And amongst the one's who succeed not all of them have a backing or a mentor waiting to launch them. Some of them do not even belong to Bombay. Here is a collection of such contemporary artists who hail from small towns but are making a mark in Bollywood.
Irfaan Khan This NSD actor hailing from Jaipur has already carved a niche for himself, after delivering mind-boggling performances in the Hollywood film Warrior (which fetched him the BAFTA award), Haasil, and lately, Maqbool. Winning critical acclaim nationwide, this Khan with a difference knew early on that he wanted to be an actor.

Manoj has worked his way up from small TV roles to small character roles in films like Bandit Queen till Satya happened and Manoj became synonymous with just one name Bhiku Mhatre.

Soldier was a step forward towards stardom. Kya Kehna clinched her fate. She is one of the most successful actresses of our times and a big contender for the place in the zenith.

Coming from Dehradun, Udita made quite an impact with her debut in Paap. She started out as a model in Delhi and there was no looking back. Bollywood has beckoned her big time and she will be seen in many movies in 2005.

Ms. Sherwat needs no introduction- she was the biggest newsmaker in 2003. As per what she says, she belongs to Rohtak a very small town in Haryana. She has emerged as the "alternate heroine" of Bollywood.

Born in Jabalpur; must admit Arjun Rampal has gone places. After being spotted by ace designer Rohit Bal in a discotheque, Arjun's life has taken him from ramp to the ever so coveted Bollywood. Planning to go international as a model he met Ashok Mehta while shooting for an ad film, who offered him a film. Arjun read the script 8 times before signing Moksha. He has been to acting school only for 15 days!
