After two years, Salim Akhtar offered her Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat (1997). It was considered as her debut film but when the film was unsuccessful at the box office, Mukerji returned to college to complete her education.
In 1997 she did Ghulam with Aamir Khan which was a blockbuster she got her claim to fame from this film.

She got her big break in Bollywood when Karan Johar approached her for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1988) opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
