Born on November 28th, 1988 to Mukesh Gautam, in Himachal Pradesh, Yami was always a studious kid. Though as a child she aspired to become an actress, she changed her decision and decided to pursue law and enrolled in a law college. However, when a relative sent her photographs to a modeling agency, and Yami subsequently received a positive response, she decided to go ahead and pursue her childhood dream.
She moved to Mumbai when she was 20, dropping off college to debut on television with Chaand Ke Paar Chalo. She soon became a household name as she went on to do other shows such as Rajkumaar Aryaan and Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam. She also did ad commercials for Fair and Lovely, Kwality Walls, KFC Coffee and Samsung. Yami debuted in the world of movies with the Kannada movie, Ullasa Uthsaha in 2010 before arriving at Bollywood with Vicky Donor in 2012. The movie went on to become a huge commercial success and she received critical appreciation for her work in the film. Yami has also graced the covers of popular magazines such as Prevention, Wedding Affairs and Femina. She has the nominations of many accolades to her credit and the victory of four awards including Star Debut of the Year, IIFA 2013.
With her talents, beauty and looks, she surely has no dearth of fans or suitors, but Yami claims she is single. She is a very private person by nature and claims that she would never discuss her love life with the media. Compatibility and maturity are very important for her in a relationship but as of now, she is too busy with work to think about love and a relationship, being happy with her family and her group of friends.

Yami will soon be seen in Aman ki Asha opposite Ali Zafar and Hamara Bajaj with her Vicky Donor co-star, Ayushmann Khurrana. Apart from Bollywood flicks, Yami is also working on three other movies, two Telugu and one Tamil, namely, Courier Boy Kalyan, Yuddham and Tamilselvanum Thaniyar Anjalum .
