Review: 'Delhi-6'

BY FRANK LOVECE | Special to Newsday
February 20, 2009

(2 1/2 STARS) (unrated)

PLOT A first-generation Indian-American discovers his roots and finds love in Delhi amid Hindu and Muslim tensions.

CAST Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Om Puri

LENGTH 2:20

PLAYING AT Broadway Multiplex Cinemas, Hicksville; Farmingdale Multiplex Cinemas

BOTTOM LINE Despite montages set to songs, and a Times Square fantasy sequence, this is a drama of cultural identity and not a bright, bouncy Bollywood musical. Some insights and authenticity, but no "Slumdog Millionaire."

Departing from the Bollywood recipe of everything-but-the-kitchen-sink cinema, "Delhi-6" instead addresses the cultural confusion of a New York desi (first-generation Indian-American) - spending time in India with his dying grandmother. Except for a beguiling musical sequence set in Times Square, its several songs play under montages.

Thirty-something Roshan (major Indian star Abhishek Bachchan) dutifully takes his dying dadi (Waheeda Rahman) home to the old, walled part of Delhi - a neighborhood known by its postal code as Delhi-6. Half-Muslim, half-Hindu and all American, Roshan can't help but patronizingly clod his way through the neighbors' ancient traditions - and less ancient ones, such as bullying police slapping people around and taking bribes.

The neighborliness subsides after a rash of burglaries and mysterious sightings. They're initially blamed on the mythical "Black Monkey," and the media has fun with it at first. But when the local Muslims realize they're the main target, half-breed foreigner Roshan finds himself amid a religious riot - a plot turn more compelling than his unconvincing romance with the lovely Bittu (Sonam Kapoor).

Unvarnished and surprisingly tough on the excesses of both religions, "Delhi-6," nonetheless, remains vague about both America's appeal and the motherland's pull.
