra of selling to and through children. Taare Zameen Par is a case in point. Never before had the industry taken films about children as seriously as it did this.

In order to weed out confusion about children being part of child labour we contacted advocate Benny Joseph, who said, "As of now children acting in films and TV is not child labour. It is taken as appreciation of anybody's art and talent."

To know the perspective of a child actor we spoke to Sparsh Khanchandani, an eight-year-old child and the protagonist of Uttran and perhaps one of the youngest lead actresses of the TV world. "I love coming on the sets. I want to be an IAS officer. My doctor on the sets told me that I will have to study for eight years to become one. So whenever I get time on the sets I just study and make notes. My teachers are happy with my overall progress."

Defined by class

While class has long been a determinant of what one sees on Indian television, it is only just making a self-conscious appearance in the Hindi general entertainment genre. For some months now, the shrewd Rajasthani matriarch Masa in "Balika Vad hu" has been belittling the families her daughters-in-law come from. When Anandi returns from a visit to her parents she is told, "oh dear, you've lost your brightness. Don't get the same level of nutrition in your parent's home, do you?" The older son's teenage bride has been "bought", after paying off her father's debts, and she is unfailingly reminded of that. Every now and then Masa will tell a visitor expansively, "all my daughters-in-law are from poor homes". And will then turn frosty when somebody from that humbler universe presumes to visit her improbably grand haveli.

A different formula

Now, emboldened by the success of "Balika Vadhu", Colours has introduced another saga which is somewhat removed from the Ekta Kapoor formula of yore. There is a rich, over-painted woman here too, and a dream mansion untouched by realism. But the story revolves around Little Miss Two Front Teeth, the daughter of a housemaid who cannot understand why some children have large birthday cakes and all the toys in the world, while she has the pavement as her playground.

To make sure you do not miss the message, all subtleties have been tossed out of the window. Early on, the mother asks daughter Ichcha (desire) fearfully, "tu itne bare sapne kyon dekhti hai?" (Why do you dream so big? I begin to feel very small before you, I can never fulfil your dreams. Why can't you be happy with what you have?) She plays a terrified maid stereotype, while the mistress of the mansion sports considerable gold plating in her daily attire, and not a shred of political correctness in her speech. Another stereotype, which belongs to another age.

Ichcha's playmate is the mollycoddled daughter of the Thakurain, named Tapasya (penance) and their friendship forms the basis of a class confrontation which will play out in the next few episodes. Unlike "Balika Vadhu", there is no nuanced acting here. The saving grace is the child actor Sparsh who plays Ichcha, alternating between shrillness, cheerful cockiness, and bewilderment at a world which is beyond her understanding. Her eyes do the acting and occasionally project a terrifying deadness.

There is heavy symbolism in the names of the two young protagonists and in that of the serial: "Uttaran", which means cast off, as in clothes.

Given the success of the film "Slumdog Millionaire" and Aravind Adiga's Booker prize winning The White Tiger, possibly somebody in the industry thought that television's middle class constituency was ready to have its conscience stirred. One is about, well, a slum dog who wins a game show prize, the other is a servant's eye view of India's ruling class.

The irony is that the rest of the fare on television, particularly on the news channels, affirms every day that class defines the India you see on television. It was so glaring a determinant of the news in Mumbai's November attacks that a considerable part of the subsequent analysis focused on it. And the reminders are still coming. A still photograph of the Chhatrapati Shivaji terminal taken in the immediate aftermath of the attack is so evocative with its little puddles of luggage and blood, that you wonder how any news organisation with a sense of moment could have passed up making this picture the definitive visual statement of 26/11, rather than a smoke billowing Taj hotel.

Imbalance in coverage

At the time of writing, NDTV is playing over and over again a tribute to the martyrs of 26/11 and, not surprisingly, only the senior police officers figure. The same day The Hindu has a four column story on page 12 on Assistant Sub Inspector Tukaram Ombale who took a spray of bullets when he rushed to intercept the lone captured terror accused. His wife tells the reporter that she wishes he had got more recognition. You can see why: his picture and name don't figure in the roll call of police martyrs that TV channels play over and over again. Hemant Karkare's wife Kavita, who figures the same day on the Hindustan Times front page, is unlikely to have that complaint.

As the year ends and the reviews begin, television sinking low in 2008 with the Aarushi murder case will doubtless be recalled. But much more for the affront the coverage became to the parents of the dead girl, and the muddying of their reputation. Far less will be written, let me wager, on how months of coverage of a double murder could focus so single-mindedly on TV and in print, on just one of the victims, as if the other did not exist.

Small Ichhki's Big Plans

It has been just 23 days since she made her appearance on television and Uttaran's Ichhki has already grabbed everyone's attention. Sparsh Khanchandani plays Ichcha in Uttaran is giving a tough competition to Anandi of Balika.

"Sparsh is a God gifted child," mom Sarita says, "She is very active and is always very curious to know about things as her character in the show. Ichcha in real life too is very inquisitive and talkative."

Reel life Ichhki is very close to her on screen friend Tapasya played by Ishita and the two have a gala time on the sets together.

"During the breaks, Sparsh is often seen doing masti with her on screen friends Tapasya, Taklu and Baju," says her mom. Similar to the on screen equation which Ichha shares with her mom, the eight year old is very attached to her real mumma too.

Considering the recent furor about child artists being made to work very long hours and not having a proper childhood, Sparsh's mother says that they are very strict about ensuring that she has a proper upbringing.

"Sparsh goes to school regularly in the morning from 7:30am-1:00pm. It's only in the evening she has to go for her shoot and then Saturdays and Sundays are off for her. On the way from home to the sets, she sleeps in the car," informs her mother.

Sparsh has not taken any acting classes but still she doesn't face any problems with her scenes and dialogues.

"There are times when she tells the directorji too that iss line ko main aise bolu toh aur achcha lagega na. It really amazes me!" exclaims mother Sarita.

Sparsh has always been an all rounder as used to actively participate in all extra curricular activities at school. "She used to participate in poem recitations, story telling and various other activities and in academics too, she has always been a topper," says a proud mother.

Sparsh resides in Ulhasnagar and goes to school in Ambernath. The set of Uttaran is in Vikhroli and it's her mom who escorts her everyday from home to school and then later to the sets.

"One of my friends told me about this, Sparsh gave the auditions and with in 2 days we got the news that she is selected," says Sparsh's mother when asked about how her daughter got the role.

This is how ever not her first show. Sparsh Khanchandani was seen in a very small role in a Sahara One daily Mera Sasural and was also seen in a movie called Red Alert where she played the daughter of Sunil Shetty and Bhagyashree.

One-track mind!

It started off well, but now after so many months there hardly seems to be any movement in the story.
A still from Uttaran More Pics

We are talking about the serial Uttaran, which has a story surrounding the life of a little girl, who has big dreams.

The show was among top ten on the TRP charts a couple of months ago, but not anymore. And one of the main reasons, we think, for this is that the story just seems to be revolving around one track.

A show needs a number of tracks or else it can get very repetitive. In the case of Uttaran even if one has to miss two weeks and then come back to watch the show, you'd hardly feel you've missed anything because it's the same old thing happening. Just reminds of another TV show Kayamath, a love triangle, where even if you'd return to watch it two months later you'd realise nothing's changed! It's still the same problems between the couple and the vamp trying to separate them. Oh no!

Sreejita's scared to step into Sparsh's shoes

Sreejita De's next role is playing teenage Ichchki, taking over from Sparsh Manchandani, in Uttaran. But the actress is worried to take over from an "audience favourite", scared that she won't be able to live up to viewers' expectations.

SREEJITA, the popular Annu of Annu Ki Ho Gayi Waah Bhai Waah (Star One), who was last seen as Roshni in Bandhan Saat Janmon Ka (Colors), will be playing Ichchki next month when Uttaran undergoes a progression.
Sreejita says, "I am very excited but at the same time, I am very scared too. Sparsh, who plays Ichcha now, is excellent in terms of acting. At such a young age, she is so popular and extremely talented. That's why I am scared; she has become an audience favorite!"

Having followed a few episodes of Uttaran, Sreejita is completely impressed by Sparsh's acting. "She's a brilliant actor. I'll have to study her character a lot, especially her mannerisms. She's very innocent and that is clearly reflected in her acting. It will be a very challenging job to portray her character."

The actress only took up the role because it filled certain criteria that she had. She explained, "I was very particular about three things: first that I wanted to do either a Star or Colors show, second was that I wanted to play the lead role and lastly, I wanted to star on a show that had a primetime slot. I got all these things covered with this role; hence I had no reason to say 'no'."

She auditioned for the role of Ichchki but nearly ended up playing Tapasya. Sreejita says, "I auditioned for Ichcha but then they called me and told me that my face resembled Tapasya more. Finally, I am playing Ichcha only."

Talking about Vaishali Thakkar, who plays Ichcha's mother, she says, "She used to play Bharati on Hum Sab Ek Hain. I used to follow the show regularly when I was in Standard 6. I've been her fan ever since then! She's a great actress and I am very obliged to play her onscreen daughter."

Sreejita will start shooting for Uttaran on May 5. Her entry will be telecast after May 10. Rashmi Desai of Pari Hoon Main will be playing teenage Tapasya.

Uttaran airs every Monday to Thursday at 10pm on Colors.

New Tapasya-Ichcha on Uttaran

Tapasya and Ichcha are growing up on Uttaran. The show is poised to take a leap post IPL (which ends later this month) and the two little girls on the show, Tapasya and Ichcha, are slated to become teenagers.

Rashmi Desai will play teen Tapasya on Uttaran. She went in to audition for the role of Ichcha, who is the daughter of Damini the maid. But Rashmi says she got the other role instead "because I have rich and royal looks." She added that "my attitude is very arrogant. That's why they picked me to play the role of Tapasya instead."
Desai has had a bit of TV experience before and played the lead in Pari Hoon Main on Star One. Uttaran airs on Colors.

She said that she liked the show and regularly followed it. "I also met Ishita and Sparsh (who currently play the roles of Tapasya and Ichcha)" she said. "My inspiration for taking up the role is that, through this character, I will play many shades."

Rashmi added that the role would be daunting because the girls were very popular with viewers and keeping the interest in the serial going would be a big responsibility on the new girls.

Speaking of similarities she had with the character, she said, "I am the only girl in my family and I'm very pampered just like Tapasya. The only difference between me and the character is that Tapasya shares her things with Ichcha. I could never do that!"

Uttaran is about the Thakur family, whose daughter is friends with the maid's daughter. Jogi Thakur (Ayub Khan) accidentally kills the maid's husband and then takes it upon himself to raise the child.

Srijita De is slated to play the role of Ichcha. Srijita played Annu in Annu Ki Ho Gai Wah Bhai Wah, on Star One.

Srijita and Rashmi will begin shooting for the serial from the May 11.

Growing pains: Ishita sad to leave Uttaran

Uttaran (Colors) is heading towards a leap which means that child actors Sparsh Manchandani (Ichcha) and Ishita Panchal (Tapasya) will soon make way for their adult versions played by Srijita De and Rashmi Desai respectively. However, unfazed by being replaced on the show, 11-year-old Ishita is only worried about missing her friend Sparsh.

She says, "Sparsh is a very dear friend of mine and I'll miss her terribly. I met her for the first time during the auditions but we didn't get to know each other then. After shooting began, we became very good friends. In fact, now we are like sisters. We hope that both of us get an opportunity to work together again."
The young star is determined to keep in touch with Sparsh, saying, "We will both continue to meet on the sets. I'll go to her place and she will also visit me. Just because we aren't shooting for Uttaran, it doesn't mean that we won't meet each other."

As for her experience on Uttaran, Ishita feels blessed. She adds, "Uttaran has given me everything. It feels great to have gotten to play Tapasya and showcase my talent. I am very thankful to God that I got the opportunity to work here; it is one of the best shows on TV."

Ishita is also going to miss being pampered on the sets. "Everyone here gives us whatever we ask for. We even have our own kitchen sets that we play with when we are not shooting. I will miss everyone and all the masti we do here" she quips.

Both Ishita and Sparsh are still shooting for the show and have no idea when the leap will take place. Even so, they've both decided to have a blast on their last day. "We decided that we are going to cut a huge cake on the sets and spray fake snow on everybody. We will have lots of fun," she says.

As for other projects, little Ishita says she has no time to even think about more work. "There is nothing else as of now. Now toh we are busy shooting for Uttaran," she signs off.

Uttaran airs every Monday to Thursday at 10pm on Colors.

All work and no play for Ayub

It's been quite a while since Ayub Khan's cricket team, Actorletics has been seen on the field. This is mainly due to his busy shooting schedule that's not allowing the actor to take time out for his cricket team.

Ayub tells us, "Our team is very enthusiastic and very lively but the problem is that I am doing Uttaran, which is a daily. The schedule has been really hectic and I've not had any time to spare. However, we are planning to get back on the field very soon."
He adds that it has become increasing difficult to play because the matches are held outside the city. He says, "That becomes a major hurdle, but hopefully we'll soon be playing an international match in London."

Talking about the team's journey, he says, "Till now, we've played 40 matches which include three tournaments. Out of that, we've even won one. It's going great. The team has been really supportive and very enthusiastic."

Ayub tells us that despite shooting for his daily, he manages to practice for his team. He adds, "When we have matches, I've to take just three to four days to practice and that is not very difficult. Even during practice, playing a match is not that difficult. We reach for the practice at around seven in the morning, practice for four hours and then leave for our shooting."

But he also agrees that organising matches takes a lot of commitment. "Basically, there are three of us who handle the organisation: Faisal Khan, Rizvi and I. We've organised two sets of outfits, one (coloured) for day and one (white) for night. For every match, we have to provide the entire team with everything. Arranging this itself takes a lot of energy. But we have a great time and as soon as we all get time, we will get back on the field," he signs off.

Srijita De out of Uttaran

According to sources, Srijita De, who was finalised to portray the role of teen Ichcha after the leap in Uttaran (Colors), will now be replaced on the channel's insistence.

According to their contract, the new cast was not supposed to reveal details about their characters or the show before its official launch. But Srijita could not abide by the rules. The source says, "Srijita gave interviews to the media right after she came to know that she had been finalised. Surprisingly, even the production house is unaware of the entire situation. But at the end of the day, it is the channel's call."

The source adds, "Srijita was finalised as the new 'Ichcha' in the show. Though she didn't start shooting, she shot for the promos with Rashmi Desai, who will be seen portraying the role of Tapasya after the show takes a leap."

When contacted, a curt Srijita De refused to comment, just saying, "I am not aware of this."

Producer Pintoo Guha was also surprised and said, "Is it? I really don't know anything about this. I need to confirm it with the channel."
